This is driving me insane. What is the name of the 19th century American folk painter, called something like Franz Vogl, Kogl, Vogel, Fogel - something Austrian sounding - who drew very distinctive landscapes featuring buildings with mildly distorted perspectives and a lot of horizontal lines, usually titled below with calligraphic captions like "Miss Joanna Cunningham's House." So, it's time to paint my 100 year old house in Portland. How to choose colors? Are there any good online resources, in particular image galleries of homes painted specific colors? Help me identify a painting I saw, loved, and forgot... A group of "bohemians" are eating/drinking/sitting under a bridge... there may or may not be a bonfire... it may or may not be night... I use the word "bohemian" because it has stuck in my mind... I don't know whether that's part of the title, whether the painting is German, or whether it just struck me as abstractly "bohemian" - I had just become an artist :> - I saw it in a museum, most likely in NY, San Francisco, or London - sorry for the slight reeds of info - anything sound familiar to anyone?

My grandmother just gave me an old framed print of a 1903 painting entitled "Summer-Girl" by a James Arthur. I haven't had any luck finding out who Mr. Arthur was, but he seems to have been a capable artist and popular enough to have prints made of his work. There's a torn look to the top of the print, as though it were ripped from a book of prints, but I can't find any info about that book or where the image comes from. If anyone knows more about James Arthur, this picture or his other work, I would be most grateful. Thanks!

I live in Madison WI and am looking to move to a larger city, under the impression that being in a larger city will provide me with more exposure and greater opportunities. I was thinking of moving to the outskirts of Chicago because it's close to my family in Madison and I love it there. I also miss Denver CO where I was born, but am unsure what kind of an art community it has. Does anyone know what cities are best for making a living as an artist? I have a degree in illustration but am also trying to get into gallery shows as well if that helps. Thank you very much for any advice.

How do I find out who owns this painting? I would like to use Thomas Gotch's "The Child Enthroned" to illustrate an article in a scholarly publication. I need to get a good b/w reproduction of it and permission to publish worldwide in print and online. The trouble is, I can't work out where it is, and so don't know who to write to for permission etc. I've tried ARTSTOR and google, but am not getting anything - how do art historians go about sourcing material like this? Given that it's on wikimedia commons, do I even need to?
