I've got a four-year old PC running vista. It's got 4gb Ram and a 1tb storage. It's never been a high performer, but lately its been running really slow, especially on start up and getting really clunky when I have, say, four of five applications running. I've been considering buying more RAM to speed things up a little. Is more memory the answer to my problems?

I need a new Desktop PC and I want it to run
well. First, what are good combinations of processor and memory? Intel's Ivy Bridge I7 processors look the best, and I'm guessing 10 gb of ram would suffice, or would it? I'm not buying an Apple, but HP? Compaq? Dell? What combination of processor/ram/brand would you recommend for a desktop somewhere around a thousand dollars? Thanks!

Why might a process not use all available physical memory under Windows Server 2008 r2 standard? I have 32Gb of RAM acknowledged by Resource Monitor, of which 19.4 are allocated to a process (the IBM solver CPLEX running in command line form from Power Shell) that has just thrown a controlled OOM error despite there being another 12 Gb marked as available.
I'm going to assume (to start with) that the program itself isn't the culprit, but is there a per-user limit switch, a per-process limit switch or something similar in 2008 r2? Any other ideas?

A few weeks ago, I put into my new Macbook Pro (2.3 i5) 8GB 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM in it from Crucial. The result was Kernel Panics and unstable applications. I reinstalled the (4GB) Apple RAM, and the problem went away. Crucial sent me replacement memory, I installed it, and guess what?

I recently bought a new Macbook Pro (2.3 i5) and almost immediately put 8GB 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM in it. Almost immediately, I got a kernel panic, and then Chrome would crash every once in a while. I have also had occasional crashes of Pages, MailPlane, and BusyCal, but no more panics. It has been about a week or so since I installed the RAM. Do you think I have a bad memory stick, or is this occasional crashiness related to something else?

Should I buy a new computer now, or will I just kick myself in six months because it will be cheaper? I am contemplating buying the iMac, but the cost of getting 16GB of RAM upgrade adds about a grand to the total price. I really want to have a lot of speed. Is it likely for the price to go down much in the next 6 months? If so, will it be substantial (worth putting off the instant gratification), or will it be insignificant as a % of the total price? Buying a new laptop, I have worked down to 2 choices. One has Win7 (32-bit) and 4gb DDR2 ram, the other has Win7 (64-bit) with 3gb DDR3 ram. Same price. I don't really know enough about the difference between 32/64bit or DDR2/3 to make a decision. Can you explain the difference and offer advice as to which is best.

I have a HP Pavilion dv6700 (dv6780se) laptop which i recently upgraded to Windows 7 pro via a free copy from the msdn alliance. I am currently running 3 gigs of physical RAM in 2 slots. I recently read an article suggesting a change to the virtual memory paging file size. From what i gathered you should or can increase the size by multiplying the current amount times 1.5.
This would change my total virtual memory to 4605, is this wise?
Should i leave it on the save hard drive has my OS or move it to a partition or separate external hard drive?
I've also read that readyboost can increase performance... is this still quite debatable for Windows 7 and am I already pushing the limits of my RAM and virtual memory?

I inherited a barely-used 2004 Dell laptop, Pentium M 1600 MHz, 30 GB hard drive, Windows XP, Mobility Radeon 9000, 512 MB RAM.
Is it worth reformatting and upgrading the RAM to its 2 GB max (at $100), for a few more years of basic internet and Open Office, or as a whole will it forever lag in current-and-near-future contexts?
It could be a decent tool for my commuter days as an undergrad, though it is currently far too slow going to be productive or entertaining.
