Shiprock, New Mexico and climate change.

This past weekend, we drove through Shiprock, New Mexico and I started wondering how much humans have changed the landscape. Pre-Columbus - what was the landscape like? Was there more water and groundcover - or was it always arid and (almost) desolate?

What to see in northwest New Mexico?

I'm going to northwest New Mexico this weekend to drive around for three days. We'll likely use Farmington or Shiprock as our base. Our itinerary is completely open. We'll have a 4x4. Any suggestions for off-the-beaten path, or must-see places to visit?

Los Alamos History

I'm interested in reading about the history of Los Alamos National Lab. Does anybody have any recommendations for memoirs, magazine/newspaper articles, books (documentaries) etc. that are engaging and well written about the lab?

Name that tree species.

What are those stalwart little trees called that somehow grow atop the otherwise barren mesas in northern New Mexico? I just returned from my first visit to that region, driving north from Albuquerque to Farmington. What species of plants/bushes/foliage are growing up there? I'm nobody's dendrologist, nor a botanist, for that matter, so I thought I'd ask.

RoadTrip TipS!

I'm going to Yellowstone in May , traveling from Austin TX via New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming then back through Kansas and Oklhoma. I would really appreciate recomendations for any cool places to stop along the way. Cool museums, cheap flea markets, places to buy cool jewelry, cool parks, places to camp, vegetarian resteraunts etc. And also the best places to stay in Yellowstone as thAT's where we'll be spending most of our time.

Evaluating Home Construction in NM

Evaluating Home Construction: We're considering buying a home in NM, where construction is very different from here in MN. Anyone have any good sources (online or otherwise) to help home buyers evaluate quality of construction in Southwest style homes -- especially stucco homes? We're looking at pueblo/adobe style places.
