I often have a group of files open that I'm working on as part of a project: maybe a Word doc, an Excel spreadsheet and a couple of others. Does anyone know an app that will let me "save" those as a group, and then open them all again with the same window positions?
I sometimes use window managers but haven't come across something that will open the files as well.
I have been using the public betas of Mac OSX Yosemite for a while now, and I recently had to wipe my hard drive and start over. When I went to download the installer again from the App Store today, Yosemite is no longer listed under my "Purchases" as it had been before. Am I the only one this is happening to? [more inside]
I have 1000s of photos from the past 12 months. I'd like to make a movie out of these with each photo being displayed for 0.1 seconds (or something ridiculously short). How do I do this? iMovie has a min of 1 second and that's too long.
Some Mac specific tool that doesn't cost too much (say under $30) would be helpful
So yesterday I read about this cool new OS X application, Loop Findr
, that apparently automagically analyzes an MP4 and finds segments that are ripe for looping as an animated GIF. Unfortunately, I can't make it work. Who can? [more inside]
My uncle has given me a big old box of FINAL CUT STUDIO, which is an upgrade from FINAL CUT PRO of the early 2000s. So, how can I now buy FINAL CUT PRO? [more inside]

I am thinking of buying an external HD to store my iPhoto, iTunes, Lightroom, and possibly iMovie libraries so I can switch between my iMac and Macbook Air. Will this work? Thoughts, tips, caveats? [more inside]
I have a MacBook Pro from 2009, with a 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo and 8 GB RAM. I am running Mavericks on it, but I find that it can be slow when it is accessing the disk a lot, and it runs hot. It meets the minimum spec for Mavericks but I am thinking that I am over-stretching it. I am planning to upgrade the 500GB HD to a 1TB hybrid. Would this be better able to run Mavericks or should I think of stepping back to something like Snow Leopard when I change the hard disk?
For testing purposes at work, they would like this magic to happen - put different iterations of OS X (e.g. snow leopard, lion, mt lion, mavericks) each on its own partition on the same physical disk. Apple L2 support has disavowed knowledge of such potential doings, despite there being support articles indicating that at least two versions of OS X on the same physical disk (and different partitions) is possible. Either a) it's doable or b) it's not doable. However... [more inside]

Some really horrible stuff was going down at work. I took absolutely no part in it, and even acknowledged that it may not be legal. I did this all over email, and even received responses back acknowledging this. I was explicitly threatened that if i wasn’t going to be a part of it, then i was to “forget about it or lose your job”.
So recently, they all got busted. And like a bunch of cowards, they all blamed it on me. And because I’m the low girl on the totem pole, it looks like I might have been the one doing all this stuff (without ANY proof). But I have proof! [more inside]
Updating to OS X 10.9.3 appears to have broken my ability to see other devices on my local network. Any ideas on how to fix? [more inside]
Specifically, it's a mplayer virus. It has infected Google Chrome and Firefox, and is showing infuriating pop-up ads and frequently redirecting the browser to ad-like pages. Who knows what else it's doing/stealing/collecting. This may be what I deserve for trying to download some TV, but I need to get rid of it. Running Mac OSX 10.8.5. [more inside]

For some recent while, probably since updating the OS X Mavericks, Microsoft Word for OS X keeps coming to the foreground on its own when I'm doing other things, as long as a document is open in Word. If I click out to the Finder, Word makes itself the frontmost program. If I click into the browser, Word comes forward. [more inside]
Several years ago, I created a shell script (or Bash or I don't know what) that establishes a secure shell proxy connection to my home router when I type a short command into Mac OS X's Terminal. Now, I need to edit that script, but I can't find it for the life of me. I've tried searching on likely names looking at both visible and invisible files. I've tried searching for content that I know must be part of the script, but nothing comes up. Rather that executing a command, is there a way to open it in a text editor or display the actual script if I don't know the location of the file on my computer? Is there any other way I could go about finding this? Is there a location that whatever guide I was following would have suggested I save this script? I tried looking in usr/bin but nothing in there seems likely.
On my Mac (OS X Mavericks), some fullscreen apps don't let me task switch away from them. AT ALL. Needless to say, this is ridiculously annoying. Is there a workaround? [more inside]
A non-geeky friend just called me asking if I had any knowledge of Final Draft - to which the answer is "minimally" - and asked for help, which I was unable to provide, in recovering or repairing a file. I am now wondering if there is something I didn't think of... [more inside]
I could keep trying different options but I'm on a deadline and would love a recommendation for a reliable, "package" friendly solution.
I'm working in Storyboard Pro with Mavericks and so far:
-Google Drive keeps intermittently kacking out.
-Box won't accept Storyboard project files.
Storyboard projects contain many nested subfolders, holding many, many more tiny vector graphic files. I don't need more than a couple of gigabytes of space but it needs to be free.
I've left Dropbox because of the Rice appointment, not because I dissatisfied with the product.
After another data-loss scare, I'm trying to actually get a system in place for backing up a couple home computers. [more inside]

My mother has an early-2010 Mac Mini. Apple says she can upgrade to 10.9.2 for free, but she's not sure if it's a good idea, so she asked me.
Her model is on the official compatibility list, but is it a good idea to upgrade? Is there likely to be a noticeable performance hit, or stability issues? Have you personally had a good experience with OSX Mavericks on older Intel macs?
I would like Transmission, my OS X BitTorrent client, to only download and upload torrents when I'm on my home Wi-Fi network, and to stop all activity automatically when I'm not on this network. How can I achieve this? I'm open to using different software if need be.
Digital librarians of Metafilter: I am looking for installation and configuration documentation to get Fedora Commons 3.7 up and running on a Mac OS X (Mavericks) server. I'm trying to help a relative who's in a full panic about computer security, brought on both by the alarmist mainstream reporting about the gotofail bug and by some coincidental hardware issues with her OS X machine. and that worked just great...only it did something to the other partition which has caused it not to mount, to refer to itself as disk3s5.
It refuses to mount and if I click "verify disk" it says the disk needs to be repaired and to click repair disk. When I do so I get "disk utility can't repair the disk".
So what on Earth did disk utility do to the other partition which I did not ask it to touch?
The original job was completed because the file system of the other partition was NTFS and it's now MacOS Extended.

I want one phone number to use for talk and text, and I want to be able to send and receive texts on my iPhone or from my Mac without using a browser or a second phone number. Currently, Google Voice does this, but it looks like Google is merging Google Voice into Hangouts this spring, and 3rd party apps will no longer work. GAH! I love being able to send and receive texts for my real number on my Mac (I use GrowlVoice). I'm currently on AT&T for my iPhone, but I'm more than willing to switch to another carrier. What are my options?

Why is cut/copy/duplicate greyed out in Apple Preview app? When I open PDFs or XLS files in Preview by double clicking on them, I'm able to select text but cannot ever copy or cut it. Someone suggested duplicating the file first, but that option is also greyed out. 10.9.1 Why? Thanks!
Please note: I am using Mac OS X
While I have managed to burn two playable DVDs from one of my .mp4 files (once with Burn and once with Toast), the video, which is widescreen, ends up in 4:3 on the DVD, and I don’t know why.
(When I tried to convert an .mp4 file to “DVD” using FfmpegX, I let the conversion run overnight, and it was only 33% finished by morning.)

In Logic Pro, is there a way to add two Shure SM81 microphones (connected via Shure USB-to-XLR adapters) as separate tracks for recording? Currently, the only way I've been able to bring them into Logic Pro is as a merged or aggregate
input device, which means the signals from the two mics are merged before going into one track. I do not want this, but instead wish to feed the signal from the two mics into two separate tracks. Is there a way to do this in Logic Pro with the equipment I have? [more inside]

I currently use approximately four+ computers with all major OS'es (Mac, Windows, Linux-Ubuntu) between work and home. Plus an Ipod Classic for portable music listening. Problem is keeping my music library up to date on all machines, or synced together. If I create a playlist, or change ratings, genre, etc. the results also aren't propagated to the other machines. On Windows and Mac I've been using Itunes but I'm not necessarily tied to it, but it does work on 2 of the 3 OS'es.
There are some previous similar questions, but all look several years old.
When I burn a CD, some songs that sound fine in iTunes on my computer will inexplicably have between 3-20 seconds of 'silence' at the beginning, thus causing my car's CD player to skip them if I don't fast forward to the actual music...WTF? (do my best to give some Tech Specs inside!) [more inside]
According to Disk Utility, I have only 36 GB / 500 GB free, and it's been pretty full for a while. For the last year I've taken this at face value, but today I looked into it closer, and found that according to other applications (Disk Inventory X and JDiskReport), I apparently should have more like 200 GB free. How can I figure out what is using this extra space? [more inside]

I'm all ready to upgrade to Mavericks (OSX 10.9) except for one thing.
On Snow Leopard (10.6.8), I am able to open Safari's "Activity window" and see most video files as they're loading there (however, not certain sites like Hulu). From that window, it's an easy Option-Click to download said video file. Safari 7.0 doesn't have this ability. Is there a Safari 7.0 add-on or something that will bring this ability back to Safari? Hi, I am looking for a whole-window screenshot application for Mac OS X. I have and use Paparazzi
, but need to take SS images of login-state dependent webpages, which Paparazzi can't do.
I would prefer an app that works as SnapzPro used to, where the SS includes all the content below the fold of a webpage and the screenshot-taking app does not need or gain independent login access to the target page.
Thanks in advance!
