What's new in Berlin since 2005?

Should I switch to my future career now or stay in dissatisfying job?

TL;DR: Current job: The good: relaxing, fancy title, nice perks/benefits, flexibility, easy schedule The bad: boring, frustrating, mundane, not in a field I love, full of micromanagers, no room for growth, no intellectual challenge A different job: The good: a field I think I want to be in, intellectually challenging, meaningful, room for growth The bad: loss of perks/benefits, potential loss of schedule flexibility, not easy, stressful, lots of unknowns Which would you chose? Tips for turning a new apartment into a Home?

My fiancee and I are moving to a new city/apartment this summer. Our current place never really felt like a home; it was a temporary, pre-furnished living situation and we made it work for us for a couple of years. Now that we're moving and buying adult furniture and all that jazz, we want our next place to feel like our Home. So, AskMeFi....How do we do this well? What do you wish you knew when you first moved into your home?

I miss my old life, pre-baby & feel extremely guilty...is this normal?

Nobody can prepare you for motherhood, nobody can even come close to describing the joys, sadness and all other mixes of emotions that come with adding a new life to your family. And nobody really shared the struggles or "not so pretty" side to motherhood, so with my feelings of yearning for my old life I feel so guilty that I haven't embraced this new life with an open heart and arms...are these feelings normal? Do mothers and fathers roles cause resentment, because there is inevitibly more responsiblity on the mothers (by nature to nurture if that makes sense)? How do you maintain a relationship with your SO when life seems to be so seperate now that a baby has arrived? A lot of the fun we had together is now seperate. [more inside]

Settle a debate between me and my wife. She insists EVERY new article of clothing must be washed before wearing. T-Shirts. Underwear. Socks. All washed first. moving to a new city for a "girlfriend"

I met this girl from an online dating site from Peru, and we have been chatting by text and on skype for seven months. Now she has moved to Toronto in Canada for school, but I live in Boston, and we agreed to do a long distance relationship for some time while I look for jobs in Canada or Buffalo, NY (which is close to Toronto). I only know this girl through 7 months of skype and texting, and she came to visit me one weekend recently and we got to hang out, and we had a really good time together. But I am having doubts about moving to a brand new city for someone I hardly know but I am still attracted to her, and as far as I know she has a really nice personality. Would it be worth it to leave everything behind to move to Toronto just to be close to her? The other thing is that I really like Toronto as a city, and I have a close friend who lives there.

Can we even have a dog?

My wife and I are interested in getting a dog. We sort of thought of it as something we'd ease into, especially since we had heard that adoption can take a little bit of time. We stopped by a nearby animal rescue this weekend just to see what was involved, and met a very sweet, gentle 7-year-old pugle. We were very surprised to be told that the rescue does same-day adoption, and we could potentially take her home that day. I balked a little bit because our apartment isn't really set up for a dog, but we're both first time dog owners, so don't really know what that even means. [more inside]

Multiple interviews in one week... How to handle current job?

Hi all! Around 6 months ago, I took on a contracting/freelance (they use the terms interchangeably) position at a large company. Sadly, they have no intention on making the position permanent for any of the contractors in our department; this is in addition to me feeling the company isn't the right fit for me. As a result, I've started applying to other jobs. It's going surprisingly well and I've nailed down two interviews thus far... the problem, you may ask? Protocol for interviewing for a new job when you've just started another

I need to know if mentioning on an interview that I've just started working a new job is advisable or not. Is it frowned upon to be searching for a new job so quickly, or is it seen as being proactive? Are you supposed to stay on a job you don't think is a good fit just because it's only been a month? NY Times Weekender Nostalgia Post

The Internet appears to have swallowed an almost ten-year old commercial from the NYTimes about its (then new) Weekender subscription service, which included the famous "Saturdays, the word alone makes me happy" comment. It was parodied here by the 92Y Tribeca (RIP) and was then revised by the NY Times. I am, however, looking for the original ad that ran in 2006 (according to this Time article). Was even able to locate the abridged version of the commercial, but can't find the original. MeFi's can you help me save this from the internet rabbit hole?

Help me be the consummate professional at work.

I've gotten out of a ten-year plus job that was essentially (if not in reality) a protected workplace and not too difficult and now am going to tackle (have been hired for) a new, higher-up and better paying one (before the first job I was very sick for quite a while and therefore couldn't work at all so missed out on the opportunity to learn about much about the Big Girl/Big Boy details of life in the workplace). Because of this, I feel like I really don't know what I should be doing (besides the work I mean). What is your very best advice for being/appearing professional on the job? I know about not gossiping and being on time.

Took a sick day on my first week of a new job

Hi, everyone. So it's only been my third day of a new job and I had to call in sick. I feel absolutely mortified and really worried about what my manager thinks of me now. I would have still gone if it was just the death-like flu symptoms, but I was also vomiting and I knew I wouldn't have been able to make it there, let alone the rest of the day. On top of that, my wallet was stolen at the doctor's office which had the employee security badge to enter the building inside it, so I'm going to have to ask for a replacement for that as well - in my first week! Talk about bad luck... I called in to let my manager know, and she did say that she would rather not have me come in and spread germs in the office and it was best that I stayed home.Still, I'm very worried about the impression I may have given to her about my reliability. I don't want her to think I'm flaky and not fit for the position. My mind is so fuzzy right now, please help me figure out what I can to assure her that this was a one-time thing and she can be confident that she can trust me to be a reliable employee... Thanks in advance, guys.

Need quick thoughts - apartment hunt crisis!

Apartment hunting in Brooklyn moves a mile a minute and we have a quick decision to make. There's a good apartment in park slope. We love the idea of it but there's one weird thing: there's a "bump" in the ceiling. The ceiling is sort of tiled, and the area under the light fixture buckles down into a ~meter wide contact lens-like shape. It's odd, and the landlord doesn't plan to "fix" it because he says there's no problem. There's no sign of mold or leaking there or anywhere else in the apartment for that matter. Questions: 1) What concerns should we have and 2) should we sign a lease? For those who don't know NY housing hunts, if you don't decide, someone else will and then you're back to square 1, so hoping folks can weigh in with everything we should be thinking about! (and I don't know how to post a picture, but will if someone tells me how!)
