How safe is Carolina/San Juan, Puerto Rico?

I am going to an April wedding at the Marriott Courtyard in Carolina, Puerto Rico. I can stay at the hotel if that's the best option, but I did see some neat-looking Airbnbs that are in the walkable area of the hotel. How safe is this area of Puerto Rico? [more inside]

Getting to Vieques: Is it a hassle? Would we be missing out?

I've read all of the MeFi threads about Puerto Rico and I'm trying to figure out if an excursion to Vieques makes sense for this trip. So many people have told us to visit Vieques (and MeFi seems to confirm this), but it seems a bit expensive to get there ($400 for two people is expensive for us for a flight). I'd also like to get some opinions on whether Vieques is worthwhile for a 2 or 3 night stay, as opposed to spending more time elsewhere in Puerto Rico and saving Vieques for another trip? How are Puerto Rico's highways for night driving?

My wife and I are heading to Puerto Rico for a few days, and plan to explore the island and see a couple baseball games. One is in Mayaguez, but it's only just occurred to me that means driving back to San Juan at probably a little before 10pm. We live in the middle of nowhere, so I'm used to hours-long drives home late after we do something in the city, but my only experience driving in PR is from San Juan to the rainforest, during the day. Are highway conditions OK for driving at night if I only have tourist Spanish and don't really know where I'm going? I'll have an iPhone, but should I spring for the GPS with the rental car?

Where to go for a February babymoon, someplace warm?

The husband and I would like to go on a trip in before we have our first child. Our ideal would be a relaxing and beachy vacation spot in the tropics (Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico?)—big bonus if it's a place we might want to return to in later years with our kid or kids! Specific resort/condo/hotel recommendations appreciated. [more inside]

Waving your index finger in Puerto Rico

At the end of this Puerto Rican drag queen's lip sync/dance performance, you can see many people in the audience waving their index finger in the air as they cheer. It's obvious that they're very approving of the performance, but is there something more specific that this gesture means? I've seen it used once or twice before, but never by so many people—is it specific to Puerto Rican culture or is it common elsewhere as well? And is it something specific to gay culture or is it widely used?

When to buy tickets for a Christmas trip to Puerto Rico?

Planning to spend a week around Christmas in Puerto Rico with my wife and two kids. Have been watching airfare from DC - has been pretty consistent at about $350 RT. Exact days are flexible, so flying in and out on Wednesday to take advantage of cheaper mid-week fares is fine. Do I pull the trigger and buy now, or do I have a reasonable chance to save significant dollars by waiting?

I know it used to be a convent, but...

My soon-to-be-wife and I will be in San Juan, PR, this weekend, staying at El Convento. The photos on the web site seem to indicate it's not very laid-back in terms of dress, but hotel reviews I've read haven't mentioned anything about how dressy or casual the place is. Can anyone provide some firsthand knowledge? Bonus restaurant recommendations are welcome, too.

Oh the places we could go...

My friend and I are trying to decide on a vacation destination (August '13), and we're looking at Puerto Rico or Costa Rica. Neither of us is a resort-loving tourist, so we're definitely looking for some destinations which are less sitting on the beach and more checking out some neat stuff. Can you help us decide?
