We made a magazine all about pants. Not a fashion magazine or anything, just people writing/drawing/doing poems abut pants. Now it's time to launch it and I seem to need some pants-related songs for a radio show. Seems like a perfect question for the hive-mind. Any ideas?

Are you forced to listen to the same music every day at work or elsewhere, and do you like it, dislike it, or just not notice it? Mainly, I'm curious how you manage to deal with it, or if I'm really that sensitive to repetitive music. Or are you the one playing the same station out loud every day? Have you had any incidents arise from it from co-workers/colleagues? And is Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry" really that addictive... still? [more inside]

Asking on behalf of a friend...
'One day back in 2004 or 2005 I heard a song played on the radio. All I remember is that the song was fairly long, and that at some point it descended into a kind of blissed-out psychedelia, and I remember a stoned-sounding voice saying 'You're my butterfly' with a sense of wonder.'
Any ideas?

What's this song? It was on US Top 40 radio in the late 80s. It's a mashup sorta thingie of musical styles, starting out with a big band playing "In the Mood" and moving forward through different popular music styles to the modern day. IIRC at the very end there is a brief return to a little bit of In the Mood.

Name my radio show, which focuses on electronic music, centered around genres like: idm/braindance or whatever we call it these days, dub, trip-hop, chip music (as in... gameboy's and C64's), aleatoric, grime, dubstep, minimal, electrofunk, deep house and so forth.
I would say the primary theme of the show is music that is interesting not only for doing something creative, but for doing it with newly available technology (for it's time). I also have a bias towards music that is rooted in Jazz or other improvisational traditions. Aside from what is decidely artsy-music, there is also a smattering dancable music and mashups deemed clever enough. There is no dance music of the foor-to-the-floor variety though, and it is not primarily a dance show. [more inside]

I am working on a documentary radio piece and I'm looking for some instrumental music to use in the background. I've stumbled across some great instrumental stuff, but most of it is incredibly sappy. The problem with this is that my story is not. I'm looking for relatively upbeat music, not music to break up to. Can anyone suggest some interesting instrumental artists or collections? Maybe a movie soundtrack?

Remember Cher's "Believe" from a few years ago ("Do you believe in life after love?")
I heard an ironic, great version of it on the radio yesterday. I couldn't find it in the station playlists. It has a male vocalist and uses the same vocodor distortion effect on the chorus as the Cher version. Who is it? (PS, it isn't The Luxury Liners.)

I'm looking for sites related to American popular culture from the early 20th century: books, films, radio, magazines, music, dance, comic strips, celebrities — you name it. I'm particularly interested on the period between the wars, but open to great stuff from before (and during) World War I, as well. Little Nemo, Keystone Kops, the Lindy Hop, Enrico Caruso, Fatty Arbuckle, Al Jolson, Clara Bow, Flash Gordon, Alice blue, Teddy bears, etc. These are all the sorts of things I'm after, especially as they're represented on the web. Bonus points for sites with RSS feeds. [more inside]

I once heard a radio program (probably on NPR or the BBC) about the song "Willow Weep for Me." They claimed it was an extraordinary song for two reasons: it was written by a woman (rare in 1932) and there was striking tempo change in the middle of the song. However, in most recordings, the musicians skip the tempo change. But on the show I listened to, they played a rare recoding that featured the change. I want that recording. [more inside]
