Within the last few years, I've increasingly had to fight off my own tendency to break things down into nearly infinitesimal parts in order to get anything done. For example: I'll decide to have friends over for dinner. I'll invite them. I'll begin to peruse cookbooks, see recipes I like -- how will the side dish go with the entree? Is there a better place in town to get the chicken as opposed to the asparagus? And the music -- it would be nice to have a good jazz soundtrack going -- Sketches of Spain -- no, no! -- Johnny Mandel's score for "The Sandpiper"! Which I have on vinyl. Somewhere... the next thing you know, I've been out in the garage for 45 minutes, trying to dig up my copy. [more inside]

My obsessive-compulsive disorder isn't disrupting my day-to-day living, but it's annoying as hell. Good news is that I feel like I'm on the verge of being able to make myself stop giving in to the compulsive urges -- should I give it a try? Has anyone else out there with OCD tried to take the leap and just "quit"? [more inside]

I can't bear to sit with both my feet on the floor for long. I either end up sitting cross-legged, or with one or both feet tucked up underneath me in some half-baked lotus position, or getting a box or something to rest them on. What's going on? Is it likely a circulation thing, or a psychological disorder? Anyone else have this?

I'm obsessed with quantifying things and ranking things. While it doesn't seem to have any negative effects on my life, I do think about it constantly. Am I obsessive-compulsive? Should I talk to a psychatrist? I was afraid to talk about it for most of my life (referring to it as my "research project"), but now I'm starting to open up about it, and it's making me consider how it could be affecting my personality. A very bright acquaintance of mine, personable, well adjusted, loving dad, relaxes by watching the same short scenes from a favorite movie (LOTR, Matrix, etc.). He'll watch the same scene every night for months. He says that when the line is delivered, he feels complete and can go to bed. Is this common? Does this behavior have a name?
