I need to know if mentioning on an interview that I've just started working a new job is advisable or not. Is it frowned upon to be searching for a new job so quickly, or is it seen as being proactive? Are you supposed to stay on a job you don't think is a good fit just because it's only been a month? These are questions I am wrestling with as I prepare for an interview on Monday. If there are any federal employees or HR folks who can advise on this, I would be so appreciative. [more inside]
The Internet appears to have swallowed an almost ten-year old commercial from the NYTimes about its (then new) Weekender subscription service, which included the famous "Saturdays, the word alone makes me happy" comment. It was parodied here by the 92Y Tribeca (RIP) and was then revised by the NY Times. I am, however, looking for the original ad that ran in 2006 (according to this Time article). Was even able to locate the abridged version of the commercial, but can't find the original. MeFi's can you help me save this from the internet rabbit hole?
I've gotten out of a ten-year plus job that was essentially (if not in reality) a protected workplace and not too difficult and now am going to tackle (have been hired for) a new, higher-up and better paying one (before the first job I was very sick for quite a while and therefore couldn't work at all so missed out on the opportunity to learn about much about the Big Girl/Big Boy details of life in the workplace). Because of this, I feel like I really don't know what I should be doing (besides the work I mean). What is your very best advice for being/appearing professional on the job? I know about not gossiping and being on time.
Hi, everyone. So it's only been my third day of a new job and I had to call in sick. I feel absolutely mortified and really worried about what my manager thinks of me now. I would have still gone if it was just the death-like flu symptoms, but I was also vomiting and I knew I wouldn't have been able to make it there, let alone the rest of the day. On top of that, my wallet was stolen at the doctor's office which had the employee security badge to enter the building inside it, so I'm going to have to ask for a replacement for that as well - in my first week! Talk about bad luck... I called in to let my manager know, and she did say that she would rather not have me come in and spread germs in the office and it was best that I stayed home.Still, I'm very worried about the impression I may have given to her about my reliability. I don't want her to think I'm flaky and not fit for the position. My mind is so fuzzy right now, please help me figure out what I can to assure her that this was a one-time thing and she can be confident that she can trust me to be a reliable employee... Thanks in advance, guys.

I am a professional in NYC, living in Queens. I'm a transplant, but I think I will be here for the next, well, forever. A number of people I know are buying apartments, but a lot of them had help from their parents. I don't have that luxury, but if I wanted to, I could probably afford a place in a good neighborhood (though nothing as trendy as Astoria, for example). Snowflake details follow! [more inside]
I'm not really looking for "how to make new friends" advice, but more of how to cultivate and grow a community of friends - fellow young families in particular. Has anyone had success doing this in a similar situation, and how, exactly, specifically? [more inside]

For a specific project at work, we will require an iPad in the near future (say, next week or two). We are only interested in new merchandise (NOT refurbished or used). I was tasked with exploring the best prices on iPads. We are not constrained to any specific vendors, but obviously need a reputable one. I thought the prices of Apple products were essentially uniform across retailers -- but are there deals to be had on new iPads? If so, how do I find them? [more inside]
I'm looking for my cousin, who would like to come here for 2 months or so and study English. I was hoping to find a program that would put her with a family here (I don't really have the space or lifestyle for it). And of course, I need the program to be reputable and safe :) I imagine this sort of thing HAS to exist. Do you know of one?
I am looking to find out the average # of residents on a block within the 5 boroughs. The hard part is finding out how many blocks are in a square mile. The estimates of how many blocks are in a square mile varies a lot. Do you have any idea of how many people on average live in a city block within the 5 boroughs? Thank you for your help!
I live in New York City and I have a friend coming into town in a few weeks who is going through alcohol recovery. I'm looking for things to do in the city with them that lessen the presence of alcohol in the environment. [more inside]
A month ago I successfully applied and received an offer for an internal role. Initially, everything was good but for the last two weeks neither the new management or director have communicated at all with me. I am supposed to start this upcoming Monday, but with two days to go I haven't heard anything regarding my new project or even where to show up. I have sent several emails to the new manager and still haven’t heard from them. What is your recommended course of action? [more inside]

I'm itching for change and would like to move to preferably in the next year. I'm looking into San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City and Portland. I've moved before and to different states/ cities, but this would be the biggest move ever in my life. I need advice on how to find jobs out of state, finding a place to live, and how to get all my junk across country as well. Is it easier to just save up a bunch and move and find a job when I get settled or should I try to get a job and then use that opportunity to move? Any tips or advice would be appreciated. Apartment hunting in Brooklyn moves a mile a minute and we have a quick decision to make. There's a good apartment in park slope. We love the idea of it but there's one weird thing: there's a "bump" in the ceiling. The ceiling is sort of tiled, and the area under the light fixture buckles down into a ~meter wide contact lens-like shape. It's odd, and the landlord doesn't plan to "fix" it because he says there's no problem. There's no sign of mold or leaking there or anywhere else in the apartment for that matter. Questions: 1) What concerns should we have and 2) should we sign a lease? For those who don't know NY housing hunts, if you don't decide, someone else will and then you're back to square 1, so hoping folks can weigh in with everything we should be thinking about! (and I don't know how to post a picture, but will if someone tells me how!)
Please help me understand if this is a bedbug. [more inside]
My friend is looking to change careers and hopefully move into the nonprofit world. Is a career change possible at her age? What should she be doing? What types of positions should she be looking for? She's in her 50s and has a legal background. She can practice law and formerly worked in legal publishing, but she hasn't worked in law for decades. She's spent the last decade or so as an analyst at a financial company.

I'm headed to NYC for the weekend and would like to spend part of a day relaxing at a spa, with massage, sauna, baths, the works (think Aire Ancient Baths or Russian Baths, for two I've considered). Is it normal for a new dentist to expect one appointment for an exam/x-rays, a separate appointment for a cleaning, and then another follow-up appointment for any work that needs to be done (and I'm fairly sure I need at least one filling, possibly a crown)? Also, is it true that no dentists offer warm rinsing/jet water? (Do you know one that does offer this near Durham, NC?) [more inside]

I'm moving in on Saturday. I've lived in dorms or apartments since leaving for college. It's a brand-new townhouse, built last year, owner has never moved in and we'll be the first renters. What sort of new-house things should I know? Bonus: How do I make sure the local flying dinosaur cockroaches don't move in too? I've always had a trash chute!

Picked this up a few years ago at an abandoned pawn place in New Mexico. Love it dearly (although it does need a polish), but I have no idea where it might be from (definitely American, perhaps government?) or what the design might signify. And, hey, I wear it all the time, so I'd like to know!
