Hi everyone! For my job, I'm transitioning from Mac to Linux (trying Ubuntu) on my laptop and using an Android phone (CyanogenMod). I'm a little new to all this. For work and for play I read and write just an insane amount of text. I write papers and nonfiction research pieces and novels and thousands of notes. I read epubs and mobis and piles o' PDFs and many many online articles. What are your favorite apps and programs for reading, writing, editing, saving, and searching/storing text on these platforms? [more inside]
I'm getting tired of the constant hacks, and I pretty much use the same passwords across multiple sites. Thing is, I can't keep up with eight dozen passwords. Seems like the answer is one of the password manager programs/apps out there. So which one is the one to use? How do I use it with multiple locations and computers (work/home/mobile)? I'm willing to pay upfront, but not a subscription. No one needs another monthly expense. Bonus points if you can explain it like I'm five.
I've been accepted to two summer programs in two great cities! I am indecisive and have only a few more days to decide which travel grant to accept. [more inside]

I have a couple web forms I'd like to make: one for a professional purpose, another for personal use (though that could exist as a program or an app that I don't know about). Is it better to find a service that will allow you to build conditional forms, or can they be made from scratch with some ease? [more inside]
I just got a Macbook Pro and would like to be able to draw simple diagrams with shapes and text fields. Are there any Mac programs or apps equivalent to PC's Paint? My search online has brought up Paintbrush which appears to be a very old program. The new ones in the apps store are either really expensive or poorly reviewed if they're free. Thanks!
I am graduating college this year and wondering what student discounts on software ought I take advantage of? I am aware of Tableau, Max/MSP and Microsoft Office Suites offering academic discounts but would like to be aware of anything that becomes prohibitively expensive after my scholarly status ends. Are there any professional organizations I can join such as the ACM that offer book or software discounts as well?

I help this sweet old lady with computer stuff. She's running Windows 7 and uses an SBC account "powered by Yahoo!" (terribly out-of-date interface). She often receives emails with family photos from her daughter-in-law's iPhone. She CAN download them, and I'm teaching her how to wade through the attachment-folders that seems to create (for virus-scanning I presume) and then copy them over to her Pictures folder, where she can organize them. However, they are often rotated incorrectly because of some iPhone - Windows issue, and they are often checked "Read-Only"... [more inside]

I don't want this computer to run like molasses after a few years of web browsing and use. What is the best way to do that? [more inside]

I want to create a "crime map" of a city over time. I know the dates of the crimes, and I know the physical address. I'd like for the crime map to be something that I could show a crowd in a presentation such that the audience members could witness for themselves how a particular part of the city changed as time went on. I was thinking of Gapminder as the ideal, but spatially and dynamic instead of simply numbers. I suppose it'd be possible to get something up and going with GIS, but I was wanting to do it in a way that was idiot-proof as this is only valuable to me if I can do it easily without a ton of time learning some new program.

My PC is running slow. So I went to ProcessLibrary.com to check the programs running in task manager. I've also got Malwarebytes and AVG Anti-Virus running. But these programs aren't impenetrable. I just bought my first Mac (Leopard). It seems like Command + tab to switch applications is way less useful than Ctrl + tab was on my Windows--I don't really want to tab between things I've shut but not closed (or however you say it), and repeatedly four-finger swiping to view all open apps makes me have to look for which one I want every time, which is slow. Am I missing something?
Asking for my friend. My friend is finishing her associate's degree in a creative field in May, but is not sure of whether she should look for a job right away, or accept her admittance to a prestigious and high-profile exchange program at a foreign university. Oh, and she knows about the flipping-a-coin trick so that won't work. [more inside]
What would be useful about weightwatchers online: the fact of having committed to tracking your weight and being more conscious about what you're eating each day -- being forced to acknowledge the program you've set for yourself, instead of just letting it slip away like most good intentions. But. The recipes and points etc. are not for me. I want to eat my own things, not their version of "banana bread" or low fat chicken recipes or whatever. I know *how* to lose weight in terms of food choices. I just want a support or tracking system. Does this exist?
Why don't the programs on my start menu in Windows 7 stay where I put them? I keep my programs organized in categories: office software, stats, hardware, media, etc. yet whenever I reboot some programs have jumped back out on the top level of the programs list. How do I stop this? [more inside]
