Who is the guy being interviewed by Fuse in Washington Square Park last week? I *think* I know, but would like some outside opinions...
I'm sure my Manhattan (West Village) based niece would adore a food tour as a gift, but I'm overwhelmed with the choices and don't know New York very well. She has traveled much of the world and is an adventurous eater as well. Single, thirty-something, is relatively new to NYC. If you have either specific food tours or operators to recommend, I would very much like to hear. Thanks!
Where can I buy a cheap, solid red neck tie in NYC? Preferably in Soho, or anywhere along the west side? [more inside]
Howdy! We're relocating from New York City to London at the end of this year, and of course we're taking our cat Olive with us. What we're having a little bit of a hard time with is figuring out just *how* to bring her, and we're hoping you can help us. [more inside]
I've only been going to art museums, but lately, I've been wanting to explore and go to art galleries. Problem is, it's a bit of uncharted territory, and so I have no idea where to start. [more inside]
Know of any fun activities for the weekend of 11/22-11/24 somewhere around NYC? [more inside]
For a bunch of reasons (some good, some bad) I have the next two and half months totally free. I don't have to do a thing, I have no reason to make any more money and I've got oceans of time, a nest egg of savings, and a gym membership. Previous times like this I've focused on making my skill-set or apartment better/fancier, but now I want to focus on myself. No creative projects, no learning and growing, just pure, unabashed vanity. What can I do in two and half months to get all kinds of pretty? Ideally during the day. [more inside]
I think I'll take my kids (18 yr. old daughter & her boyfriend; 16 yr. old son) down to NYC for just the day this Sunday. Kids have spent almost no time in NYC and not since they were little, so it's pretty much brand new to them. I only get to go about once every 5 years, so I'm not very familiar. Son is video game enthusiast, Minecraft, EDM, young for his age, geeky kid. Daughter likes everything and will be gung-ho no matter what we do. Neither of them is particularly into museums. I myself just like walking along the streets, taking in the sights, people-watching, window shopping. I'm thinking walking around in Central Park, maybe the zoo. Or maybe checking out the highline. But what else should we do with about 5 or 6 hours? Also, we're driving down, using a rental car. What's the best part of town to park in, and what kind of parking situation would be best?
I'm a fresh college graduated from a European academy for Graphic Design and want to move to NYC to gather more experience in the field, and live there for a while. Question about job search and accommodation. Considering doing a masters degree too. [more inside]
I am filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in New York City. Can anyone recommend a low-cost bankruptcy lawyer or other legal resource, since money is (obviously) limited? [more inside]
I'm about to start a job where I make around a 55k salary. I am wondering how much this will affect my life compared to the approximately 40k salary I've been getting (due to things at my job trying to play with my salary... I can't really comment on this.) [more inside]
Help me and my kids plan a fun, low-hassle weekend in New York watching Missus_A run the marathon! [more inside]
In a religious studies course I took eight or nine years ago, the professor mentioned a Jewish congregation in NYC whose services looked almost identical to high-church Anglican services, just with the liturgies changed out. Now that I live in the New York City area (and am dating someone who is Episcopalian-Jewish), I'm quite interested in checking this out, but nothing I can think to search for on Google is turning up the right results. Any MeFi-ites have any idea which congregation this might be?
A friend is looking for a bookkeeper for her very small non-profit: there's one full-timer (her) and four regular contract workers. She wants someone to come in once or twice a month and keep accounts up to date. Office is in Brooklyn. Any recommendations?
Has anyone seen rap snacks chips sold in Manhattan recently? I need to get some for tomorrow and have never seen them in NYC, but maybe I am looking in the wrong places.
I'm trying to move to Brooklyn by December 1st. I have some money saved up, but I'll need to find a part time coffeeshop job (4 days a week) to support myself while I intern the other 2-3 days. Right now I live in Boston and I have no clue how to go about looking for a job from afar. Considering that I may have to go on several interviews before being offered a position, that I currently have a part time job here so I can't be staying in NY for long periods of time while I look, that I have no friends in the city to stay with and that my funds are limited, what should I do? [more inside]
I have been charged with organizing a 2-day meeting in NYC for approximately 23 people, all coming from out of town so I will also need sleeping rooms for about 4 nights. Can you recommend a nice hotel? [more inside]
I have never been to NYC. I'm on business travel next week to NYC (Manhattan financial district to be precise). I won't have a lot of touristy time, but my evenings are free, Monday - Thursday. With that limited time, and a hotel in the financial district, what sort of things would it be dumb for someone to not checkout? [more inside]
We will be travelling to the US from Europe next year, and I'm interested in the Macy's parade. Is it worth timing our trip so we can see it - particularly as hotels seem to be cheaper in November - or is it a bad idea to visit the US during Thanksgiving (and maybe the chaos of Black Friday)? Possibly relevant: neither of us have driving licenses so would be reliant on public transport, and would plan on spending a few days in NYC before travelling on or flying home.
I want to go back to therapy, but the last two people I tried were just terrible, and I am sick of blowing my outrageous copays on people who seem incapable of relating to me. How do I find someone who will actually help me? [more inside]
I run a small Mac support business in NYC. Most of my clients are small businesses, and are repeat customers going back several years. Customer loyalty is high. Expenses are low. Profits are reliable. Physical assets are few. I'd like to sell it, but I can't figure out if it's an asset — or if I'm the asset. [more inside]

Hey all, My partner and I recently decided to get married this May, and as we are both strapped for cash and not into the whole wedding-industrial-complex thing, we've decided to have a small ceremony at the Marriage Bureau with close friends and family on our anniversary (a Wednesday), go out for lunch afterwards, and then have an open house/cake, punch, and appetizer reception at our apartment over the weekend. We'll be moving before May, likely into a fairly small (no larger than 1.5 bedrooms, certainly, as this is NYC) apartment. [more inside]
I need to attach a window screen to my fire escape window. Obviously I'd like it to break away when necessary (and also so I can water my herbs strapped to the bars on the upper half of the window). How can I do this most effectively and with materials I already have? It needs to cover both the top and bottom half of the window, and there's no existing screen frame. [more inside]
We need Event PR. So... where do I start and how do I tell if they're a decent firm? [more inside]
I'm here in NYC and searching for a bakery that I came across on a previous visit while wandering around the city right before a hurricane. I'm pretty sure it was in Midtown or the UWS. What's special about this bakery is that everything they sell was made that day, and what's left over at the end of the day is always donated. Based on that description, can you help me? All my extensive searching has yielded no matches.

I help run an arts organization in NYC, and recently, it was brought to our attention that a person's behavior has made some of our other community members feel unsafe. The person has agreed to stay away from our organization and its events until invited back, and seems genuinely repentant. I'm looking for information about restorative justice - either resources on how it works, what standard practices are, and also (ideally) any organizations in the NYC area that could help us understand and navigate this situation. Please understand I can't provide any more details than this, for obvious reasons of confidentiality.
I live in a rent-stabilized apartment in NYC. Our super lives in another building down the block run by the same company, and is pretty responsive to problems. The work we call him for isn't hanging curtains or changing light bulbs, but rather fixing reasonably-tough problems— stuff like tightening a loose faucet or fixing mild water damage in the shower ceiling from a leak upstairs. When would it be expected to tip? After repairs, or a gift around the holidays, or what?
Do I need to take my recently-acquired formerly-stray kitten to the vet for a check-up or anything? She had fleas but we washed them off and put a flea collar on her, and they haven't returned. Other than that she seems in good health, and I'm wondering if there's any reason to take her to a vet or not. (I can get her spayed and vaccinated for really cheap, but, a vet visit costs a lot more...)

Seeking suggestions for good stores in NYC to buy high-quality kitchen knives where you can test them out before purchasing. Even if they don't let you actually cut or chop anything, are there places that at least let you hold the knives in your hand, to get a sense of the grip/feel/weight, etc.? Thanks!
I'm looking for an Oct. 1st roommate share in Brooklyn, and so far I'm coming across shockingly few places listed on Craigslist. Is there another list I'm not aware of? I already put word out to my network. Details: -- I've lived in BK for six years (Crown Heights + Park Slope), and have never had trouble finding a place before. --Budget is $1100 and under. --Looking to stay for 6 months or longer --I'm searching under "rooms & shares" AND "sublets & temporary" Thanks!!
Hope me Metafilter! I have a service I am trying to market to freelancers (of the mostly digital kind -- designers, photographers, etc) in NYC. I am on a shoestring budget. How do I get my message out in front of them? Where are freelancers hanging out in this city? I'm open to any and all suggestions about reaching freelancers in NYC. Thanks!
We hit the Met and the Society of Illustrators Museum the last time we were in this fair city and loved them; can the hivemind suggest events or other semi-touristy things to see that will be going on between the 13th-15th of October for a couple to do? We enjoyed the EMP Museum in Seattle, and the Huntington Gardens in LA; we're occasional swing dancers and fire spinners, so we might like something dance or circus-oriented, and I'm up for most classical/representative art museums or nice areas to amble outside.
I am looking to travel to from NYC to Princeton on a Thursday - early afternoon. I am trying to decide between the two options. Both are priced about the same, and the slight time difference in trips does not matter much to me, as I will not be pressed for time. Both Penn Station and Port Authority are about equally easy for me to get to. I will carry one suitcase and a backpack. Has anyone had experience taking either a bus (e.g., Suburban Transit) or the NJ Transit train to Princeton Junction and transferring to the Dinky? Is one option much better than the other? I suppose my criteria for "better" include: more pleasant, easier to navigate the stations/terminals, and with a drop off closer to campus. Thanks!
