I'm currently filling out a profile on elance.com for web development jobs and am being asked to indicate which skills I possess. Some of the choices include MacOSX and Windows. I've also seen people list these on resumes(used to work in HR) in the same section where they list proficiency in MS Word, or even in a separate section for operating systems, for pretty much every kind of job, not just tech-related. I have a new pc hooked up and it gets the Internet all the time, no problem checking e-mail, surfing or pinging anything on the WWW.
However, I have intermittent problems remotely logging into that machine, either via ssh or vnc. If I ping the machine for long intervals of time, I've seen packet loss of around 90%.
Does anybody have a good idea of where to start diagnosing this problem?

Syncing between laptops: How can I easily and automatically sync files and documents between two laptops using Bluetooth? Ideally I want to load up one machine in the vicinity of the other and have all my recent data (documents/data/RSS feeds etc.) syncronised with NO hassle.
Any good apps out there? [more inside]

Help me find all those small but necessary apps, as well as the fun and ostentatious bells and whistles, for my new desktop (linux)! What are your favorites?

I am tired of the P4 Intellistation that picked out of the trash. For some reason all my hard disks keep breaking. I am really tired of having to constantly open up my computer and buying new disks. I'm in the market for a cheap, small Linux PC that can stream HD content over the network. Is there such a thing? Kind of like a Mac mini but not so expensive or powerful. [more inside]

I own a HP rz1715 Pocket PC 2003 ed. I would love to use this device to run Linux or something other than Windows. It has a SD expansion slot so I can increase the memory from 32MB to over 1GB if needed. Thoughts?

What's the best combination of motherboard, cpu, hard drive, and accessories to build a very fast PC? I'd like to pay $350 US or less for the total cost.

My USB2 hard drive will only stay mounted if I keep accessing it. If I don't, within 5 hours or fewer, I can't access files on the drive or even do a directory listing. I can then unmount the HD, power cycle it, and it will mount again as if nothing had happened. If I keep accessing the disk, say by continuously playing an MP3 mix on it, the disk acts completely normal: uptime now (with MP3s playing) is something like 20 hours without the shadow of a problem. Looking for the component suggestions on what is the "sweet spot" as far as price/performance to build a cheap-ish desktop Linux PC.
I've already got a great monitor and a KVM switch, just need to build the box. I'd like to keep the cost in the $500 range.

Does anybody have any experience with the relatively new MediaREADY 5000 from Video without Boundaries. Seems to be cheaper than XP Media Centers. But appears to have low storage. The URL is http://www.vwbinc.com/products.html

What PC games don't require any installation whatsoever? Or put another way, what PC games could I burn to CD/DVD and play on a system that I don't want to copy any files to? Linux-plus-games-on-a-DVD suggestions are also welcomed, although I would prefer games that would run on an existing XP installation.
