In the most recent election thread over on Metafilter blue, a discussion about the British comedy Detectorists and its effect as a balm to us election-weary folks has been at a gentle simmer. I am one more episode from the end (again), and am looking for a new show to watch with my mom that has a similar kind and calming feel. It need not be British (though aren't they just the best at this?), but something available on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime is ideal. [more inside]
Traveling along the Côte d'Azur and the Ligurian Sea in the next few weeks. Need to optimize our travel between the towns on our itinerary but searching is giving me incomplete information. Can you walk me through it, step by step? [more inside]
Do you know of a "lifetime" subscription or membership or purchase that you recommend or that seems interesting or a good deal? (An opportunity to pay once and reap ongoing benefits/dividends indefinitely.) In this modern era of low job security, I think I'd like knowing I'll always have a few Nice Things (or simply just reliable things) regardless of what financial turbulence the future may bring, so I'm curious what might be out there along those lines. In late May, I will spend a week with my family in Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice) and then I'm going by myself to the Loire Valley to gawk at castles. Where should I stop for a day or two in between: Nice, Marseille, Lyon? [more inside]
People constantly say I am 'cute' and I am tired of hearing it. I really admire people who have that spark and aren't afraid of voicing their opinion but not sure how to become more like that. [more inside]
"Nice catch!" you'll think, realizing that I deserve kudos for noticing that this question is hard to find an answer to. But where does the phrase "nice catch" come from? Why is noticing and identifying a thing a "catch"? When was this first used and whence did it come?
I feel very unsettled when I have unresolved conflict with people, or if people don't like me (even if I don't particularly like them). Were you once like me and managed to cope better? How? [more inside]

Can the hive mind confirm that men need a dark side to seduce women ? I’m a nice guy and I’ve not been lucky in love. Have I not been lucky in love because I’m a nice guy ? [more inside]
I am too nice and selfless. How do I become less nice and/or meaner? [more inside]
Mr. Rogers, Dolly Parton, Keanu: Who else out there is considered to be genuinely good human being, in addition to being well known?
I'd like to broaden my ESL songbook, and give kids things to sing that would appeal to them. [more inside]
Steve Jobs was legendary for being a badass in the name of seeking excellence from those who worked for him and to make Apple a success. Many other business leaders seem to have similar personalities. But who are the opposite? What business leaders have a reputation for being unfailingly nice? [more inside]
Where are some awesome jazz bars in London? I am looking for somewhere that has a resident live band... the kind of thing you'd imagine Brad Pitt and George Clooney planning a casino heist in with both of them wearing suit and shirt with no tie. Whilst drinking Scotch. Bonus points if it's a place that has an entrance fee to discourage the riff-raff.

Is there a new meaning for "nice" a 20 year old might use regarding the other person in a relationships that a 48 year-old might not be aware of? [more inside]
I'm new to the region and don't know much about the nightlife here. Can anyone recommend good clubs/bars in or around Cannes and Nice?

Can you guys recommend any resources for learning assertive communication? In my family I learned to avoid conflict at all costs. Therefore, I don't know how to approach "difficult conversations" directly. [more inside]
(Free) WiFi in Nice, France? [more inside]
I have a couple of very specific questions about our upcoming travel to Nice, France. 1. Does the Monoprix located on Avenue Jean Medecin sell groceries? And if so, would it be likely that we can find space in the nearby car park at about 6 pm on a Saturday? (We're coming directly from the States to a rural gite and will need to buy provisions for at least Sunday breakfast.) 2. Does the Monoprix at Place Garibaldi sell groceries and, if it does, is it possible to park nearby? (Both of these stores figure on our planned route out of the city. However, maps only show car parks near the one on Jean Medecin.) 3. Does traffic on Avenue Thiers, where the train station is located, run in both directions or just one way? It's not totally clear from all the maps I have consulted. If it is only one way and to the east, we'll have to greatly revise our itinerary out of town. Thanks muchly.
Going to be spending 4 days in Nice, southern France, beginning of August. Recommendations on things to see & do? [more inside]
I want to stay in the French Riviera for a couple of weeks in August. However, much of the research I'm doing implies that it's horribly overpopulated and overdeveloped. Can you suggest a good town, island, or village in which to stay? [more inside]
I am one of those people who will give you the shirt off their back. Problem is, sometimes it's a little chilly being half-nekkid in this damnable British weather... [more inside]
