I am trying to set up my router so that I can get at my files on my 3 NAS boxes. These NAS boxes are 1) D-Link DNS323, Infrant ReadyNAS NV+, and a Buffalo TeraStation HD-H2.0TGL/R5. The router is connected to the internet via a home service cable modem so it won't have a static IP and one step is to find the IP address before accessing. I have a router (DLink DGL-4100) which says it can make a IPSec VPN or FTP using a Virtual Server (I think). There would be no other PCs on the network since I would be taking my laptop with me when I access the network. The manuals for the routers talk about FTP serving but if I get a VPN set in my router then I should be able to just browse for whatever I want that way...right? The instructions say it can be done, but how? Please give me step by step instructions the best you can for setting up the router, the NAS boxes and my XP laptop (with suggested software, if necessary) since I have looked all over the internet and can't find anything I can understand. Of course the access should be encrypted and password protected. THANKS GUYS. [more inside]

I need to set up a wireless network at home. Here are my parameters: I have one business computer (the main desktop) that is plugged into the cable modem and has many firewalls and will not be on the wireless network. I want to have a reasonably secure but easy to use wireless router (with good range) that will work for both pc's and mac's hooked up to the cable modem. What is the best router to use and will I run into trouble with the desktop/firewalls? I've set up a network with an airport before and it was very easy. I'm looking for the same experience. thanks!

Routers: This may seem rather silly to some folks, but I need a little help in figuring out what my network problem is. (I tried to google around, but i am not even sure what the term is that I should be searching for) The problem is, I am hosting my own web-server and MySQL DB for development purposes, and I have a domain name that points to it. When I am outside my own network I can hit my URL just fine. But when I inside my network, it always try to go to the routers configuration page. Any ideas as how to make sure the router is forwarding the ports correctly INSIDE my network?

My sister lives in a small town in NH that started offering free wireless access in the center of town. I'd like for her to be able to connect to the internet from her house, which is about .5 miles away from the antenna but with tall buildings (church steeples) in between. She has a desktop, her husband has a Centrino-equipped laptop, and I visit with a 802.11-able laptop. My brother-and-law and I are thinking of building a cantenna or the like and mounting it on the roof . But what do we attach the antenna to? All the routers/"access points" I've looked at so far assume a cable (ethernet) connection as input signal which is then output as wireless or ethernet or both. But we want to both receive and dispense wireless. I know there are "repeaters" that can do this but all the affordable ones I've studied only output using proprietary protocols, not 802.11(g), which would require buying proprietary equipment for all the computers in question. Any inexpensive solutions?

I've got a network in my home - one PC, connected by wire to the router, and one Apple, connected by an Airport card (which I believe is 802.11G). The fastest speed I can get transferring files from one to the other is 2.5MB/s, which seems slow. Am I right, or is this standard?

My laptop can no longer receive the Internet! The internet comes, via DSL, into my DESKTOP pc. The Desktop's DSL modem is hooked up to a LinkSys Wireless-B router, which broadcasts the Internet signal to my laptop. The lights on the LynkSys are blinking as usual. My desktop is receiving the web just fine. My laptop IS showing the little "connected" (two-computers) icon in the system tray, and when I hover over it, it says "Wireless Network Connection... Speed 11.0 Mbps, Signal Strength: Excellent." But when I start of a browser, I can't get to any page. I CAN get to the same pages on my desktop. Help! [more inside]
