One of my relatives has cancer. They’re getting treatment right now and understand the treatment plan. But since we’re in the US, of course there are insurance and employment woes messing it all up. I need help helping them navigate these issues. [more inside]

My girlfriend (domestic partner, not registered) has had a ton of trouble navigating the new health insurance landscape. The application process this year was confusing as hell. Today we tried to take her in to see her regular doctor of many years, only to be turned away because now that she's on state insurance, her doc can't see her even if we want to pay out of pocket. This is turning traumatic. We need to find someone or someplace to help us sort this out. Help? [more inside]
Hi MeFi, So a bit of a weird situation here. I was laid off in 2013 and at the end of that year I applied for Obamacare. It took FOREVER to get the application going since the website was awful so long story short, it's early 2014 and I get a job with full benefits. I completely forget about the application for Obamacare and it's now January 2015 and I received a letter from CeltiCare Health saying 'hi, here's your coverage card. you are now insured with celticare...' So now, technically, I have two coverages? One from my employer and through Celticare? How does this work? Should I call Celticare and let them know I already have insurance? What benefits are there to having two? Legal or not? Thanks for your help!
I need to obtain some sort of health insurance for myself to cover between now (or February 1) through the end of March. I live in New York. Is it possible to get temporary health insurance through the health benefit exchange, or would I be locked into a longer plan? [more inside]
I'm trying to apply for health insurance through Covered California, and I've reached the "Household" section of their online form. I'm a naturalized citizen. My understanding is that a passport is perfectly valid proof of citizenship, but unfortunately, once I check the "naturalized" radio box, a section pops up prompting me to enter either my naturalization certificate or my certificate of citizenship — neither of which I have, and acquiring which may cost a good chunk of money and also put me past the open enrollment period. How do I get Covered California to accept my passport? Has anyone here been in a similar situation? Thanks! (An extra complication is that I'm not currently in California, though I could probably get my family to act on my behalf if my physical presence is required somewhere.)
Chronically ill, fixed income US expat. Is it possible to get affordable health insurance in the US? This is pretty much a hypothetical question, but I figure I’d do some research anyway. Snowflakes after the fold: [more inside]

My pregnant wife and I are leaving our job at the end of the summer (not our choice) with no new job lined up. We will need to get our own health insurance when we leave the job. We don't really live anywhere now, and we aren't sure where we will have the baby yet, maybe NH, or NY, or RI, or ME, or the VI. Is there an insurance plan that offers us coverage in multiple places? PPO, HMO, walk me through this. This is our first time buying insurance. [more inside]
We just found out the baby we're having any day now is probably not eligible for medical care at birth on her mother's insurance plan. Help! [more inside]
Because my livelihood currently derives from the regular receiving of a remittance from my family, I'm without taxable income and thus eligible under the Affordable Health Care Act for California's state-funded health insurance Medi-Cal. At the same time, I'm in a position to purchase low-grade private health insurance without terrible hardship. Medi-Cal seemed to make sense because it is basically free health care, and I signed up. Mefites have also written positively about it. However, looking now at the stripe of participating providers and hospitals, and, especially, looking at the extremely negative yelp.com reviews that have been posted of these providers and hospitals, I have become scared. ACA penalty question. There is a 99% likelihood that I am about to be hired by a company that will provide me health coverage beginning on April 7th. I have not been given a formal offer, but I have been given verbal assurance, and I have every reason to believe I will receive an offer next week. The ACA deadline is March 31st. Do I need to sign up for ACA to cover the week between March 31 and April 7 in order to avoid paying a penalty? [more inside]
I work at my local County Hospital and for the last two weeks we've had a very low census. I hear rumors that the local Giant HMO and local For Profit Hospital Chain are packed right now. I also know one Local For Profit but Independent and Unaffiliated Hospital is at risk of closing right now because of extremely low census. So for folks who actually work in hospitals (and clinics?) are you seeing a change in number of patients since Obamacare started? [more inside]
I can't choose my choice if I don't know what I'm choosing. Can any Mefites provide pros, cons, doctor or nurse names, locale convenience, or any other information or opinions on various healthcare providers in NYC? I was recently awarded New York State of Health full coverage (i.e. Medicaid) due to unemployment. Now I've got to choose a plan, but I have no idea which plan to choose. [more inside]
We need to pick ACA insurance in NYC and after some research are most likely going with the Gold Health Republic PrimarySelect plan (which uses MagnaCare's network.) Is there a very good reason to not go with Health Republic or PrimarySelect, considering what the other NY options are? We're not eligible for PrimarySelect EPO or else we would have gone with that. thanks so much.
Hi all! Thank you for your time. I enrolled in a private insurance plan through a different state because my state (Oregon) messed up my medicaid enrollment and are still struggling to enroll me. I have two questions: 1. Can I have medicaid as a second insurance or primary insurance and also be on a private one? (I qualify for medicaid) 2. Is there anything I can do to speed up Cover Oregon's enrollment of me? My doctor suggested emailing the news, and I did that, but with no luck. Thanks!
It has recently come to our attention that our mother is hiding—what seem to be very serious—health issues from us. We want to help her, but we're unsure how to proceed. I am seeking advice on two fronts: (1) help us navigate the current healthcare bureaucracy, and (2) help us care for someone who is probably going to try to refuse our help. All of the details inside. [more inside]
Where can I find affordable health insurance? I'm on COBRA since striking it out on my own, but currently have not started making revenue, and am worried about options once that runs out. My current high deductible plan from UHC costs ~$213/mo ($2700 deductible) and includes EyeMed vision and dental (additional $35). I know I won't find anything this good post-COBRA but hoping there's something close? I know that since ACA has started that individuals can buy insurance off exchanges (I am in NYC, so will be more expensive, I know..). Will definitely be checking that out. Freelancer's Medical has come up in my searches. I don't think that entrepreneurs (who are not freelancers getting 1099s) qualify for Freelancer's, but checking with them. Not sure we qualify for HealthyNY for small business (individual option has been terminated post-ACA), since we are an LLC but I am the only full-time partner (the rest have day jobs). Are there other options I'm not aware of? Thanks for any help!
Hello! After getting laid-off from a job and having a job to look forward to in June, I have decided to spend the next 6 months traveling, WWOOF-ing around the US and overseas, living off of my savings and picking up odd jobs. In terms of health care, and the marketplace, what health insurance plans cover multiple states for things other than emergencies (i.e. mental health, a foot fracture, etc)? Would a PPO do that or an HMO? I've spent a ton of time talking to the Maryland Health Exchange people, and after being told something different by each person I spoke to, I wanted to ask you all. Thank you kindly!
I would love the knowledge and insights of Mefites on this decision and on my top three contenders for insurance companies and their networks: Oscar, Health Republic, and Metroplus. [more inside]

What is the logic behind the financial penalties that individuals in the U.S. could face if they don't purchase health insurance?
I will need new health insurance as my insurance company is dropping individual policyholders in my state ahead of the new Affordable Care Act. I do not qualify for any subsidies under the new law and have no reason to think that will change. A friend suggested that I avoid buying insurance through our state exchange and buy straight from an insurance company to keep the IRS and government out of my health business. Is this a valid argument?
Under the new Affordable Health Care Act (Obamacare), can a small employer (under 25 FTE) choose who is eligible for a group plan based on merit or as an incentive? Basically, not have a set guideline as to who is eligible and who isn't?
