Looking for a better sound scheme for my PC

Ever since I've had a PC I've either had to endure the MS Sound scheme or some amatuer wavs that were horrific. What I'm looking for are pleasant sounds that say like, when you have a critical error, you hear a chorus vocal by Enya instead of "DING!" [more inside]

Taking screenshots of video?

Anyone know of the best way to take screenshots of video on a PC? I notice that DVDs and mpegs and avis all seem to do a weird matte screen thing where video is projected "above" the video player on your screen, so all screengrabs are blank. There must be a hack to get a simple grab every now and then off this sort of video. Anyone ever figure this out?

Modern-day Consumer Reports?

Where do you go for product reviews and comparisons? I recently bought a bunch of audio and PC hardware with mixed results. What's the latest in anti-malware for the PC?

I've been called upon to immunize a friend's PC against all sorts of malware (after re-installing the OS and apps to recover from the current infestation). Since I moved completely to Mac a while ago, I've lost touch with the current state of PC health. I intend to install NAV, AdAware, Spybot S&D, and SpywareBlaster, as well as the latest Win2k patches. I'll push Firefox, too. What else should I do to protect my friend's PC? How do I remove this computer virus?

My mother's computer has picked up a persistant trojan virus. She's over 1,000 miles away so I can't work on her PC myself, so I've been talking her through things on the phone. AVG Free 7.0 detects the virus and claims to remove it, but it always comes back the next time she scans. The only thing she can tell me about the virus is that AVG removes a file with a mixture of English and Cyrillic letters in it. Any idea how I can help her slay this thing once and for all?

Recomendations for a small, cheap, home media center

Macmini alternatives. I was considering purchasing a Mac Mini to make it a relatively inexpensive home media center, but after upgrading the hard drive to 80GB, adding Bluetooth for a wireless keyboard & mouse, buying the wireless keyboard & mouse, adding 802.11g for home networking, etc the $499 price tag was closer to $850 or more. Can anyone recommend a Windows box manufacturer who makes small form factor PCs for this kind of application?

What are some good message boards about OS X and using fileshares and peripherals on an existing network?

MacPlungeFilter: I'm one of those "IPod users with a PC" who is thinking about taking the plunge to the other side by adding a Mac Mini to my home network. I don't want to clutter up AskMe with too much product-specific chatter, so my question is, where are some good message boards I can read to increase my knowledge, of Mac OS X in general and, in specific, what I will need to do to get the Mac to use fileshares and peripherals on my existing network. All the better if the denizens of the community are not hostile to incoming Windoze users.

Wireless home theater, possible?

looking for the old "Typewriter" widget

Where to buy PC case mod supplies?

uses for an unstable PC

Uses for an unstable PC? A department manager purchased a laptop, I won't say what brand, about a year and a half ago. It's had new RAM and two new hard drives. The power socket is coming off the motherboard. It wasn't cheap and is more powerful than some of the other laptops currently in use. However, you can't be sure it's going to start up on any given morning. We would normally add old laptops to a pool of portable equipment used by our 70+ lecturing staff, but they have enough problems with working equipment. There are several interesting hobbyist projects I could pursue (a digital picture frame springs to mind), but I'd like to at least attempt some sort of work-related deployment when he breaks down and buys a new laptop. Any ideas?

XP Utility for Batch File Management (File Moves, or Multiple Copies)?

For instance, I have a hundred folders, each of which contains a subfolder called Images. Within Images, there are three jpegs. I need to delete the Images folders but not the jpegs.
