Getting to know my placenta previa

I'm 24 weeks pregnant with my first child. Baby is fine, but today I was diagnosed with a complete placenta previa. I have not experienced any bleeding. I'm on pelvic rest, but my CNM didn't advise any other activity restrictions. I'm finding quite a bit of conflicting information out there, and it seems like other medical practitioners recommend partial or complete bed rest. How serious is this and what should I be doing?

What is a safe proximity from a Smart Meter for a pregnant woman?

My home's Smart Meter is located directly across from my kitchen sink, on the exterior side of the wall they share. I probably spend about 40 minutes each day standing within 2 feet of the meter, doing dishes and washing produce, etc. My stove is only about 4 feet from the meter, and I love to cook so I spend a considerable amount of time there as well. I am hoping to become pregnant soon. Is this exposure to radiation something I should be at all concerned about? [more inside]

"How could I bring a child into this world?" The climate change edition.

Many people I know who aren't global warming skeptics are still planning to procreate. Though I might like to have a kid someday, the thought of their future quality of life strikes me as a potentially decisive ethical objection to it. While I've seen plenty of arguments against procreation that deal with the ethics of creating more consumers, that issue is distinct from the ethics of creating new sufferers. Can you point me to any well-reasoned arguments--whether yours or something you've seen, on either side of the issue--that deal with the ethics of choosing to bring children into a hotter world? How to avoid pregnancy questions on my wife's upcoming business trip?

My wife is very early into her first pregnancy (4/5 weeks). We are very excited and nervous and overjoyed and terrified. We also know it's extremely early, and as such at the moment we aren't telling anyone anything (not even family or close friends), other than her doctor. The issue is that my wife is going on a business trip soon for 4 days, during which time her small group of coworkers (including her boss) will be going out every night for dinner and drinks. My wife is typically a social drinker (glass of wine or a cocktail), and with no typical excuses available like, say, being the designated driver, it will be noticeable with her small group when she's the only one to decline a drink every night. Advice for broken-hearted 36 y.o. who cannot stay pregnant

My best friend just lost her third pregnancy. She and her husband have been trying to have a baby for 3 years. Her first and second losses were both in the first trimester, causes unknown. This most recent loss was especially horrible - they terminated after profound birth defects (as in: the baby could not survive outside the uterus) were detected on the 20-wk ultrasound. She's 36, and wonders if she'll ever be able to carry a healthy pregnancy to term. Should she give up trying to get pregnant and give birth? Anyone been down this road before and have good advice for her?

Do doctors actually tell their patients they "cannot have children"?

In my life I've heard a number of stories from women who claim to have been told they could not have children... who then proceed to have children without intervention. Sometimes, this is an extremely welcome development, other times, very much the opposite. Saying something like "you will not be able to have children" with such certainty seems like an extremely irresponsible thing for a medical professional to say to a patient and so I have a bit of a hard time believing that doctors say it, at least in any case where it is at least physically possible for someone to conceive. My partner has a child, he's feuding with the mother, I can't handle it

I'm stuck in the town where I just finished university, because I'm engaged to Jake, who has a child here, Finn. Jake had Finn with Kaitlyn when she was 16 and he was 18. Finn is now 4. I could move anywhere I want and make a living. I'm happy with Jake, but I'm unhappy with life as a whole, depressed, have low self-esteem. Jake has only limited contact rights to his son and a whole lot of trouble with Kaitlyn, who hates me. We live together and I am the sole-earner in this household, in the awful UK economy. I haven't left the house all year, I've just been working yet I'm still in debt and I want to get away. On the other hand I love Jake, we have so much in common and we never even argue, even though the year that we've been together life has been very difficult. We really love and respect each other. I have great hope in him, I'm excited to meet his son and I think we could make a life together. Except it would all take years. And I'm at the end of my tether and want to leave now. [more inside]

No really, I don't want to do that... ever...

I am a 31 year old woman and newly married. I have a kick ass husband who also came with a kick ass stepson that I love to death and with whom I have a great relationship. I have no desire to have a bio-kid, especially now that I have a step son. I have had many comments from people about how I am going to change my mind about not wanting more kids, a lot of “Uh huh…” comments with ‘knowing’ smug smiles, sort of like when a 6 year old boy says that he will never ever kiss a girl, eww that is gross. How will a 20-week ultrasound change what we do?

Is there anything that will show up on a fetal anatomical survey that will materially influence what we do for the rest of the pregnancy and/or delivery? We don't care about things like missing fingers or feet, or cleft lips and we don't want to know the child's sex before birth. There's a blood test for spina bifida and the early risk assessment showed a very low risk of chromosomal abnormalities. Can we just skip this ultrasound?

IVF pregnancy - is induction at 40 weeks necessary ?

My wife is 20 weeks pregnant - we conceived via IVF. We went for an ultrasound scan the other day and afterwards spoke to a consultant. She told us that because of the IVF, she recommended that labour should be induced if the baby hadn't come by 40 weeks. We'd much rather have a home birth, which wouldn't be possible with an induction. When we asked about the risks of waiting longer than 40 weeks, the doctor didn't give us much information - it felt like she was just fobbing us off. Can anyone give us pointers to studies or other info that will give us a better understanding of the risks of waiting for spontaneous labour? [more inside]
