Basically Nora Reed's unanswered question in this comment from two years ago: what is the etymology of 'umbers', in the New Mexican idiolect? Will also accept explanations of 'a la v[e|ay]'. At some point I was told it was a not super minced version of something really profane, and I've never been able to work out what.

I have a good, reliable car that costs (in my opinion) too much money. I am not currently making the payments on this car, but I will start doing so soon. I am thinking of selling the car and getting a cheap one - but my mother (who is currently making the payments) adamantly believes that this would be a terrible financial decision. I can't see how she could be right. [more inside]

In March, I had a stroke the week before Winter Quarter finals and it resulted in right hemi weakness. I have made lots of good progress in recovery and continue going to physical therapy, but after a summer of my savings being eaten by medical bills, I am trying to figure out ways to make some money. My circumstances make that difficult. Details within. [more inside]

I met a chap in July, and am now entirely done with dating unless widowed early. I would probably benefit from advice on relationships that go through the usual relationship stages at a rapid pace. With kid in tow. Assume 'don't do that' is not going to happen. [more inside]

I'm about to pull the trigger on a new 2014 compact car. I've done my research and driven almost everything in the segment in the last year as a rental. It's come down to a Mazda 3 i Touring hatchback with the full tech package. Looking for input based on experience. [more inside]
Here's the thing: I am a young adult who for the majority of his life has been intellectualising because he is fascinated by what he learns. However more and more I have been wishing I had a creative outlet, artistic or otherwise. [more inside]
I may be moving to Manchester, NH next year, and a business trip to the city next week will leave me with one afternoon free to scout around residential properties. What neighborhoods should I concentrate on if I'm looking for a one- or two-bedroom apartment (or house)? Having a small yard would be great; accessibility by bicycle to the city center is another plus. $1,200/month would be a comfortable rent. Less would be great, a little more would be possible if the dollar difference yielded significant benefits in other areas.
A little while back I stumbled upon a detective novel (Losers Live Longer) that takes place in 2009 NYC and utilizes actual city streets, restaurants, bars, etc. The writing was pretty average, but the book kept me constantly aware of the protagonist's location (oftentimes cross-streets). The real-world geography of areas I knew well really sucked me into the world and engaged me on another level than the narrative alone. Are there any other good detective or mystery novels that use post-2000s (or, better yet, post-2010) New York accurately? [more inside]
I recently read Finding Ultra by Rich Roll and was interested in make some changes similar to him in that I would like to go vegetarian or possibly Vegan. I purchased a few books, and was wondering how others have done with transitioning to a vegan diet? I'm hoping that eating more healthy will get me out of this rut that I am in. For those of you have gone vegan, did you learn to cook several meals before you made the change, or did you do something different? [more inside]
This past weekend, we drove through Shiprock, New Mexico and I started wondering how much humans have changed the landscape. Pre-Columbus - what was the landscape like? Was there more water and groundcover - or was it always arid and (almost) desolate?
I'm open to all suggestions on this. I started a new job in January, one that requires me to write press releases, take photos, etc. Today, the boss, who is not my biggest fan, announced to our little group that whoever is assigned to take photos will also have to shoot video at the same event, [more inside]
Ok, so...long story short, I am really having a hard time making rent for reasons outside of my control. It's due in a week, and despite exhausting every venue I can think of I can't come up with that money. [more inside]
I was curious as to what others have done to find happiness once they have come to a complete system halt? Without going into too much detail, the last two years have been not very much fun. I finished my degree, but nothing really makes me very happy these days. I keep myself busy with volunteer work and I read a lot, but this has not resulted in any lasting happiness.
My background is touchy feely/health based. I've been developing a business idea that has relevance to the corporate world and could offer this in a training/advisory type capacity. I've been advised to start meeting with representatives of organisations to explain how I could help them. How do I do a good job of this? [more inside]

Upstairs there is one master bedroom and a study area that could not be used for anything else, Plus a robe and a bathroom. Downstairs there are 2 other bedrooms and a good living area etc. My question is, how do u make it work with a new baby? Is it possible to have the baby in tha main br for a few months, Then move the baby downstairs with an intercom, Or is that just stupidity? Is there another way to think about it? Appreciate any advice from those that have faced something similar, As the house is auctioned in 2 weeks.

Just moved to New York City to a clean, small apartment. I've been here a month and in the past few days have found several, small, brown bugs. My first thought, roaches! But these guys are really, really slow and come out in the daylight a lot. I've had roaches before and you can't catch them with your hands, these guys I can just swoop down and snag. [more inside]

Cityson is graduating from a Western NY University. He's done great, and we're all as proud as we can be. About 8 family members are making the overnight trip, and would like to have a nice dinner after traveling on Friday, the evening before the ceremony, which is on Saturday, May 17. We're all staying at the same hotel in Bath, NY and Cityson requested a family restaurant meal rather than splitting up the extended family, as only a graduate and parents may attend the University-sponsored pregraduation dinner. I don't want to leave my own elderly parents and aunt to fend for themselves for dinner, either. The problem is that we've not eaten out at a restaurant nicer than a diner the entire time he's been a student, and have no idea where to go. [more inside]
My landlord just installed an alley gate between my building and another. It was in response to some attempted break-ins from the back of the walkup. The problem is that when the door slams shut, it’s really loud and startling. On a Saturday, it slams shut very loudly around 20 or so times a day (not really an exaggeration). To me being the noise sensitive type, who gets a jolt of adrenalin each time it happens, this is a very bad addition to my already urban environs. [more inside]
Hello, darlings! How are we all today? Growing tall and strong? Good, good. That's what I like to hear. I must now commandeer your brains and I will give them back when I'm done. Years ago, I was out for a drive, and listening to the radio late at night. This would have been at the lower, collegey end of the FM dial. I want to say I was somewhere in Connecticut at the time. Total ballpark here, but I'd guess it was maybe something like 2006. I heard a song that I remember as being fun to listen to, and I wanted to find it again, and I have not been able to do so. Details are within. [more inside]
In January, I got my business successfully running, paid off and closed a bunch of personal credit cards, and began making a decent amount of money. Now I'm in a place to start opening credit cards and rebuilding my credit. Last time I looked (10 years ago), there were ways to open new credit card accounts, and as long as you were responsible about always paying off all of your balances at the end of every month, you could get bunches of free flights and bonuses and things. I recall people who played with new account bonuses as a relatively lucrative game. Is this still a thing? Is it worth the time?
It's the first track on this youtube mix. Shazam and SoundHound come up empty.

I have been trying to figure out artist and title of an 80's New Wave song that I have heard two or three times over the years. Kind of poppy, keyboard heavy with a female vocalist. I believe on of the lyrics is "Knock Me Down Like Bowlin' Pin," but there is always a possibility that I misheard the line. I have been searching google and yahoo and webcrawler, etc. off and on for years trying to figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am interested to read some commentary / discussion / critiques / first-person accounts about social climbing in our current society (preferably U. S. based).
