We need a sanity check on this trip, please! My partner and I are planning on getting out of South Carolina by this summer. We know we'd like to live further north, but there are five places we're considering and we're trying to plan the most economical yet useful trip to help us decide. So: what is the cheapest way to visit Pittsburgh, PA, Syracuse, NY, Burlington, VT, Portland, ME, and Providence, RI in a week?

Does anyone have any recommendations for fall car-camping spots on a lake in the mid-Atlantic/northeast region? Bonus points for dark sky areas.

Where can I camp for several weeks at a time in the northeastern U.S. (in and around NY state)? I wanting a quiet spot that is set up to handle longterm campers? Also wondering whether there is a good guide to US campsites (ratings, etc.)?

How do I insulate my crawlspace? I'm thinking about next winter, now that I've barely survived this past one in the US Northeast. My house doesn't have a basement: it's built on concrete piers with a 1-2.5 foot crawlspace between the ground and the first floor. What would be the best way to insulate in this situation?

Accidental Tourist: It looks like I have 8 days between planes in Shenyang, China in September. Will Beijing still have the cleanest skies it will ever have during my lifetime? Should I instead take the opportunity to see Harbin/Dalian/Dandong/the far NE? Is there somewhere I've forgotten? And how can I get out of Shenyang quick-like?

I have decided to spend my (non-hypothetical) vacation backpacking alone for the week, in the mid-atlantic or northeastern US. However, I am not sure where is best for me to do this, as I have a number of minor concerns and have not done extended backpack travel on a schedule like this -- at least not as a civilian.
Specific concerns follow, and overlap somewhat, so apologies for that.

Friday travel: My usual drive from Shepherdstown, WVa to Cambridge, MA is I-81 to I-84 to the Pike. I have made this in 8 hours (with few stops). This time, I am going from Dulles, VA to Cambridge. What's the better route?

What would be the coolest, weirdest, quirkiest places to visit in the northeast/mid-Atlantic? Could be towns, museums, roadside attractions, etc... bonuses for areas that might take more than an hour or two to absorb. Thanks.
