Stand-alone fantasy book recommendations? [more inside]

What is the name of the book I read in 5th grade (as part of the curriculum) about a boy who finds a magic traveling alleyway in his neighborhood and meets the inhabitants, including an old "bag lady" who sews sweaters from bits of trashed yarn and an adolescent girl who ... wears roller skates, maybe? To clarify, these people live in houses that are inside the alley, and the alley itself (or the entrance to it, at least) moves every so often. I've been wondering about this book for years and can't seem to find reference to it. Thanks! (Bonus questions inside) [more inside]

About six years ago, a friend lent me a fantasy book, I'm trying to figure out what it was called. The main character was raised (and possibly summoned) by a wizard deep in the forest, near the beginning of the book the wizard's power starts to flag and the young boy has to leave. He ends up in a castle and when he hears certain words it triggers memories from his past life.

For nostalgia's sake, I'm trying to recall the title of a British novel (or maybe it was a series of novels, I'm not sure) about a family of animated rag dolls who live anonymous lives until a human discovers their secret and falls in love with one of them (?) Yeah, it's a bizarre concept, but I remember it being kind of poignant in an Edward Scissorhands-esque way. Since I read the book as a kid, I suppose it would have been published about 15 years ago, give or take.

My brother's birthday is coming up and he has worn his copy of WeaveWorld by Clive Barker into pieces from constant re-reading. I want to buy him some similar books, could you recommend some similar books he might like? [more inside]
