1.5k, 3 weeks, where to?

Need travel advice: 2 adventurous law students post-bar, passports in hand. My girlfriend and I are both entering our third year of law school, and our thoughts have turned to a post-bar trip. Some info: figure a budget of $1k-2k, $1.5k would be about perfect. It would be in August, let's say a maximum of 3 weeks, 4 if you have something kickass that we would have the scratch for. I'm of the extreme-sports type (whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, etc.). She isn't, but is well-traveled and fairly adventurous. We're both kind of foodies. I can muddle my way through basic instructions in spanish, and she can do the same in german. We're both mid-20s. Not big into clubs, and would like to find a happy medium between sitting on a beach all day and cycling 70 miles a day. We've both seen some of Europe, and I've lived in NZ for 6 months.

Where to?

Children of the Road

Novel research Filter: What were immigration requirements for kids in 1970's. Could a child under a certain age travel without a passport or birth certificate in the 1970's? I remember crossing the Mexican Border and only being asked my country of origin. Did young children need tourist visas?

I remember a far more relaxed attitude towards travel at least toward children. BTW, the children in this book are the children of hippie parents and would therefore be subject to more scrutiny. How much scrutiny might they receive in terms of documentation?

Will my permanent resident visa be transferred to my new passport?

Will my permanent resident visa be transferred to my new passport? I am in the UK as a permanent resident, and I have the little sticker in my US passport to prove it.

However, my passport expires next May, and I'm incredibly paranoid that when I do renew my passport, the permanent residency visa won't be with it.

The US Embassy website says nothing about it, and the UK Visas, Borders and Immigration Agency, and Home Office seem to be more concerned about immigrants getting in than helping current residents.

I realise this is incrediblyimm irrational, but can someone just reassure me that, yes, I will have my permanent residency sticker, and that, no, I won't be deported the next time I travel?

Oh, Canada *sigh*

I'm going to Canada this morning and cannot find my birth certificate. I applied for my passport in mid April, and of course, have not received it. So I'm left with nothing but my state ID, a chatty little statement that my passport is being processed, and a tremendous headache.

Are there any other documents I can bring with me to prove that I'm a US citizen? And... well, how screwed am I?

Land entry into Canada

Planning to drive to Toronto on Memorial Day weekend. I know the requirement to have a passport to go to Canada by land entry points doesn't come into effect until next year but... anybody here have actual experience of crossing at one of the Niagara entry points without a passport? This is a fairly late decision to go so no time to get passports but we will ensure we have "real" ID with us like Birth Certificates and expired passports as well as drivers licenses . What is the chance we will get hassled by always-happy immigration agents either going into Canada, or more importantly coming back into the US?

Should I trust passport expediting services?

Are passport expediting services legit? I'll be traveling in less then a month, and, like a total dumbass, I've put off getting my passport. According to the USPS website, you can get your passport "expedited" for a $60 fee, and receive the document in a couple weeks. However, I found out today that they have a tremendous backlog, and expedited passports are now taking closer to 4 weeks. This is obviously cutting it a bit too close for comfort.

So, I do a google on US passports and all of these passport expediting services come up. Are these services legit? They promise to obtain a passport within days or weeks. This place is even a member of the Better Business Bureau.

The whole thing seems legit, but still, I wonder....

Fingerprinting without Fingers

BodypartCuriosityFilter - I just read a news article where Tom Ridge wants fingerprints on passports. I also have seen, (I'm assuming due to security concerns), increased requests/demands for fingerprints in banks, at customs, etc.

So, my question is this - what happens when they run into a double hand amputee? Do they get a prosthetic/hook/deviceprint? Or, does someone make a note that says 'no hands'? Or is something else done?

Can a Canadian citizen travel to Cuba via Canada on a US passport?

My husband is a Canadian citizen and resident who also holds an American passport. His Canadian passport has expired and he doesn't have time to renew it before a trip we are planning to take with my parents (he also can't find his birth certificate). We're booking last-minute, and a lot of good deals for Cuba are coming up. Is it at all possible for him to travel to Cuba through Canada on his U.S. passport? [+]

Passport Help

Passport issue: Suddenly, the day before departure, I discover 2 facts. 1) South Africa requires a complete blank visa page in a passport for a tourist's entry. 2) My passport has no such pages remaining. WTF? Anyone ever hear of this before, and been barred from an entry because of it?
