Olympus LS-10 recorder repair?

Olympus LS-10 recorder repair? I can send it to Olympus but they want $85 (plus shipping) as a flat rate. There must be a cheaper option. Anyone know a spot in NYC that does repairs on such things? Thanks in advance.

Olympus LS-10 recorder help?

Olympus LS-10 recorder help? Does anyone have knowledge of the Olympus LS-10 Linear PCM recorder?
MY problem is this: the 4 buttons at the bottom of the device which include "menu" , "list" , "A-B repeat" and Fn" ( all the buttons I need to set the recording quality) will not work. It's almost as if they're locked ( they're not on hold) , but i've checked everything and can't figure what the problem is . The 'record' and 'stop' buttons work fine, but the 4 buttons on the bottom row aren't responding. Anyone have a clue? Thanks.

Looking for non-fugly camera case!

I need a case for my new Olympus E-P1, but I can't find one that I like! I really love the leather one I've been seeing in pictures of the camera everywhere, but that case/strap is hard to find and exorbitantly expensive to boot ($85-$200 everywhere I've found it online). So, is there something similar to that that's under $80 and available in the US? (Yes, I've checked eBay.) Olympus shows something similar for a decent price on their site, but it's not available anymore. If not one like that, is there an attractive case/strap combo of another kind that might fit the E-P1? Or any handy tips for making something on my own? I'm good with crafty type things.

Camera reviews are taking over my sanity

Following my previous question, I've narrowed down my camera options and done a lot of reading, but I'd love some Hivemind input. My Previous Question

Since asking, I've been reading reviews online and went to B&H to play with some of the models I thought I liked. End result, I walked out with two different ideas than when I walked in. Below are the ones I'm considering most and why, but I'm having issues with the reviews I read online because I know every product will irk someone and it's a question of cutting through that to get to what matters.

I'm also trying to keep in mind that a) I'm upgrading a 4 year old camera and b) I don't need perfection on every shot. I'm not ready to make the jump to DSLR because I don't take pictures nearly enough anymore, but I want a camera that can take good landscape shots, a good zoom to take pics at sporting events from bad seats and ability to shoot close up (i.e. Macro). I have pros and cons below. Do you have any experience with these cameras? Anything I'm missing? As I've said, I'm familiar with the review sites and have read extensively. If those are all to be believed, there's no decent camera out there.

*Sony HX 1 - Pros: good zoom, I have media for the camera, familiarity w Sony cameras, good battery life, feels good in my hand, without a doubt the best video capabilities. Cons: 9.1mp, Price, video stuff I don't need (I don't know what 1080i/p means, and I rarely shoot video)

*Nikon P90 - Pros: 24 optical zoom, known for good sports photography, good macro, price. Cons: hate the look and feel of camera, reported poor battery life, no zoom while shooting video.

*Olympus SP-590 - Pros: Price, 26x zoom, good response time with fast photos (sports).Cons: AA battery (although I don't mind this too much, means you're never caight without batteries), dial seems weak

*Canon SX 1 - Pros: 20x zoom, known brand, RAW support, Cons: AA battery (see above), hate hate the fold-out LCD, least zoom (although I'm upgrading from 12x so it's still big jump

So, I'm still torn. At the moment, I'm leaning Olympus but I don't know enough about the brand. I covet the Sony but at 399 even on Amazon (have $65 credit so likely to buy there) it's steep. I came out of B&H really not liking the Canon at all but I feel like I should because it's such a known brand that people love. Nikon was my first choice walking in, but I really don't like the body of this camera.

Anyone have any input or am I destined to eenie meenie miney mo? Thanks in advance!

EV RE50N/D-B mic + Olympus LS-10 recorder = hollow, tinny sound

Recordings made using an ElectroVoice RE50N/D-B microphone with my Olympus LS-10 Linear PCM Recorder sound quiet, tinny and hollow. Why could this be? I have an Olympus LS-10 Linear PCM Recorder and a ElectroVoice RE50N/D-B microphone which I use to record interviews for a show I do that airs on a college radio station. When I transfer the audio from the recorder to my MacBook, the audio sounds hollow, tinny and very quiet. However, the strange thing is, if I shift the balance on the internal speakers to the left or right (not centered), it sounds much much better. Recordings made with the Olympus LS-10's internal microphone (without the EV mic) sound just fine. This same problem existed with another EV mic that I used, so I don't think it's the particular mic I'm using now.

For a while I thought this could be a problem with my MacBook, but then I played one of the interviews on the air and it sounded the same. The audio sounds fine on some computers though. So, basically, I'm at a total loss. Anyone have anything like this happen before or have any thoughts as to why it could be happening? Thanks!!

What are some absolute beginner DSLR tips and tricks my wife can pick up on quickly and start using today? My wife has recently become interested in photography as a hobby or potential career, but has always been a point-and-shoot person. Instead of sinking money into a nice camera and lenses, I decided to borrow a nice DSLR from a friend and let her use it for a day or two to see if it's something she would like.

I know about ISO and white balance and shutter speed in the sense that I know what they are, but not how to utilize them effectively. I want to help her be able to maximize her experience of using the camera, but neither of us have ever really used a DSLR before.

I know that these days you can set a camera to auto and just snap away, but are there any absolute beginner techniques to make your pictures pop like the pros? I know she's not going to be an expert in a day or two of using a DSLR, but is there something that would just take here a few minutes/hours to "get" to really see some results and room for potential growth?

(If it matters, the camera she was looking at buying is a Nikon D40, and the one I was able to borrow is an Olympus E-410.)

Camera Control

How can I control my Olympus E500 with my mac? I'm looking for an affordable (namely free) way to control my Olympus E500 via my iBook. I've tried Olympus Studio -- it's too buggy and slow for my liking; far too pricey for what it is. Are there any alternatives? Ideally, I want a program that can trip the shutter and have the camera upload the image immediately after the exposure is done.

Olympus SP-350 battery/firmware issues

Olympus SP-350: How can I fix the battery issues or update the firmware? (for free) I have an Olympus SP-350. The firmware which comes with the camera (I believe it's 1.31) has the issue where when rechargable batteries lose a small amount of their power after being in the camera, the SP-350 thinks they are empty. So you only get to use a small percentage of the battery's power.

Olympus apparently fixed this problem with firmware 1.4. To get this update you HAVE to use the updating function built into Olympus' proprietary software called the "Olympus Master software." I threw this disk out immediately upon recieving the camera thinking, "I don't need this thing. I use Photoshop." Olympus charges to purchase copies of their "Olympus Master software."

Is there some other way to (a) fix the battery issues or (b) update the firmware without this software or (c) get a copy of this software without paying for it again (I have the damned camera!!)?

This is on a mac.

I'm thinking of buying Olympus EVOLT E-500 8M, what to look for?

I recently found this digital SLR Olympus EVOLT E-500 on sales at costco.com click here
It seems a good deal with a complete package. It's very attempting to me since I'd like to move from point and shoot to DSLR. I'm a beginner amateur. I've read and learned about how SLR works, but with so many choices out there on the market, I'm kinda lost. $699 is right on my budget. However, I'm willing to step up a little bit if there is a better choice for the long run and without paying a whole lot more. On the other hand, stepdown is also an option if major/critical functions are not being compromised.
With your experience and knowledge, what do you think the pros and cons are for Olympus E-500. Say if i get a Canon, or a Nikon DSLR, what models are comparable to E-500, and what will I gain or lose? I'll appreciate it if you can share your thoughts with me. Many thanks.

save the pictures!

My camera recently ate a month's worth of intense picture-taking! About 90% were salvaged by imgsave, but of course the remaining 10% are the best or most important. Each of those broken images completely draws as a thumbnail, but only partially renders when opened. There is no apparent consistency to how much is drawn or which pictures were eaten. The camera is an Olympus Stylus 600, the flash card is an Olympus xD-Picture card 512 MB (MXD512MB, it says on the back). I have an image of the card as-is. All metadata seems to be gone (e.g. date). Help?

Opinions on whether this is the fault of the camera, card, or the xD-PCMCIA card used to transfer them are also welcome - they are all new.

Extracting audio from Olympus VN-900 recorder

Is there a simple way to export the digital audio files from an Olympus VN-900 voice recorder into an iBook G4? I have been gifted with this miniature audio recorder, but the instructions weren't included. I need to record about ten minutes of on-the-fly street interviews, and then email them to someone for editing, and would love to use the recorder rather than lug my iBook and USB headset out into the field. So, is there any way to get the material out of the Olympus (via the tiny Mic or Ear jacks) and into my iBook, short of playing it out loud near the computer mic? (That would sound awful, right?)

How to reformat SmartMedia cards for Olympus cameras after Dazzle?

How can I reformat a SmartMedia card (or several) that are unreadable and unformattable by my Olympus D40 camera? This happened after I deleted pictures off of them on a Dazzle USB reader (using WinXP). Google has failed me as all I find are instructions for changing SMPREP, and that only works with Win98. I did this with 3 cards before I realized they were all trashed as far as the camera goes (they work in all other devices).
