Income tax versus Fair tax....help

I need to better understand the proposed tax systems. Mainly the fair tax or sales tax versus an income tax. I am writing a paper for school on the viewpoints of TTARA (The Texas Taxpayers and Research Ass.) and CTJ (citizens for tax justice) but cannot gain a clear idea of what each side is proposing. Obviously the republicans want the fair tax, and since TTARA is business minded, I assume they too seek the fair tax, or at least support it. But what is the Dem idea of fair taxation? Do they want an income tax? What is all this talk on CTJ about income tax cuts? I don’t have the patience to sift through all the material so I'm hoping someone can give me a basic idea of the differing positions on the matter. Mainly answer the question of who wants what and why, and who benefits most from each plan.... Also what about the working poor, do they benefit most from an income tax? Etc. Etc.

Do I need to reregister for Alabama's Primaries?

I'm thinking about voting in the Alabama primary. This is something I've never done before. I'm already registered as a voter. I didn't vote in the last election but I did vote in the two (presidential elections) before that. According to UAB's Kaleidescope, I should register by January 25th. Is this the same registration as the last time I registered (for the general elections)? Should I register again? Should I just show up at my voting location? I haven't moved or anything. Am I right in assuming that I only get to vote for one candidate? I would personally like to vote for two, one for the republican of my choice and one for the democrat of my choice.

I'm pretty sure that's not how it works. I can definitely see how it could be abused. Maybe I shouldn't worry with it?

Translate a political flier to Chinese?

Could you help me reach out to the predominantly Chinese elderly voters in my neighborhood? I'm spending the weeks before Super Dooper Tuesday talking to my friends and neighbors about a candidate I believe in strongly, Dr. Ron Paul.

However, I live in a strongly Chinese immigrant neighborhood. Many of the older voters speak only a few words of English, and I don't speak a syllable of Chinese. Though they happily take the brochures I printed up in English, its pretty obvious they struggle understanding what is said. I would really like to reach out to them by providing them a flier in Chinese which would give them an opportunity to evaluate the candidate and decide whether they like him.

Unfortunately, I can't find anyone in the Ron Paul forums or the local MeetUp groups who speaks Chinese. Would you help me me with how to say the following in Chinese- or even Korean?

"Dr. Ron Paul is a candidate for the republican nomination for President of the United States. Dr. Paul supports lower taxes and an immediate end to the war in Iraq. In ten terms in the US Congress, he has never voted to raise taxes. Please consider voting for Dr. Paul during the California primary on February 5, 2008.

If you have any questions about Dr. Paul, if you haven't yet registered to vote, or if you need help finding to or getting to the polling station, we live a few blocks away on _____ road and would be happy to help. Please call us at ________. My name is _____."

If you're not in to Ron Paul, that's fine - but please, no flaming.

Thanks!

How to become a Repbulican?

How do I register as a Republican and vote in the primary? Never thought I'd ask this, but...
I am registered to vote in the state of Texas. I've never declared a party affiliation, and I don't even know how. I want to vote for Ron Paul in the primary. How do I go about registering as a Republican, and subsequently go about voting in the Republican primary?

How does one unregister to vote?

How does one unregister to vote? Speaking perhaps hypothetically, cuz I'm not 100% certain I'm gonna do this; depends on what it entails. I'd just like to know what I gotta do before I decide.

How might a person take their name off whatever list it is that tells the government you're registered to vote? How does one stop being a Democrat legally?

I don't wanna become a Republican, and I don't want to stop being an American citizen. I just don't want to be counted when any political party figures out how many millions of registered voters are allegedly on their side.

How does one unregister to vote?

Where can I find the most thorough indictment of the Bush administration and its activities to date?

In light of a recent mefi post, I'd like to ask a question I've been meaning to ask for a long time.

Where can I find the most thorough indictment of the Bush administration and its activities to date? I'm looking for a complete rundown of the crimes and corruption of the administration (and the GOP). I'm looking for where they've been taking this country and why it's the wrong way. I'm looking for what they're doing right under everybody's noses.

I'm looking for something that goes beyond making fun of Bush's funny face or stuttering or what have you. I want to dig deep and get my hands dirty with this stuff, but I don't want to read dense paragraphs of technical language and minor discrepancies in laws. I want it to be systematic, with as little extrapolation (that is to say, as much hard evidence) as possible. I want it to be relentless and scathing, but not obstinate or unreadable.

And I don't want it to be too long (man, am I idealistic or what?).

What I mean to say is, preferably something I could find online. I'm pretty swamped as far as books go. Obviously you can't do all this in a paragraph--but I don't want a 500 page book on my hands right now . I'm thinking more, "exposé of anywhere from 10 to 30 pages."

So, ask mefi: where can I go? Where can I turn? Maybe it would be a compilation of sources? Help!

Can I choose between the greater of two goods? Please.

If a political canididate demonstrates that he or she is most definitely not cut out for the job but is running with the political party which you find most inoffensive, what if any options exist?
I was recently contacted (via door to door campaigning of all things) by a political candidate. Well actually my roommate talked with him. My roommate being new to the area asked the candidate where the polling place for the neighborhood was located. The candidate did not know. The roommate related this story to me and showed me the campaign literature was so poorly written and so uniformative as to his stand on given issues I was driven to his website.

His website I found was equally ill excecuted, but there was a section for comments. I left one stating I could not possibly vote for him as his literature was not compelling enough. I left my phone number. He called later that day. I informed of the issues that I saw with his campaign materials. And he started making excuses. Pretty poor ones I might add. Bottom line I guess is: Am I asking too much that a local politician be able to go toe to toe with an average schmuck like me. I mean I knocked him off his talking points with ease. Do I have to vote for the other guy on principle? I need to vote for someone who debates more adroitly than myself. Am I wrong?

Is there a Republican ex-Senator named Edwards? He was quoted at the end of yesterday's CSPAN Radio's weekend edition Sunday about Porter Goss affair. His quote was something along the lines of "No No No No, Goss has absolutely nothing to do with this. It's like birds chirping at a nest.
Are there any funny right-wing comedians? I have been looking all over for new funny stuff to keep me entertained on long journeys to work and back but all my comedy seems to come from left-wing/atheist/anti-bush sources (David Cross, Lewis Black, Patton Oswalt etc). I'd like to know if there are actually any funny right-wing/religious/pro-bush comedians so that I don't end up laughing at just one thing all the time. I don't want the usual suspects saying "Bushisms are funny hem-hem-hem", I'd like genuine suggestions if there are any - bonus points if the jokes aren't all about Bill Clinton since he is an easy whipping boy for all comedians. The comedian doesn't even have to be from the USA, as long as it's in English.

Does anyone care about America anymore?

Why do we only hear negative criticism of the US President? During Clinton's terms, there was a neverending string of complaints. Clinton could do nothing right. Similarly, Bush 2.0 gets nothing but complaints.

Why don't the critics ever present one or two good things about a given president? Examples - complain all you want about clinton's affair, but hey that telecommunication act of 1996 sure was nice. Or - complain endlessly about Bush's iraq war, but biodiesel really is an interesting new fuel option.

I'm not interested in hearing praise from a president's support base, I wondering why we don't hear a small number of good things from the opponents.

This matters because it seems to me that we should be more concerned with improving the United States than ensuring that only democrats or onyl republicans win.
