Macbook and Mac mini server. Both have itunes libraries pointed at an external drive on the mini-server. No problem. My iPhone is backed up to the Macbook. I add music to libraries from both computers. How can I point all my itunes installs to not only one folder, but to all share and update one itunes library.itl file?

All 3 of my primary Apple machines have sudden, inexplicable slowness. My Quad G5, my PowerBook G4, and now even my iPhone suddenly have serious performance problems for no reason I can determine. I know there are some Mac guys on MeFi, I thought I'd ask for additional angles to investigate.

Is it simply possible that, because I have a 4-year-old Powerbook - OS 10.4.11, one month old new hard drive, memory and RAM maxed out, only used 1/4 of memory, system checked regularly with Onyx (with no problem) - I keep getting "program not responding to, especially, my Opera and Firefox browsers, as well as programs like Word, iPhoto, and iTunes?
Plus, more than half the time my Powerbook won't close down when I ask it to and have to do a hard turn off, which can't be good for it.
I've asked a couple of Mac forums, a Mac Genius, and my so-far trustworthy Mac guy whether having a PowerPC processor, instead of the newer Intel one, should make any difference. I got a resounding no.
Still, does anyone have a contrarian and, perhaps,
right, explanation?
Thanks.

I want to have a fast capable NAS/file server/upnp device very similar to the QNAP TS-110 TurboNAS. I have an old 12" Powerbook G4 aluminum MAC OS x laptop. Would it be possible to install a barebones linux installation on the Powerbook to have access to many of the same features of the QNAP device?

I've got an older PowerBook G4 with a 1.5 GHz CPU and 1.25 GB of RAM. It works, but it's sluggish. I don't expect it to be as fast as my shiny new 24" iMac, but it's slower than I'd like. Would selling it on eBay and buying an Asus Eee (I assume the 1000 model) and installing OS X on it give me a fast machine or about the same?

I'm looking for suggestions for both scenarios: The computer works, or it doesn't work. I'm waiting for a battery from eBay...
Wikipedia says it runs OS 7. What can you do with that?
A friend suggested I gut it and fit it with a Nintendo or Sega or something. Anything to spark an idea, and possibly where to look for how-to's concerning your suggestion, please!!

I've currently got a HP Mini-Note 2133 running Ubuntu. I was going to take a stab at installing OS X on it this coming weekend when I realized I could get a 12" iBook or PowerBook G4 for roughly the same price and it would still be small enough I wouldn't mind carrying it around with me all the time and it would run OS X with no hassle. I'd keep my MacPro as my primary workstation that I use for image editing and such, this would just be for email and for surfing the web on the go. If I get a G4 era laptop and install Leopard on it (want to use Back to My Mac after I roll my own dot mac) will I have any issues? I've only recently become a Mac user after years on Linux, so I never used a PPC-based system. Will application like Camino, Mail, Adium, etc all run with no problems? This is what the universal binary thing is all about, right?
Anything else I should be aware of? Any tips or tricks for slimming down 10.5 to make it run better on the older hardware?
Thanks!

I run a 12 inch Powerbook G4 1.33 with 1.25GB of RAM (Tiger) with 64MB dedicated video card. Anytime I play anything video (ABC, NBC, YouTube, CBS, Fox, AOL Video, etc. etc.), the fans come on full blast (more so than I ever remember, and I've had the computer for almost 42 months now). So I have a couple of questions related to this. First, did something happen online that causes intense pressure on the CPU and causes the fans to blast out? Doesn't my seemingly good video card counteract that, or shouldn't it?
And the money question: I've heard rumors that Leopard is much better at handling video compared to Tiger. Would upgrading cause less strain on my CPU, allowing the fans to be a little quieter? Would the video be smoother and allow me to maximize the video screen, instead of always having to keep the screen small (3"x4")?

Is Firefox churning my Powerbook? When I have more than a few tabs open, I hear (and see- on my little menubar app) heavy hard drive activity. It feels like it gets stuck in some kind of endless swap and the performance of the machine seems to suffer. More importantly, the noise drives me nuts. I suspect Firefox memory management issues. I know Firefox has a bad rep in this dept. Suggestions? Tweeks? Opera?
