academic library access for the independent academic?

I live in the West Midlands, home to a few good university libraries. Unfortunately, none of these libraries offer memberships to community members. My own alma mater, Birmingham City University, does not have an alumni library membership. It's very annoying. I would really like access to SagePub and T&F for journal articles. Can you recommend a university or college in the UK, Europe, or anywhere that offers remote access to their library's databases and where I could buy an annual membership?

newspaper search, power reference librarian edition

The New York Times has historically been printed in multiple editions: a first edition, published around 10:30 PM; an early edition, printed the next morning; and afternoon/final editions, later that day. Are there copies of the earlier versions anywhere? [more inside]

I have no IDeaL what I'm doing (IDL programming for absolute dum-dums)

So, I recently got selected to do undergraduate physics research this summer. Great! Awesome! Yay me! However, my research advisor has asked me to use something called IDL to analyze tomographic images of compounds and turn them into 3D images. This is good news, because IDL is used a lot by astronomers to analyze astronomical data, and I want to continue my education in astronomy. But, I've never used IDL ever before. I'm not even sure exactly what it is (a programming language?). My question is this: how do I get up to speed so that I can hit the ground running with my research? Difficulty: Research begins in two weeks. Details: [more inside]

Seeking journal article to state the obvious

It seems to be common knowledge that elderly people, or others who are subject to more falls, will sustain more fractures than the rest of the population, and will have increased morbidity as a result. What I am looking for is an authoritative journal article (abstract or title is fine), preferably from an orthopaedic publication, stating the above. [more inside]

How to know your qual research pre-test interview was a success?

Hello, qualitative researchers! I'm doing a qualitative research project. i have a series of interview questions i wanted to ask some people. to make sure the questions were good, i asked them to my pre-test subject. the questions seemed clear and their responses seemed interesting. but is there some more scientific way of saying (or deciding) "Yup, seems good."? I need to write in my thesis how i came to the conclusion that the pre-test was successful. I can see how this would be easy(or more precise) in quantitative research, but i don't have any numbers. How do you do this? And how do you word it? Thank you!

Where can I find authoritative medical information about depression?

I'm doing some research about how depression manifests itself as physical symptoms. Do you know any authoritative, academic sources that I should consult to research the link? I'm not very familiar with exploring medical databases, and I don't know what medical journals might carry more weight than others... Thanks, everyone!

Heart Rate Monitoring on the Cheap

Dear Hive Mind, My friend (a graduate student in psychology) wants to collect physiological measures for her dissertation. However, she doesn't have much money with which to do so. What is the cheapest way for her to accurately record the heart rate of some undergraduates? How much more will it cost her to be able to export the data to a computer? Thanks 10^6, zscore

Classicists: How to find key secondary sources on ancient Greek authors?

I'm a librarian helping a patron. She's written an essay that, in part, discusses a piece of ancient Greek literature as the origin of a particular theme. She's received feedback from a reviewer that was very critical regarding the omission of several specific secondary sources. There seemed to be an assumption that the author overlooked or neglected these sources, when in fact she hadn't come across them in her research. The reviewer provided a list, but the author would like a way to avoid this kind of criticism in the future. Is there a way to identify key secondary sources on ancient Greek authors? [more inside]

Help find a cite for a study

Can anyone help find a cite for a study? I think I heard about it on the radio at some point. It also surveyed student/teacher perceptions of the time spent, and had a follow-up component where teachers tried to even out the time. Thanks in advance!

Help with hiring someone to collect data from afar

I need about ten years of weekly advertisements placed in the classifieds section of an upstate, popular alternative newspaper. I've called around, and I cannot get the newspapers through inter library loan at my university. I cannot get the ads directly from the newspaper either, and I've exhausted every possible channel to do so. I think I am going to have to hire someone off of Craigslist, but I've never done this before, and would like some advice so that I ensure I get this to me in the most efficient format, at the lowest possible cost, without errors. I could use some advice on all aspects of the logistics of planning this, from start to finish. The project is important, and I have attention deficit disorder predominantly inattentive, which I think is why I've simultaneously procrastinating and over thinking this. I have a lot of questions, as you'll see. [more inside]
