In one of my classes for my Master's degree we did a short, team centered, role playing exercise that was pen and paper based. It involved crash landing in a jungle, and then making a series of choices to escape to civilization. I'm not looking for that specific exercise, but I'd like to find a similar print-n-play scenario that could be used with undergraduates. Free is definitely a plus. Playing in around 45 minutes would be necessary. Each packet would ideally accommodate between 5 to 8 players.

Querying the Metafilter Collaborative Filtering Algorithm: I greatly enjoy 1st-person action-RPGs like Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and - stretching the RPG category a bit - Borderlands. I also enjoy D&D-like party-based CRPGs like Baldur's Gate. I generally prefer traditional RPG stat and leveling mechanics and an open world layout, or at least a map accommodating multiple paths. About 4-5 years ago, I remember sitting in a friends' room watching her play an absolutely mesmerizing video game. I think she was a human/wolf... or a creature of some kind. I remember that the setting was exquisitely beautiful. Fractal textures, and the wooded path she ran along was hazed in mist. And I think there were two world 'settings' - a normal, bright one, and a dark version of the world, where black flecks flickered in the darker mist. I don't remember any of the plot or mechanics though, just how beautiful the world was. Like something from a Hayao Miyazaki movie. It was a personal game, not anything online... and so beautiful!

What are your favorite tabletop and board games that exist to encourage free-form narrative play with a minimum of mechanics? I know about Fate, and I like it, but I'm trying to expand a bit. Could someone recommend a free or inexpensive program I could use to track experience points in a nerd project I'm working on? To inspire myself to write more, I thought I'd turn my automath afternoons into a sort of rpg, where I gain points for expanding my vocabulary, memorizing passages, writing, revising, and publishing. I could do it all on paper, but I've found I'm much more productive when I keep all my work on my laptop (hypotheses abound). I could also use a spread sheet, where current stat totals are in the top row, but that would quickly lead to tedious scrolling just to input new data. Ideally, I'd like to have a static page with fields I can plug numeric data into, and have that data compiled and displayed somewhere at the top of the page. Seems pretty basic--the kind of thing that must exist, right? Thanks!
A book that I'm reading now gave me a flashback to something that I must have read around 1992-93, and now I want to find that book again, re-read it, and see if it ever became a series (ISTR a cliff-hanger-ish ending). Definitely not Joel Rosenberg's _Guardians of Flame_ series, but the same trope - group of modern-day RPG players find themselves trapped in the game they're playing. Sadly, the number of things I remember (of the paperback edition that I read) is pretty sparse. I remember: the blue cover, with a wizard riding in a Montgolfier brothers'-style hot air balloon in front of a computer; that the 'game world' the players found themselves in had very hexagonal terrain and that inhabitants of the game world knew how many hexes of different terrain they could travel in a given time period, and could not cross hex boundaries even if there was plenty of daylight left if they'd traveled that distance. I know it's a longshot, but, help?

I am trying to find this PC game I remember playing as a kid (mid-late 80's). It was maybe EGA era, definitely at least CGA. Me and a friend believe the name of it was something like "Destiny". It was a north/east/south/west/look kind of game with RPG elements. I don't remember a ton about it, except that we really enjoyed it, and never completed it because it was corrupted when we got to the end. One of the striking images I have is a green venus fly-trap like creature, with eyes on stalks. As you fought it and did damage, you would lop eyes off, and ichor would ooze out. (These were still images no animation, but updates throughout battles). I also remember something about a fountain and gems at the bottom of it as well (yeah, real specific I know!). I believe the end involved orcs and a throne or a crown, but it's getting real hazy at this time. If you have any recollection of this game, I'd love to hear about it, to prove that me and my childhood friend are not having group hallucinations, and to maybe track it down and play again.

Have you played the old rogue-like game Omega? I re-discovered it recently and remember enjoying it a long time ago, but nowadays I can't get past the first five minutes. All of my games go like this: give a bit of charity to be lawful, join the paladins to get a weapon, go to the arena to make some money, die in the third or fourth round. Any tips would be appreciated. A mini-walkthrough that would actually get me out of the city as a half-viable character would be great!

I'm planning an RPG for a group of friends, using the Animorphs series as inspiration. I'd like to set the game in the modern US, the modern world. I need to at least sketch out how an alien race able to parasitically take over human bodies (gaining access to their thoughts and memories in the process) would plan out the first stages of an invasion. Their eventual goal is to enslave all humans as hosts. A group of friends are starting a Pathfinder RPG campaign. Pathfinder is a 'fork' of D&D. We spent 3 hours last night with the DM creating characters, flipping lots of pages, and writing on character sheets. By the end of the night, we were wondering if there was software or sites that helped players keep track and calculate the bonuses of characters online or in software. I'm about to join a tabletop RPG group (Shadowrun) for the first time since high school. I'm not *that* concerned about the game mechanics – I'm usually pretty good at learning rules – but I was never particularly good at the roleplaying aspects of RPGs. Any advice for starting out, particularly in terms of setting up an interesting character to roleplay and really getting comfortable playing him/her? The other members of the group are pretty experienced, and have been playing together for nearly a year. In observing them, I noticed that they do a really good job with the roleplaying aspects, and I'd like to be able to keep up with them!
Kind of curious about this. I know Shadowrun does/did well in Germany, and has/had at least a nominal presence in Japan. One of the (for good or ill) characteristics of the setting is the jargon and street slang. How are these translated into other languages? What are some examples?
