You know those three-wheeled scooter trucks that the NYPD uses? What are they called, where can I buy one and how much do they cost? I've seen several stripped of their livery and apparently in civilian use in Brooklyn. Do they get sold at surplus auctions?

Fire hydrant has been open full blast on my street for at least 9 hours. I've called 311 (NYC's non-emergency hotline) three times over these hours; they transfer me to the relevant department, the DEP, who take the report, but nobody comes. Yes I'm positive I'm reporting the correct intersection, and it's ultra-simple to find. Anybody else I can call or anything else I can do anonymously? [more inside]

For the last couple months I've been giving serious thought to applying to join the NYPD. My motivations are manifold: to do good for the city I love, to have a more interesting career, etc. I'm 33 years old and the maximmum age at appointment is 35, so I have about a year to decide and prepare. I'm asking my fellow MeFites, some of whom know me well in person, others only on line: should I join? If so, what should I do to prepare myself to be a better cop? If not why not?
