Haven't been in NYC for a bunch of years...two female friends (mid 20s) on an overseas trip to the City are wondering if W 139th Street is an alright hood to stay in? I know Manhattan is more or less safe...but is there anything you could say that wouldn't recommend that they stay there?
My favorite podcast has charged me with the responsibility of organizing a meetup in NYC. Does anyone have any suggestions for a coffee place or bar/pub that could accommodate 20 or so people on a Thursday night in downtown Manhattan??? Thanks!!!
Can anyone give me advice (outside of Craigslist) on finding housing options in New York City that run month to month? I've lived in the East Village for two years, but was able to sign a lease. I just finished grad school and don't have a full-time job secured, so signing a new lease is not viable for me right now. I'm looking for something that's under $800 a month, in a safe area, in Manhattan (probably not going to happen at that range), Queens, or Brooklyn, and as easily accessible from the train as possible. Astoria, Jackson Heights, Park Slope, or Long Island City would be ideal.
Location scout filter: What are some great locations in & around NYC for photography? Both photographing models (aka friends) and just general photographing what's there (street/wildlife photography). Funky interior indoor locations especially welcome. Doubly so if they'd actually let me set up some modest gear & spend some time. [more inside]
Mr. Brunette and I are headed to Manhattan this week with our four-month old for a three-day excursion. We've already seen this so we think we've got the car seat/cab thing sussed but we're still seeking tips for making the most of a hot, long weekend. Considering the kid won't remember any of this, we're aiming to do things that we'll enjoy but that also are suitable for carting around the baby and snap and go stroller. We're staying on the Upper West Side and are keen to visit the MoMA, Museum of Natural History and the Guggenheim. Debating the Circle Line cruise and wondering how this is best done (if at all) with long lines, car seat, etc. Also, any tips on vegetarian, baby friendly restaurants? Thanks!

Hi Everyone. I am looking for CURRENT information on how to do New York City on the cheap. I am taking my mother there in the fall of 2010. Specifically a hotel.....Thanks guys!
I'm starting a project wherein I walk each and every block of every street in Manhattan, at least once, over the course of roughly 2-3 months. I want to chronicle this process of walking all of Manhattan in a daily blog, preferably with a daily picture and some text. What do I call this blog? (And should I use tumblr? And anything else to keep in mind?) [more inside]

I'm looking for a store in New York City (Manhattan and Brooklyn, ideally) that sells ethnic and sterling silver jewelry. The store could have clothes, accessories, or art, but it should have a significant amount of jewelry for sale. Can anyone help me out? I'm of course googling on my own, but this is the kind of place you would know when you see it, and I can't walk all the streets of NYC. Thanks for any leads.

I'll be visiting NYC by myself next week. I would like to meet / hang out with other gay guys around my age. I'm looking for a gay bar with a younger (late 20s - early 30s) crowd. I'm slightly shy / self-conscious and prefer a place with a relatively friendly vibe and lack of "attitude". Any suggestions?

What are the New York City "projects"? I often hear the phrase "The Projects" in TV and movies. I understand they are an area of somewhat low-cost housing, and that it tends to be an "unsavory" neighborhood, but not terribly so. My question is, what exactly does it mean for something to be a project. Why are they there, how did they get there, and what does it mean today? Google and Wikipedia have been of little help. NewYorkCityFilter: I'm headed to New York City this weekend, staying midtown. It's somewhat spur of the minute but I was wondering if any MeFites have suggestions of current things to do, places to eat and drink, etc. I love trying new places, eats, visual, audible, sensual stimulations. Anything discussed on Mefi recently? Thanks.
How long does it usually take to adjust to a new place? I moved away from my girlfriend and friends by 3 hours. I know few people (those I met at a church and in workplace)...I am having a rough time of it as i am new in town, new and stressed at job, and just new at about everything it seems. The good news is that my girlfriend and I are getting married but it will be 8 months. SO, how long on average does it take a person to adjust to new changes such as job and city? I appreciate your feedback. My anxiety is much higher than it needs to be.
