I have a 1TB secondary drive in my desktop computer that I have the root of shared over my local network. Inside are 5 folders, all but one of I want to be accessible over the network (one is a backup folder I don't want accessible to other network computers). Before I reinstalled my OS I had figured some way of changing the permissions so that if I was on the desktop itself I could get into the backup folder, but if I was on any other computer on the network I could see the shared drive and modify any folder but the backup one. I just recently reinstalled Windows Vista (Went from 32 bit to 64 bit) and now I can’t remember how I had set the permissions. [more inside]

I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard. It has two admin accounts. Some time ago I stopped using account "A" in favor of new account "B" (the reason behind the creation of account B isn't relevant to this question, however). If I delete user account "A," what precautions must I take to ensure the preservation of the files created under "user A," and what automatically happens to the ownership of those files?

I am currently attempting to migrate files from an NT 4.0 file server to a NetApp filer appliance. Our current copy process (using Robocopy) will replace the target permissions with the source permissions. We would prefer to merge source permissions with target permissions, leaving any differing target permissions intact. [more inside]

Serverfilter: My office is in the process of migrating to Windows Server 2003 for Fileserving. We constantly have issues with newly created files. Whenever they are placed on the server by a user, the immediately lose rights to do anything with the file. All other users attempting to access the files are also denied. This is just beyond frustrating. Any ideas what is happening and how to fix it? [more inside]

Managing User Permissions: I'm reworking an existing system that has a fairly granular permission system and am looking to make it easier to use. At the risk of sounding like a complete clown1, I've recently seen at least one OS permission system where permissions are encoded with ids that are (I think) all powers of 2, which allows the system to discern whether a user has access to a given permission from the sum of the user's permission ids. Can someone explain how this works? [more inside]

A major publisher has approached me about using a photograph that I posted on my website that was originally taken by my dad (who, for reference, passed away a few years ago). According to the person who contacted me, the image would take up about a half-page in the interior of the book and they are interested in a quote for both world and North American rights. Can anyone give me a notion of what sort of compensation would be normal for this sort of thing and what the correct procedure might be? Thanks!

Windows XP Home. I would like to control access to certain folders so that other users can't access them. Is there either:
A. A way as administrator to hide the folders, and then somehow prevent other users from accessing the "Show hidden files and folders" option in explorer:
B. A FREE utility to control access to folders. I have searched and searched, but I can't find any completely free ones.
Thank you! [more inside]

I backed up my /library/webserver/documents folder to a firewire HD. When I dragged it back, the permissions went all kablooey:
drwxr-xr-x 36 root admin 1224 16 Jan 16:58 Documents
sudo chmod 755 Documents does not give groups write privileges.
1. Do I just need to go read a good chmod tutorial, or is something aberrant happening here?
2. Is there any way to apply appropriate permissions recursively?
Many thanks. [more inside]
