How do you balance graduate school and raising a kid?

I will be starting a highly ranked MBA program in August with a full ride. I already have one graduate degree, but this time I have an added degree of difficulty: I am now a mom. Does anyone have advice for balancing going back to school with the needs of a three year old? [more inside]

what to expect when your best friend is expecting?

My best friend is a few weeks out from the birth of her first child. Mom, dad, and baby are healthy and well-appointed. Everything is great! But inspired by anecdotes and first-hand experience, I am growing increasingly terrified that our friendship will necessarily falter and/or fade in light of this incalculably life-altering event. Can folks with similar experience give me a heads-up as to what can, should, or could happen next? Any tips or tricks that might help a person figure out how to offer the right combination of support and space to their new parent friends? [more inside]

Newbie Needs Resources on Pregnancy, Childbirth, Parenting, etc.

I am a pregnant for the first time, and looking for resources (primarily web, but not limited to it) on pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. This shouldn't be so hard, right? But I really want blogs, Tumblrs, Twitters, websites, etc. that are funny or snarky or absurd, as well as smart, feminist/liberal, crunchy, scientific, and welcoming of a variety of backgrounds/lifestyles. (Maybe not all at once, but I'll take what I can get.) I'm coming up short. Help? [more inside]

Where should we go for a baby hiatus?

My wife and I have been working together in a pretty intense, all consuming job for the last 5 years. We LOVE our chosen career, but it's totally incompatible with having children. Within the next year we hope she will become pregnant, and when that happens we will leave our job (which also provides our housing). We are thinking of taking advantage of the situation and taking a cheap 6-month hiatus to "get to know" our baby, to come to grips with our new reality, to decompress, and to contemplate reinventing ourselves. My son's biological father has friended me on Facebook. What next?

My 8 year old son has never met his biological father and would like to do so. I don't want his heart to break if his bio-father doesn't want contact. I'm only assuming that he doesn't want contact because apart from the befriending we haven't actually said anything to each other via voice or email for about 6 years or so. What is the best way to approach this? [more inside]

Honey, we need a family car

Hi all. Mrs Professorpotato will be giving birth to our first child in late November. We need to upgrade from a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic to something suitable for a baby + all its stuff (seat, pram, accessories), a small dog, and two loving parents. We're looking at a 2013 Jetta in the 17K range as we don't drive much but need reliable transportation. The Sonic has about a 12-14K trade in value and about 22K owing (debt consolidation + depreciation). We can comfortably afford payments of $400-500 per month. Anyone been in a similar situation? Tips? Thanks. PP.

How to talk to my partner about having kids when I don't want them

Separating Twins into Different Classes at School?

My (boy / girl) twins will be entering kindergarten this September. We've been asked if we want them placed into separate classes, or left together in the same class. Need to give them our answer by Monday and frankly, I'm at a loss and have no idea what I should do. If you are a parent of school-age or older twins, can you please share what you did and why? If you yourself are a twin, how did your parents handle it? How did it work out? Other knowledgeable anecdotes and advice welcome. Links to any online resources I can read on the topic would also be appreciated.

Who were we back then?

At the end of December, my wife is due to give birth to our first child. At the end of November I would like to record a series of interviews between me and my wife in order to capture a snapshot of our lives before we fall off the cliff into parenthood. I want to be able to look back at the video in a few decades time and for the answers we gave to transport us back to who we were, how we thought, and how we lived before we had children. What were our fears, hopes, dreams? What questions should we ask each other to reveal the kind of responses I'm hoping for? [more inside]

Baby Daughter Daddy

Help me with gender disappointment. My wife and I just had an ultrasound and found out our baby will be a girl. I was hoping for a boy because I never knew / met my father. My dad was a completely absent f*ck-up. I was hoping to somehow fill that void by giving my son what I never had and teaching him the things I had to learn on my own. I know I will be overjoyed when my daughter is born, but right now, I am feeling quite sad. What is a good way to look at this, and what can I look forward to with having a girl
