My TiVo Series 2 has finally died. The hard drive has failed. I could replace the hard drive, but I'd like to upgrade my general environment. What are my options if I still want to be able to watch live TV with PVR functions?

Can I extract subtitles from TV shows that I record on a PVR into an *.srt file? I'm recording TV in Australia; my PVR records into files called *.ts, which I believe might be mpeg2, but also contain the subtitles that are broadcast. I've been compressing the recordings into avi files with Freemake, but then I lose the subtitles. Is there an easy to use program that will take a *.ts file and output an avi and and srt file? I've tried Subrip, but it didn't recognise the *.ts file. Thanks!

I want to be able to record TV shows for both analogue and digital TV. I've done some research and have figured out that I basically have three options; a PVR, a PlayTV peripheral for my PS3 and last of all, a TV Capture Card for my laptop. I've done some research on all of these and have worked out some pros and cons but can't make up my mind. Help me decide what the best option is.

What's the deal with DVRs in America in 2009? Can I buy one off the shelf and take it home and hook it to the cable and use it successfully like a digital VCR or am I "supposed" to get one from my cable provider and get billed a monthly fee for some program-guide service I do not want?

I have a Series 2 Tivo. After 5 months of no TV at all, I have TimeWarner cable again. In my area, T-W uses the Sci. Atlanta DVR tuner. It's less expensive than Tivo, by several $ a month. Is Tivo worth the extra $ and hassle?

What would be my best source for HD content and the best PVR to capture that content? I just purchased a new HDTV. I have a Direct TV Tivo box that is only standard def. I figure as long as I have an HDTV though, I should try to get the most out of it. It seems my options are Direct TV with their HD PVR, a Direct TV HD receiver and an HD TiVo or MythTV set up, cable and one of their PVRs or cable and a Tivo or MythTV set up.

I have disconnected the SCART connector between our television and PVR. I did this in part because I think Freeview sends some signal at 4am which wakes up the TV and therefore everyone in the house. Is it really a disadvantage not to use a SCART connection?

My grandpa enjoys recording TV shows off his satellite feed (DishNet, I believe). The problem is, while the VCR (heh) has a timer, it cannot change the channels and what not. So I found out that he gets up a few times a night to change the channel and what not. I think some sort of PVR is in order. What is the cheapest/simplest thing I can get?

I'm looking for reccomendations for
Linux PVR software for a security camera application. I want to be able to store a lot (limited only by hard disk space) of high resolution video from a 3 chip DV camera (which will go through a TV tuner card). So far this is rather standard, but I have the (unusual?) requirement of needing to be able to store a lot of metadata from sensors with the video. (more inside!)

Can WinTV PVR USB 2.0 MCE Edition be used with Win 2K? When I purchased it I did not realize I was getting the MCE Edition which apparently does not include the MPEG codecs and has an external IR sensor for use with Windows XP Media Center Edition. The non-MCE version is supposed to work with Win 2K. Should I return this or can I get it to work fully with Win2K ?
