I have only 80 hours left of work, but should I bail early?

I have severe social anxiety and depression, but I've been trying to work part-time with the support of my state's vocational rehab program. I have a natural exit point from this job coming up on August 27th, and I intend to take it. I don't know, though, if I can make it that long. [more inside]

When should I resign?

I'm quitting my job next month and I was planning on giving the standard two weeks notice. However, my husband has to have surgery (non-life threatening, but he'll be out of work for 1-2 weeks). If I actually gave two weeks, the first week of my notice would be the week that I'm taking time off for his surgery. So, should I wait until after I come back from his surgery and give just one week notice? [more inside]

Help with a huge career decision

I'm between a rock and a hard place in my career, and I could really use some advice and outside perspective. In short: my current job is incredibly stressful, with an environment bordering on abusive. I have an offer for a new job which I think would be much more pleasant. But I'd really be putting some people I truly like in a bad position if I leave my job now. Details below. [more inside]

"Sobriety" Coins/Chips/Medallions For an Ex-Smoker?

After several decades of sucking up carcinogenic fumes, Mr. Thumbscrews quit smoking... yay! I'd like to present him with the smokers' equivalent of AA sobriety "chips" on his various "___ months without a cig" dates. My Google-fu is failing to produce anything. Any ideas, Hive? The ideal medallion would be cheap-ish, possibly funny, and definitely non-hokey (no soaring eagles or serenity prayers). Thanks!

Should I quit my temp job or am I just being fussy?

Last week, after 5 months of unemployment and desperation I managed to get a minimum wage temp job through an agency. On my first day I was incredibly excited to have finally found a job, but quickly realised that I hate it. It's a data entry position, inputting handwritten inventory data into a database. Basically the job is incredibly tedious, there is no variety, I'm doing exactly the same repetitive task for 7.5 hours a day. I'm basically working by myself in an office with other people and can't really talk to anyone because it distracts me. I can't really leave to take a break because the office door is locked and someone has to let me in every time. They are nice to me though and tell me to take regular breaks but there is nowhere to go. [more inside]

e-cigarettes for dummies

I'm thinking of going down the e-cigarette route, but I've got a few questions I'm not sure about, in brief: 1) Is there any research out there on their effects on your health? I get that it's early days, and they've got to better than smoking, but are there side effects/dangers that I should be aware of? 2) Is there much difference between a cheap one I can buy at the supermarket, compared to an expensive one I buy on the internet? 3) What have your experiences been like with them? Is it difficult to make the jump from normal cigarettes? [more inside]

I quit smoking, but he didn't

I quit smoking about a month ago. My boyfriend wants to quit smoking, but hasn't. He's cut down quite a bit (he hasn't been smoking in the evenings), but he still smokes during the day. I know it's not easy, I thought about quitting for a long time before it actually happened, but I just feel so upset now whenever I see him light up, or if I smell smoke on him. Me--planning to quit job. Work--planning grant funded projects for me.

[For folks that work in the non-profit sector] I feel at a loss for what to do. I work for a non-profit that I have been planning to leave for some time. I am taking the GRE this month, applying to schools and even applying for school-compatible part time jobs. At the same time, my non-profit is trying to pull itself out of a budget hole by applying for a multitude of grants. Most of the deliverables are things that I am supposed to deliver and the only other person left to deliver would be my immediate supervisor. I like my supervisor and don't know how she would even get all the work done if I left. My work would not be easily transferred to a new hire. I feel overcome with guilt as each new grant proposal goes out the door because I'm not planning on being around to do this work. I know it would be really dumb to say that before I have an offer in hand for school or a new job. What is the right thing to do? Should I let them build their plans around me when I'm not sure I'll be around? [more inside]

Want to quit but don't want to look like a jerk on my resume.

I was going to write a long explanation of why I want to quit, but really, none of it matters. I'm a PM in Advertising - I have worked at small agencies and probably never want a long term, real FT gig at a big shop. I would be okay contracting at a place like that. If I decide to quit this job, I will likely do so in favor of a contract, and will likely avoid a real FT gig for some time due to agency burn out (unless I get an offer from a known quantity, which is a possibility but not a certainty). All in all, I'd much rather be without anything to do and the option to do what I'd like instead, rather than where I am now, which is nothing to do and ready to lose my mind. [more inside]

I don't want to tip my hand.

I am planning on leaving my job, and indeed my current career path, in the next 3-ish months, but for various practical reasons I want to stay for those next 3-ish months. There's a conference coming up that I would absolutely be going to if I were staying in this career. Do I sign up for the conference? If I do, the conference fee will be wasted when one of my coworkers could use the money for their own professional development (and money is tight in our department) and I'm afraid this would cause bad feelings and people would take it personally. Is it ok to quit a job when you know you are not going to be successful? I'm currently involved in a huge system transformation at work which is vastly underresourced and going sideways in a huge way. Is it ever ok to walk away from a situation like this? Should I stick it out and try to bring some success and closure to this project no matter how many overtime hours it takes? Or throw in the towel?
