How to deal with co-worker that you dated and now have to work closely with, but your angst doesn’t stem from having dated, but just from the fact that you know too much about them now and really don’t like them as a person? [more inside]
A friend has been approached by AlphaSights, who seem to be some sort of a "connect SMEs to companies seeking new markets and earn cash!" organization. There's not much out there about them that's not news linked to the company itself. Has anyone had any interaction (that they can talk about) with AlphaSights that would be useful for my friend?
I am a messy, clutter-loving packrat and my partner is a minimalist. And we live in a one-bedroom apartment. Can a professional organizer help me/us? If so, how can I find a good one? (Does anyone have Seattle-area recommendations?) If you've done something like this, how has it worked out for you? [more inside]
I work for a general contracting company and I'd like to learn more about scheduling construction projects. Can you recommend any resources? Books, online resources, webinars, classes, anything. [more inside]
I'm bored at work, to the point where I frequently cry at my desk. I want to talk to my manager about it, but I need a script. This is my first office job, and I don't have a lot of experience with this part of the whole working professional deal. Can you help me?
I have hard time meeting people. While driving for lyft, I am very professional and have good reviews and at times I strike up a nice conversation with the riders especially women and feel like getting to know more about the girl(about 5% of time). But I chicken out in the end and just stay professional, wondering if it would be appropriate to ask a girl her number, or if she has a bf etc. Is it okay to ask people out? If so, how you do it without sounding weird? what is a good exit strategy if it doesn't work out?
Hi guys, I just finished a summer from hell finishing my accounting designation. To round off my degree, I need to finish a rather open ended paper, and I'm almost out of brain cells and motivation. The paper need be only 2000 words, so nothing too in-depth is required. [more inside]

I am a paid intern for a small SaaS startup, and in the past month or so, I've been drowning a little at life. I remoted into the office this weekend to play catch-up, and discovered that a coworker, who until recently was also an intern, had publicly 'completed' (badly) the task clearly assigned to me, which I had already spent some time on. Our workflow tool indicates he assigned himself to the ticket. [more inside]
I've gotten out of a ten-year plus job that was essentially (if not in reality) a protected workplace and not too difficult and now am going to tackle (have been hired for) a new, higher-up and better paying one (before the first job I was very sick for quite a while and therefore couldn't work at all so missed out on the opportunity to learn about much about the Big Girl/Big Boy details of life in the workplace). Because of this, I feel like I really don't know what I should be doing (besides the work I mean). What is your very best advice for being/appearing professional on the job? I know about not gossiping and being on time.
What style and color of professional high-grade dress shoes should I invest in? [more inside]
I have an Gmail account with an unprofessional-sounding handle—think Schnookums2318@gmail.com. I've been using this for far too long. Firstname.lastname@gmail isn't available, but email@example.com is, and so I took that one. How can I merge the two accounts, or otherwise transition from Schnookums to FirstMiddleLast with a minimum of trouble? [more inside]
Let's assume I can get training in anything I want and have a supportive boss who will allow me to "practice" any skill I choose in my current position as a director. What skills should I learn to make the next big leap to head boss at a non-profit? [more inside]
I'm going to need a "business casual" wardrobe for the first time in my life, but I have no idea how to go about that because I am a short overweight woman whose weight is very changing and I have a desire to look stylish and interesting, not boring and frumpy. Is just filling my closet with dresses a thing I can do? How many dresses would I need? [more inside]
So, I have the most soporific cover letter in the world. Sure, it's professional, but it's genuinely a bore to read. Are there any MeFites who can share some tips on how to craft a rockstar cover letter? [more inside]
I am considering hiring a resume writer. I have 10+ years of experience in a specific industry (industrial manufacturing related) and interested in branching out to different industries. I feel like I should be doing something different than the usual. Has anyone hired a resume writer ever? How was your experience with it? Any tips? My fear would be to get a canned resume that I could do better myself. Are there any personalized services out there that could really help differentiate the resume?

I'm in grad school for a masters in counseling, and our teachers are telling us we need to join listservs and professional organizations, so we know what's happening in our field right now. My issue is this: I have limited time every day, and I'm ADHD. Given these factors, how involved should I get in professional organizations? Are they helpful? Or are they the yearbook committee of the post-graduate world? [more inside]

My wife is starting a professional organizing business and is having trouble coming up with a name for her business that a) doesn't sound generic (i.e. "Organizing Solutions"), b) would appeal equally well to businesses and homeowners and c) would avoid her services being confused with a cleaning service. I'm wondering if anyone here might be able to offer any suggestions?
I am a professional. I am a lady. Every day, in meetings, the same thing happens: the contribution I'm so excited to make to a meeting gets INTERRUPTED by a man or a woman. I am not verbose. I am succinct. I do not speak more than anyone else in the group. Yet I cannot freaking finish a thought without someone interrupting me. It is making me insane. [more inside]

I am in my mid-thirties, but people often think I'm about 22. I could probably pass for 17 in the right outfit. Young face. On top of that, I am slightly built and female. Not short, but delicate. People call me honey and baby and ask me where I go to college. I want to look like a badass who can win venture capital funding. I want to look as powerful and effective as I really am. I've been invited to attend an anniversary dinner/fundraiser for a regional nonprofit advocacy group. I'll be attending as a guest of a work-related higher-up, and the event will doubtless involve a bunch of professional networking small talk. They're calling it a gala... but the event starts at 5:30, with dinner at 6:30. What on earth do I wear? [more inside]

Has anyone gone through any general professional development courses that were awesome and really helped you in your career? I have been tasked with finding some courses for our team of project managers that will help us become more polished professionals. Topics might include client communication, presentations, meeting facilitation, negotiation, conflict resolution, etc. Ideally this course could be done online but if we had to bring someone in that wouldn't be a problem. Help us get better.
In my old job (a small creative outfit), I used to wear what is known as "sport-chic attire", which pretty much means a nice shirt and high-end jeans. It was all about having a shirt for every day of the week with 2 or 3 pants and 2 or 3 pairs of shoes. Now that I'm changing jobs, should I change my dress code as well? [more inside]
Okay, so you print out your resume, business card, and your portfolio. You try to look impeccable for the interview. You try to get into the right mood and you even practice some tongue twisters to avoid stuttering. But what about the interview itself? How do you approach age-old questions without sounding rehearsed? [more inside]
I (petite, mid-20's woman) want to get rid of all my long-sleeved button-front shirts and replace them with things that are still work-appropriate but more flattering and maybe okay for non-work wear as well. I need to clean an expensive white Oscar de la Renta skirt suit that's lined in taffeta/tulle; it has some faint smudging here and there on the thick reverse silk-satin fabric. I wouldn't trust a normal dry cleaner with this, and don't know where else to go. Alex's seems exorbitant and gets awful reviews; Peninou seems doubtful as well; and I read somewhere about Crystal in San Mateo but don't have much to go on. Does anyone know a cleaner (preferably in San Francisco, but I can drive elsewhere if necessary) who works with designer items, maybe wedding gowns, who would know how to work with tricky white silk fabric? Many thanks!
