Have 10 days vacation and would like to take a cheap vacation within 1 day drive of South Bend, IN. (Say 10 hrs on road, one-way.) 2 people and we don't have much money ($1500 but maybe pushing it). Don't have to spend all 10 days away but at least 7. Have any cabin suggestions with nice towns or sights nearby? Hoping to eat out once at a decent non-chain restaurant for my birthday. Feel free to post vacation-planning sites if you have any.

[OhioMechanicFilter] I'm driving to Columbus (and maybe Akron) tomorrow to try to buy a car, since I can't find my dream car in Pittsburgh. Before I buy used, I want to have a mechanic go over it, since I don't know enough to spot problems on my own. Any recommendations of who I should go to?

Family legend states that my grandparents had their 1950's, smalltown Ohio house built from (adapted) blueprints they obtained by writing in to a television show. Is this possible? If so, which tv show, and is there any way I can get a copy of the blueprints?

Driving between Cleveland and Milwaukee with a day to spare; any ideas about interesting things to see? Not that interested in Cedar Point. Leaving the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to go to Alpine Valley Music Theater for Pearl Jam's 20 Anniversary concert, if that context will help. Like national parks along with man made attractions.

My father (a widower) is getting remarried quite soon. Can you help me come up with an appropriate, ideally "experience-based" wedding gift for somewhere in the vicinity of southern Ohio? Perhaps even one that isn't going to break the bank? Because if not, I'm sorely tempted to go the "really nice card" route.

Help me edumacate myself on Ohio SB 5! As a former resident of WI, I could find news easily enough because the internet already existed when I lived there and I was familiar with online sources. In my attempts to read more about Ohio, I just don't know where to turn. Obviously national media is out as it's been crap at covering recent events in the midwest. Is there an Isthmus equivalent? A few possibly wonky blogs that are right on?

I pay for my own health insurance in NYC (via
Freelancer's Union) and am moving to Cleveland.
Freelancer's Union has a deal in place where, if I remain a member, I can buy insurance through a company called
Golden Rule, but there appear to be
no advantages of going that route.
So, anyone in Cleveland familiar with self-insurance options? Or a reputable broker?

Tax-filter and estate-filter. I live in Ohio. The deceased lived in Ohio and gave me a certificate of deposit upon her death using a payable on death designation during 2008. I then cashed it out and placed this money in a checking account. I am not otherwise involved with the estate in any way. I have usually used "
free-file" to do my taxes.
Two-part question:
a) does this money count towards adjusted gross income? and if so...um... how? (I know so little about it I'm not sure what I'm asking)
b) assuming my AGI is still under the $56k limit for free-file, is there any other reason why I cannot or should not do my taxes in that matter since I inherited this CD?
