So, we're having a baby

It's too early to share with parents, friends, and colleagues, but just the right time to open up to a bunch of internet strangers. Mrs. BJW and I are 9 weeks pregnant. (YAY!!) I would like to ask the hive for help finding 2 things: First, a website that I saw referenced here but can no longer find. Second, the current best "What to Expect" book out there. [more inside]

Prenatal Screening

Just found out that we are expecting our first child. We are about 8 weeks along! We are lucky enough to split out time between Kentucky and Florida. Currently, I am seeing two different doctors, one in each state, as we travel back and forth a bit. Coming up on 10 weeks, both doctors have recommended prenatal screening. One office recommends a "Sequential Screen" test (also called Integrated Screen as well as a Quad screen). The other office offers a similar NIPT screen called "Panorama Prenatal Screen". I understand that different companies offer different services, but I'm trying to figure out if one of these is recommended over the other. Any insight would be appreciated!

Do pregnant Japanese women eat sushi?

I'm interested in thoughts and superstitions centred around eating and food in pregnancy around the world. What are you advised to eat or avoid in your country when pregnant? What are you told will happen to your baby (or its character) if you eat specific foods. Also, do Japanese women really give up sushi when pregnant and do the French give up their camembert and brie?

Increased cerebral blood flow in 3rd trimester?

Hand! My wife and I went for an ultrasound today at week 27 and the Doppler measured increased blood in the brain, it was normal last week. (We have a high risk pregnancy and have frequent ultrasounds) they will have another look next week. My wife had fasted since the night before for the gestational diabetes test which we had right before, so she skipped her usual morning coffee and had a headache herself, could that be the cause? What are the implications of increased blood flow to the baby's brain?

Ways to cope with traumatic preterm labor now I'm home from hospital?

2 weeks ago I noticed the tiniest bit of mucus discharge and walked myself over to the University Maternity Hospital just to be on the safe side and I was in preterm labor and my cervix was almost open, luckily they found the right moment to do surgery and after another week of observation I am home on limited mobility but I feel seriously rattled and would like advice on how to move forward. Bleach Everywhere; Worried About Fetus, Cat, Plants

Help! Own a condo; HOA told us the wood porches would be painted this week after a spray wash. Workers just began to spray bleach everywhere on the wood to kill black mildew (wood was untreated after porches built 4 years ago). Concerns: 8 months pregnant asthmatic (me), our partly-tamed feral cat who spends much time on the porch, and a host of plants. I just watched as bleach misted down from the above porch coating everything on my porch. Help! [more inside]

Looking for poems about birth.

After many years of ambivalence, two years of infertility, some surgeries, some IVF, and 9 months of actual pregnancy, I am about to have a BABY. Due to placenta previa, it will be a scheduled c-section, which is great because most likely me and baby will end up alive! But sad because I'd hoped for a natural childbirth to balance out the scientific conception. My hospital does "gentle" c-sections, so I'm allowed to do immediate skin-to-skin, play music in the operating room, and even "read a poem or a story." [more inside]

Am I enabling poor pregnancy etiquette?

After a long journey to this point, I am 24+ weeks into what seems to be a pretty vigorous pregnancy, and quite thrilled about it. I am also showing like whoa, and so it is becoming commonplace for people I don't know well to spontaneously comment on my being pregnant before I say anything about it. I know this is a terrible thing for people to do, etiquette-wise... but I am too excited to want to quash it. Should I be trying to, and if so, how? [more inside]

Best flea control for cats while pregnant

We have two cats that sleep on our bed. I would love to know the safest flea control method to use during (human) pregnancy (not pregnant now but planning ahead). We've been using Advantage II, but it looks like prenatal exposure to one of the main ingredients - imidacloprid - by parents using the flea treatment in fact - was associated with autism spectrum disorders. What safer options are there? Thanks!

Tricks to settle down in the evenings and improve sleep while pregnant?

Hello! I am just starting my second trimester and the evenings and nights are a tricky time for me. I am not mentally worried about anything and feel very positive about being pregnant, but physically I feel pretty funny at night. My legs get restless, I feel tense and tight... I run too cold and then too warm. My clothes don't feel right- tags and seams bother me, I end up changing a few times in the evenings and I get itchy. Does Plan B work after ovulation?

If I ovulated yesterday, and had unprotected sex today (with withdrawal), will Plan B or a similar pill work? What I'm reading on their site and elsewhere indicates that it works by preventing ovulation, and there's no evidence that it prevents implantation. I'm sure I was ovulating yesterday, but not sure if I still am today (very possible). If there's a chance the pill will help I'll take it, but otherwise want to avoid it, because I know it will make me sick.

My wife is pregnant and feels like crap.

My wife is six weeks pregnant and feels terrible. She is experiencing nausea, lack of appetite, reduced energy and general queasiness almost all the time. She has about an hour each day when she feels normal. Smells are particularly upsetting for her. We understand that these are common experiences for women in their first trimester, but that’s not making it any easier for her to tolerate. We’ve read that many of these symptoms go away in the second trimester, but that’s about 6 weeks away and my wife is wondering how she’s going to survive (and go to work) until then. She’s miserable.
