The good news is that I've successfully talked my work into sending me to New York City for a couple work-related seminars in less than two weeks. The terrifying news is that now I actually have to do this thing. I have never been to New York City (I've never spent any significant time in a city larger than Seattle), can get anxious riding public transit in unfamiliar places, and am looking for help/recommendations. Myself and the missus are going to NYC for an anniversary weekend, arriving late Saturday and departing early evening on Tuesday. I want to make sure we have an amazing time. (Of course!) What should we do? Our likes include photography and and visual art generally, theater (but not musicals usually), classical music (especially newer stuff but old classics, too), vegetarian food, queer stuff, and museums. I usually cut my own hair because I have huge Issues about haircuts and hair places. But I need to get a more professional looking haircut. Can you recommend a queer-centric place in either New York City or New Jersey? [more inside]
I live in an NYC rent stabilized apartment and I filed an HP Action against my slumlord because he shut our water off without notice for a day. I am also claiming harassment and retaliation. He turned it back on after I contacted a tenant's rights organizer. Court is in a few days and I want to win a rent abatement. No legal aid places in NYC are doing HP actions (I exhausted all options). I am terrified. What do I say before a judge to get a rent abatement? [more inside]
Please recommend to me your favorite *kosher* delis in New York City. I'm specifically looking for restaurants that are certified as kosher and serve classics like pastrami and corned beef (like Second Ave. Deli and Pastrami Queen), not those that call themselves "kosher-style" or just "Jewish" delis (such as Katz's). Anywhere in the five boroughs is great. Thanks!
Finished reading A Brief History of Seven Killings the other day. Great book, but I've been bothered by a theory I'd been developing about one particular storyline. It's left unresolved and none of the reviews I've read have honed in on it, which, well, probably says that I'm overthinking it, but I have to ask. Details (and Spoilers!) below. [more inside]
I would like to carry food giftcards with me to handout to the homeless during my daily commute, what type would provide the most bang for the buck? [more inside]
Looking for suggestions for a neighborhood to live in. I'm leaning toward something in Manhattan, but may consider Brooklyn. [more inside]
On November 5th 2008 and November 7th 2012 here in London England, I tried to collect as many British newspapers as I could that featured Barack Hussein Obama II's historic election to the presidency of the United States. The whole world was united in pride for the US on both of those days. Now that he's moving out of the White House, I feel like it's time to give them away; the question is, who gets them? [Preferably to someone in New York City. Sorry Duluth.] [more inside]
During the warm months, every other weekend, people put on a block party type thing on my street. Most aspects of of the event are benign and fun. But: about 3-4 DJs set up along the street, which is not very long and spend the next 10 hours competing with each other. It makes my apartment uninhabitable for that time period, even with all the windows closed. My wife and I have to shout at each other to communicate, etc. I'd like to know how to contact the board/committee/official who approves these permits and make a complaint about the noise. I have a wooden window seat/radiator cabinet cover that's aged and warped. It measures approximately 88 inches wide by 25 inches deep with a hinge in the middle. Pictures here. Does anyone have suggestions on cabinetry companies I could contact and an idea of how much it would cost? [more inside]
My daughter and I recently discovered Hamilton (yes, I know, we're way behind the curve). I'd like to take a short (~3 day) trip to NYC, see some sights, and maybe see the play. Tickets are still quite expensive, and I know a significant portion of the original cast has moved on. Does it still make sense to shell out the big bucks to see Hamilton on Broadway? Or did we miss the moment for it? [more inside]
My sister-in-law, originally from Europe, is a visiting student in NYC this Fall. For her upcoming birthday, I thought a cultural membership or NYC experience would be fun. Maybe something her student budget would not ordinarily be spent towards. Based on this question and other threads, I thought membership to MoMa, Whitney, or New Museum may be options. The only issue is that she is only here from now till December 2016 and the memberships are for 1 year. Or maybe a trapeze class. [more inside]
I really like German mid-century art pottery -- think Scheurich, Ruscha, etc. And there's lots of it available at decent prices . . . in Europe. Where I live, it seems to be limited to a few expensive specimen pieces in mid-century furniture stores. But I'll be visiting New York City soon, and they have all the shopping in the world there, right? Where should I go for a good selection in the sub-$50 range? [more inside]
I've got a quick business trip to New York planned for next week, and I'm looking for somewhere for dinner Sunday and Monday night. NYC Foodies, what's good near 29th and Broadway? [more inside]
We've lived in NYC for several years now, and for our first apartment we had to use a broker. Now we'd like to go No-Fee (obvs.) and have 2 months to find a place. We're using Streeteasy, but I know there are a lot of luxury buildings or property managers that have openings that never show up on those sites, and I'd like to find those! [more inside]
I love dancing to 80s (and 90s) music, but with Culture Club now closed, I'm not sure where to go in New York City. Are there any new dance places that are devoted to 80s/90s music, or that have "80s nights"? Thanks!
My best friend's birthday is at the end of this month. We are going to see Adele in concert next month in NYC. I wanted to get her either Adele or concert related gift to begin the excitement. She is early 30's and her interests include all things pink, concerts and Broadway shows, 90's music and boybands, makeup. Dislikes include trying new foods, sports, driving.

My son is attending a "theater camp" in NYC in 2 weeks. He's staying with the group, we were planning to do touristy stuff during the week. We had booked an Airbnb a couple weeks ago in West Orange NJ. This morning it cancelled on us. This was an awesome place that had a pool and other amenities that my wife was looking forward to help keep our other children busy during the days that I would also be working in Manhattan. Needless to say we're pretty disappointed. [more inside]

I'm taking a four day trip to NYC over Memorial Day weekend (solo). I have plans on Sunday evening but other than that, my time is completely unaccounted for. And aside from a few non-specific ideas, I'm overwhelmed by choices. [more inside]
I was taking a walk and found that somebody had left four bags of women's clothing on the curb labeled "FREE CLOTHES" alongside a futon also presumably free. The road is kind of off to the side, and doesn't get that much foot traffic by nyc standards. I want to report this find in a way, to make it more likely that it will go to somebody who could make use of it. Is this a good idea? If it is, what would be a good way to do so? Have considered craigslist, FB neighborhood post, freecycle forum(?). [more inside]
Looking for recommendations for places to get waxed in NYC (Manhattan preferred). I have tried Bliss and Uni K; looking for other suggestions. Thanks!

I'm interested in comedy shows in NYC that take place outside the big mainstream venues like Caroline's or Gotham Comedy Club. For lack of a better term, you might call what I'm looking for "underground" comedy shows, but I'm not construing that term narrowly. Just really looking to get away from the more touristy spots that seem to often feature bland acts. Edgier/off-beat stuff welcome. Thanks for your ideas!
Wondering if the Hivemind has any recommendations for a CPA that has experience working with freelancers in the NYC area. I used to freelance and now have a 9-5, and I need some help dealing with the transition.
I don't need to actual celebrate/acknowledge New Year's Eve/Day in NYC, but I will happen to be in the city for the holiday and am looking for calm, interesting possibilities that don't involve locking yourself into an apartment against the hordes (the entire time). Looking for your suggestions on how to spend a few days in NYC over the holiday that don't necessarily involve celebrating the holiday (but do avoid crowd crush to the greatest extent possible.) I'm planning to go to the Storm King Art Center (in New Windsor, NY) on Friday. I'd like to eat something delicious for lunch while I'm there or before I go. I can bring it from Manhattan (or anyplace in the city, I guess), but I would have to buy it the day before on Thanksgiving. Or, I could eat near the museum or near my hotel in Monroe. [more inside]

We need your last-minute NYC kid-entertainment advice! My BF and I are having the nephews stay at our place for the weekend. Unfortunately, one of us told the parents that the Saturday-night plans would include The Lion King, which was a bit premature. It seems that tickets are NOT available for any price we want to pay. So it's time for Plan B! But what is Plan B? [more inside]

On a Sunday in September, we have a six hour Amtrak layover (11 am to 5 pm) at Penn Station, with our nine year old son in tow (so, probably 4 and a half usable hours). I know we can get to the top of the Empire State and back pretty easily, is there something else quick and easy we should do during that time?
I recently bought a corset for a friend of mine. She looks killer drop-dead amazing gorgeous in it. We'd like to go out to dinner somewhere in NYC where such attire would be both appreciated and fit in. (She'll probably pair it with pants—nothing fetish-y. I'll do my level best to look sharp, but I can hardly compete.) All suggestions appreciated. Thanks!
