I bought some things at a privately-owned grocery store today and the point-of-sale (POS) software display that showed how much I owed was a stunningly beautiful work of MS-DOS-style ANSI design. At the top of the screen it said "ERD POS" or something like that. The digits for the cost total were even bigger and fancier than this, but that image captures the general era. What was it? And how old is it? Thanks!
Researching restaurant POS systems. Have a suggestion of a product or just things to be aware of? [more inside]
I'm opening up a popup shop in November. The building is not wired for internet and the landlord doesn't want to wire it as such due to the short-term lease. I know about mobile payment systems like Square, but none that I can determine can take Debit in Canada (they're credit card only). This does not work for me. Are there non-Square alternatives that do take debit in Canada? Thanks.
I'm part of a committee organizing a fairly large event. I'm looking for an app, or online provider that would allow people to go to a web page on their phones to order drinks/food and have that order sent to a central computer (at the bar for this event) and then wait staff would then take the food/drink to their suite. I've looked at placing a tablet and square reader in each "suite", however there are some security risks with that. The other option is to create a web page that sends the orders to a wireless printer (located in the bar), and then the wait staff would collect the funds when the food/drink is delivered. I was hoping someone knew of a service that would accomplish this easily. I know there are several tablet based POS systems (used in sushi restaurants, for example), but this event is only a few days long and it does not make sense to invest in thousands of dollars of equipment. Thanks for your help!
Do you have experience using the SquareUp register for a business that does a hundred or more transactions a day? Do you like it? Would you recommend any of the alternatives? Sail? Intuit? [more inside]

I was asked to recommend a software/hardware solution that would enable our local farmers market to allow patrons to visit different vendor tables, choose their items and pay at a central pay station. Currently, patrons get handed a slip and present a number of slips at the pay station. I look to you, oh crowd, as this area of technology is not my strong suit.
Mom's opening a brick and mortar store and we're shopping for point-of-sale software. We're looking for a system that will accept credit cards and EBT (basically foodstamps on a debit card) and haven't bought any of our computer hardware yet. So, feel free to mention software for Mac or PC. Difficulty: Need support for random weights/prices. [more inside]

Does anyone have suggestions for a good typeface for a point-of-sale receipt printer? I have a project to design messages printed on the bottom of a cash register receipt. These are B&W thermal printers, about 200-250 DPI. The text is 6-12 points. We're going primarily for readability and cleanliness and we're happy to pay for quality. Before we go with what we already have (Verdana, Arial, etc.), we'd love suggestions for what might be better.
A random person in a city I don't live in called me and said he was seeing two charges for $155 each on his bank statement, and his bank says I'm the party that the payments were made to. What kind of scam is this, how did I get involved, and what's my responsibility? [more inside]

If retail space is really lorded over by bean counters, why do big boxes build so many checkouts that sit unused? On the morning after Thanksgiving, the north Dallas Super Target I went in briefly only had 9 out of 24 registers open. Why do they build them this way? Has anyone ever seen 90%+ of them open?
