I have my entire iTunes library on an external hard drive. I have a computer that has no problem accessing the iTunes library on the external hard drive, but for any other purpose refuses to acknowledge the existence of said drive, because it's a powerpc external hard drive. I would like to figure out how to transfer my iTunes library to a brand new external hard drive to use with my new mac. [more inside]
Wifi is dropping on two Macbook Airs on certain networks but not on others while all other devices are fine. How to fix? [more inside]
I want to start a few seconds video recording prompted by a gun blast. Plan is to attach a USB camera to a spotting scope and have my Mac start recording a few seconds of video the moment a shot is fired. The start and stop of the Video recording can be done with Automator ad/or Apple script. I am looking for an app or hardware solution to prompt the recording. It could be an application that starts a script once a sound exceeds a certain level. Perhaps even better a motion sensor that will sense the shock in the rifle stock. Thanks for your help. Rogier
My machine has gotten sluggish, and I think I'm going to try a clean install, which it's never had. I understand how to wipe a partition and do a complete install from a bootable USB drive. What I'm not sure about is getting my documents off my backups. Is it as simple as using Migration Assistant? [more inside]
I need advice on which monitors will work well for my older MacBook Pro. [more inside]
I run OSX 10.10 (Yosemite). I have some programs that need the current Java runtime environment; I have some programs that need a legacy JRE (6). I need to use both of them. Is there a solution (virtual machine?) that lets me do that? [more inside]
I make use of an encrypted volume (.dmg file on OS X Mavericks). Now and then, I manage to forget to unmount this volume after use. To plug this security hole, I'd like to find a utility that automatically unmounts the volume after a period of inactivity. Does anyone know whether such a tool exists? (Googling about has yielded some AppleScript based solution proposals. I'm not too much a fan of AppleScript and would prefer a daemon based utility.)
I'm looking for a monitor for my MacBook. I have a Thunderbolt at work and it is great, but the $1k price seems Apple markup priced. Is there another market comparable in price? Or is the picture and sound not really matched? It has been forever since I actually looked at a monitor. Bonus question: On OS X with a gigantic monitor how do I lock things to the left and the right as if I were using two separate monitors? I lose track of things on this monitor.
I wish to automate downloading an mp3 from a specific web directory (I have permission, and it is not password protected) each week, but only the single mp3 file that has changed since the previous week. [more inside]
Word 2008 has stopped opening on my mid-2012 Macbook Pro, running Yosemite 10.10.3. Just bounces a couple times in the dock and then hangs; Microsoft Error Reporting hangs too. [more inside]
I rely on Apple's Spotlight search to find files on my MacBook Pro, because I am so bad at organising stuff into folders. But recently, it hasn't been working. I look for a word I know is in the file contents – like a Word doc – and it simply doesn't show up in the Spotlight results. I've tried re-indexing Spotlight but it hasn't helped. [more inside]
After upgrading to 10.10.3 I have a repeat of a problem I had months ago, and still no satisfactory solution. [more inside]
My father's Macbook Pro is consuming bandwidth at a prodigious rate, and he's on a metered data connection (10gb/month 4g data). What should I be sure to disable so he can control when the system wants to run updates? List of what I've already tried inside. [more inside]
I'd like to be able to send/receive text messages on my computer. I have an iPhone and a MacBook Pro, but I DON'T want to update to Yosemite. Is this possible? [more inside]
Simple question, I hope, but this is driving me nuts. On an iMac with Yosemite, I would like to be able to leave the keyboard for, say, ninety minutes—without getting automatically logged out. [more inside]
What's the cheapest way to get Windows working on a Mac? [more inside]
I just got my new MacBook Pro and I want to get to work, but I cannot figure out why active windows remain in the background. Clicking on an inactive window doesn't bring it to the foreground. If I want to actually see what's in the active window, I have to minimize the inactive window that's on top. I've looked at different settings but I don't see how to change this. Help is much appreciated.
I was informed by the CIO that an email that I sent out of OWA from Safari, OSX Mavericks had dodgy source code attached. See a text file of source code. [more inside]

I need an external mic or webcam that will work with my aging MacBook Pro in order to tutor via Skype and to create recordings of my screen for video tutorials. I can't use the built-in mic because I want to do all of this with the laptop shut and hooked up to a Cinema Display. [more inside]
I have a very basic (I think) requirement infrequently where I need to slightly modify a picture (usually a line drawing or a jpg of an event layout or similar) so that I can extract the track map from it. I keep bouncing between software that doesn't do enough to overwhelmingly complicated and too involved to do quickly. Please translate what is available in my own perspective please. I am open to the possibility that I am outside the realms of simple software, but am ever hopeful. [more inside]
My small company has been using Dropbox to share files, but this is no longer suitable due to both security concerns and the fact that we're growing. We have a small local network of computers running OSX. What's the best file-sharing solution for us? Requirements under the fold. [more inside]
I have a 2-year-old MacBook Pro with a 500 GB SSD running Yosemite. It was fine until 3 days ago, when the computer slowed to a crawl. I rebooted several times; each time, it got slow again. I eventually realized that it slowed down when trying to back up to the external hard drive. I ran Disk Utility, which found no errors on the SSD or the external hard drive. [more inside]
I have a late 2010 13" Macbook Air with 2 gb of RAM with OSX 9 (Mavericks) installed that's really showing its age. I'd like to keep it going for another year or so, and I'm interested in strategies to do this. Upgrade, downgrade, leave things alone? [more inside]
This makes no sense to me, but I have lost a super important email I just received by accidentally hitting the "K" key while it was highlighted in my Apple Mail inbox. It is my only copy of an important day-long interview for an academic job. I have tried searching Mail by sender and subject, searching my computer for same including searching content, looking in Mail's trash folder. The Finder's trash is empty. I am stumped, and worried. I really don't want to write back to say that I lost the email. Where could it be??
I have looked through the older questions here, and here and there are plenty of great potentials there, but I have a question about key remapping in hardware/firmware to which I cannot find a clear answer. [more inside]
What's the best way to keep podcast subscriptions and listens on two Macs and an iPhone synced that supports downloading episodes (i.e., not web-only)? If the answer involves iTunes, I might need an explanation of how to fix it since each copy of iTunes seems to be doing its own thing. I'm not looking for live slinging/transfer of audio to another device since the Macs are in completely different locations and the phone isn't always around.

I'm looking at buying a low-end Macbook for web browsing and MS Office (primarily Powerpoint). Basically, it's coming down to a 2009 or 2010 Macbook, as I'd prefer to run Yosemite, but I want to keep my budget below $500. I have used a friend's 2009 Macbook fairly regularly and I'm happy with its general performance, but I have a few specific questions. [more inside]

I often have a group of files open that I'm working on as part of a project: maybe a Word doc, an Excel spreadsheet and a couple of others. Does anyone know an app that will let me "save" those as a group, and then open them all again with the same window positions? I sometimes use window managers but haven't come across something that will open the files as well.
I have been using the public betas of Mac OSX Yosemite for a while now, and I recently had to wipe my hard drive and start over. I have 1000s of photos from the past 12 months. I'd like to make a movie out of these with each photo being displayed for 0.1 seconds (or something ridiculously short). How do I do this? iMovie has a min of 1 second and that's too long. Some Mac specific tool that doesn't cost too much (say under $30) would be helpful

I have a MacBook Pro from 2009, with a 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo and 8 GB RAM. I am running Mavericks on it, but I find that it can be slow when it is accessing the disk a lot, and it runs hot. It meets the minimum spec for Mavericks but I am thinking that I am over-stretching it. I am planning to upgrade the 500GB HD to a 1TB hybrid. Would this be better able to run Mavericks or should I think of stepping back to something like Snow Leopard when I change the hard disk?
For testing purposes at work, they would like this magic to happen - put different iterations of OS X (e.g. snow leopard, lion, mt lion, mavericks) each on its own partition on the same physical disk. Apple L2 support has disavowed knowledge of such potential doings, despite there being support articles indicating that at least two versions of OS X on the same physical disk (and different partitions) is possible. Either a) it's doable or b) it's not doable. However... [more inside]
