Essentially New Jersey?

In order to block out a new writing thing. I'm looking for things that are essentially or unquiely New Jersian in flavor or references that would ping a lifelong resident of the state- types of stores and houses, idioms, vacation spots, regional foods, etc. I'm also looking for media that has the right feel of the Garden State that aren't Kevin Smith movies. I've read this AskMe about New Jersey books already and I've seen The Sopranos. What are other examples of "Only in NJ" things? [more inside]

How to find a good balloon twister in Northern New Jersey / New York?

We're looking to a hire a good balloon twister / balloon artist for my kid's birthday party in Northern New Jersey but we can't find a Yelp equivalent for suggestions, and we don't want to pick one randomly from the Google results. Can anyone give us some suggestions? We're pretty close to New York City so someone from there would be fine as well.

Working in Rutherford, NJ. Where should I live? Can I live in NYC?

I'm a single, college-educated, mid-twenties male who will very likely be relocating from the West Coast to the Tri-State area in a few months for a full-time desk job in Rutherford, New Jersey. I'd love to know your recommendations for affordable rooms, apartments, studios, etc. in safe and convenient neighborhoods. [N.B. I grew up in and lived in South Brooklyn for many years, so I'm familiar with the NYC area, but I've never lived in NJ nor ever considered living there in the past.] [more inside]

Property taxes on a new house in New Jersey

Hi, I'm doing my 2014 taxes. I moved to New Jersey on Dec. 13, 2013 (from New York) and during the closing I paid the property tax for December, as well as 3 months of property tax in advance for the first Q of 2014. My question is: one my taxes, do I claim just the December taxes, or can I claim all the money I paid in 2013?

Is Fort Lee, New Jersey, Within the Port District of NY and NJ?

This is essentially a legal question. Is Fort Lee New Jersey within the Port District of New York and New Jersey? The Port District is the area which the two states described the area that the Port Authority would be responsible for controlling on port matters when they set up the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. I want to know if Fort Lee, New Jersey, is within that area. The exact description, which I have no idea how to plot is below. I'm hoping someone can just point me to a document proving it or a map of the Port District with either Fort Lee in or out of the district. Or its so obvious I don't even need to have a map. Will the PATH (NJ->Manhattan) shut down if there's too much snow?

One of my coworkers said that the PATH will shut down if the snow accumulates past the height of the 3rd rail. But the line is underground (except outside where there are wires above head-height handling the charge) - could that actually happen. Has the PATH ever been shut down due to snow accumulation before?

Best backpacking guide... book, website, whatever!

I'm looking to start backpacking/rough camping this year, and I've had a hard time picking a guide. Can you recommend a book (preferred) or a website for this sort of thing? I've done some not-so-rough campground camping before, but it was alway drive-in camping. We'd love to start off with over nighters and work our way up from there. We don't know what type of pack/tent/gear to get at all. Bonus: guides for the tri-state (Philadelphia-New Jersey-Delaware) area camping/packing would be nice, too. Thanks!

How does one start a restaurant in the US with a foreigner?

Long story short: I have a friend here in Japan who runs a ramen shop. His lifelong dream is to move to America and open a ramen shop there, and my wife and I are hoping to help him do this a few years down the road (my wife would basically run the business end of things and perhaps own it on paper, and he'd be in charge of the kitchen end of things). False noise complaints and an eviction threat

My 80-year-old grandparents live in subsidized housing in New Jersey. The neighbor in the apartment next door has been repeatedly making false noise complaints about them, saying that he can't sleep because they play the radio loudly all night (completely untrue). They were even visited by the property manager to tell them to stop. Now they've received a "notice to cease," saying that they'll be evicted if they don't stop. How can we deal with this without a lawyer? More details below. [more inside]

This is New Jersey... there are bound to be tacky Christmas lights.

A friend and I live in Newark and Kearny, NJ, respectively, and go to school in Madison. We're both dating Brits who are captivated by the (relatively mundane) Christmas lights displays we've seen just driving around so far. Where's somewhere nearby we can go where we can show them ridiculously tacky Christmas lights, ideally set to music or something equally ridiculous? I've found mention of a house in Morristown online but was wondering if there was anything else, or any neighborhoods that tend to all go all out.

Comparing Proton Beam Therapy in New Jersey and Boston

A friend of mine has a 15 month old son who was diagnosed with anaplastic ependymoma (brain cancer). He had a complete surgical resection of the tumor, and the next step is proton beam therapy. She has her choice between pursuing therapy at MGH in Boston, or in New Jersey at either Procare in Somerset or Robert Wood in New Brunswick. The New Jersey facilities would be more convenient for her and her family, but if the Boston facility is better, she'll make it work. Can you give me any information about how these three facilities compare in terms of both effectiveness of the therapy and patient experience, particularly with very young pediatric patients?
