What are useful/fun/collaborative things that can be done with a PDA, computer and a small GPS device these days?

My future father-in-law drives a semi for a national trucking company and currently uses a PDA with GPS capabilities for navigation. He's not entirely satisfied with this. [more inside]

PDA recommendations:
Needs: Must have CF slot, 802.11b.
Wants: External GPS unit which will work with both my laptop & the PDA
Budget: 399$ or less, not including GPS/additional memory. Must come with standard accessories - cradle, cable, charger, etc.
Etc: Add-on software for viewing PDFs, Word/Excel files, map software.
