I need a case for my new Olympus E-P1, but I can't find one that I like! I really love the leather one I've been seeing in pictures of the camera everywhere, but that case/strap is hard to find and exorbitantly expensive to boot ($85-$200 everywhere I've found it online). [more inside]

I recently found this digital SLR Olympus EVOLT E-500 on sales at costco.com click here
It seems a good deal with a complete package. It's very attempting to me since I'd like to move from point and shoot to DSLR. I'm a beginner amateur. I've read and learned about how SLR works, but with so many choices out there on the market, I'm kinda lost. $699 is right on my budget. However, I'm willing to step up a little bit if there is a better choice for the long run and without paying a whole lot more. On the other hand, stepdown is also an option if major/critical functions are not being compromised.
With your experience and knowledge, what do you think the pros and cons are for Olympus E-500. Say if i get a Canon, or a Nikon DSLR, what models are comparable to E-500, and what will I gain or lose? I'll appreciate it if you can share your thoughts with me. Many thanks.

My camera recently ate a month's worth of intense picture-taking! About 90% were salvaged by imgsave, but of course the remaining 10% are the best or most important. Each of those broken images completely draws as a thumbnail, but only partially renders when opened. There is no apparent consistency to how much is drawn or which pictures were eaten. [more inside]
