Are any computer or IT certifications worth pursing?

I'm in the weird position of being halfway through a psych/programming/IT degree meant to train me as a user interface expert. I'm taking a year off to work. I want to learn more about networks, networking, and network security. I want to learn more about computer security in general, best practices to follow. I want to eventually get a non-glamorous job in tech support or similar to pay the bills until I work my way up. Are any of the current computer/tech/IT certifications worth pursuing? [more inside]

Network drive for windows?

Our small office (Windows 7) had a Western Digital My Book World Edition drive. This drive attached itself to the network so everyone could see it, but mostly it was used for backups of our backups. Now the drive seems to be dying and we're looking at replacing it, but WorldBook edition don't seem to made anymore. Can anyone verify that? And if so, point us to similar type of drive, preferably 2 or more terabytes for a Windows 7 office. Does the MyBook line do anything like this? We already have a server that's managed by our IT department. This other drive is mostly just a secondary backup with storage of a few other video files on it.

My own little two-home wireless ISP

I would like to connect two homes that are about 150m apart in order to share an internet connection. Unless convinced otherwise the cheapest solution is likely a point-to-point wireless link at 2.4ghz (using directional antennas and tomatousb/ddwrt). I have line of sight but there are some trees in the way: is this feasible? Bonus: will cheap 14 dbi panel antennas be good enough with the trees?

Why does my Brother inkjet printer show up as a shared PC on my network?

Brother MFC-J270W. It shows up on my home network as a shared PC called "brother", however:
  1. I can't connect to it
  2. This facility is not mentioned in any documentation I have been able to find

Need help securing/troubleshooting my household WiFi Network

I am incredibly geeky (though I certainly know geeks who are moreso) and somewhat hackerish, been running my household WiFi and Wired network to dozens of devices for several years and everything was fine until my Mom's new housesitter brought a laptop into the network that was profoundly infected with various malware. I THINK the malware issue is still contained to his laptop but household broadband utilization went from 200 - 300 GB per month in January/February to more than 650 GB in March and we're still racking up 10-12 GB per day in April. I need help with what to do without alienating anyone and what I can do to support the housesitter while he also works locally on his computer to remove the malware. Brainstorming, new techniques, anything like that would be helpful. [more inside]

Help: XBox 360 no longer connects to XBL via Apple Airport Extreme

I know there is a ton of links about this online, I checked many, many of them and I have exhausted everything I can think of. Playstations not playing well with NAT?

I'm a network wrangler at a university. I keep reading articles in the consumer press that that the new playstations have issues in a NAT environment. I'm trying find out what's actually going on with it but my google-fu is failing because all my searches are overwhelmed with results containing, say, instructions for how to set up your linksys home router to do the right thing. Which isn't quite as applicable to my enterprise-level Juniper SRX firewalls. Anyone have pointers to a more enterprise-level technical documentation on this? I'd like to have a good idea of what the issues are before I try and put dorms full of PS4-wielding kids on a NAT network. Thanks!

Throttle Application bandwidth by Process, not by port or host

I'm using Bitcasa to back up things, but it doesn't have builtin bandwidth upload throttling. So consequently it sucks up all the bandwidth and the entire houses network comes to a stop. This also happens to make browsing the web impossible. This would be easy to do if Bitcasa used a nonstandard port, but it uses 433 to upload to Amazon's EC. I have other applications that also need full bandwidth to EC (intermittently), so throttling those domains won't work either. What I really need is an application specific throttling App . Help? Best printer for artists in a networked Mac lab?

What would be the best price-conscious inkjet printer (probably at or below $600 though if that's unrealistic, let me know) that can be networked easily to Macs in a school setting for artistic purposes (think high print quailty in color and b/w, low cost ink refills, possibly a high quality scanner as part of it, ideally able to print bleeds or pages larger than 8.5x11")? How to set up a wireless router as an access point via powerline?

How to Prepare for Grad School, out of state, and Hit the Ground Running

I will be moving to Boston for Grad school. I would love a checklist of what I need to do to prepare, A. I guess just the move in general, but most importantly B. I need to make sure that I have enough professional clothes- so I am gonna raid the Loft clearance rack. Other than that, I am looking to find a free online Biostats and Epi course, and looking into/reading up on How to Network- everyone keeps talking about it, and I am a total introvert- so I know I gotta figure that out so I can get a job when I graduate.
