My wife hates her sun spots and wants an IPL Photo Facial. I've decided I am OK with her dishing out big bucks for the treatment, but I don't want her to go through several treatments that don't work. We are flying to NYC in a couple of weeks and she wants to go to Tribeca Med Spa. [more inside]
I want to buy four or five interesting posters to fill up my blank walls in my new place and make it feel like 'mine'. I'd prefer to pick them out in person, rather than buying online. I'm especially interested in 20th century art (particularly abstract or semi-abstract), nature or urban photography, vintage maps and prints, and almost anything art deco or art nouveau. I'm also open to serendipitous discoveries that don't fit any of the above. Is there a place in New York that stocks a wide breadth of such things? [more inside]
Where can I buy Astra Beer in NYC? I'm sure it's available somewhere, but basic Googling hasn't turned up a specific store that has it. Before I start to make the rounds of all the beer stores in the area, I'd welcome suggestions of specific stores that are known to have it. Danke!
I'd like to take more weekend trips outside of NYC. I don't drive. Where should I go, and how should I get there? [more inside]
My daughter was fortunate enough to get a job in Manhattan right after graduation. Now she's looking for an apartment for 9/15 or 10/1 and is feeling overwhelmed because she's not familiar at all with the area. Help! [more inside]
We're doing a pre-war renovation in Jackson Heights, Queens, NYC where our co-op requires we have a plumber replace the branch piping, new valves and shower pan for both the bathroom and the branch piping/valves in the kitchen. Questions: i) Is the below cost estimate reasonable. ii) Any recommendations of pre-war savvy licensed/insured plumbers in Queens or North Brooklyn? [more inside]
Hey Internet. I'm lonely and bored. I graduated from college in May and haven't had any luck finding paid work or even volunteer work so far. Can you recommend some free/cheap places I can hang out in NYC with my laptop? Or free events/activities during the day? If there's any place that will let me walk in and volunteer, that would be great, too. [more inside]
Should I go with Optimum/Cablevision or Verizon FiOS internet in Brooklyn? [more inside]
I'm looking to play tennis casually and recreationally in the Queens/Brooklyn/Manhattan area. But the costs and inconveniences are real deterrents. If I understand, I need to pay the annual membership, THEN a per-diem fee, and all of that AFTER finding a court that has availability. Is there a better way? (My friends in the suburbs drive to a local park, walk over to a free court and... play.)
So I need to burn off a sick day tomorrow. I was planning on going to the beach but alas, the forecast calls for rain. What's something else fun that I could do in Manhattan and/or Brooklyn? [more inside]

Is there somewhere in NYC (preferably Brooklyn) that has quality furniture with prices on par with the internet? We need to buy a bed, living room seating and a dining room set. The answer to this question is not Ikea. [more inside]
Anyone in NYC (maybe elsewhere, too) with Pre-War apartments might recognize the hoop-style shower curtain rod, the 4 tub faucets, and the centered shower head that I have just moved into. What I'd like to do is connect a hand-held shower head to this shower and clamp it to the curtain rod, turning my shower to the usual length-wise orientation. Any ideas on how to do this?
My sister is getting married in New York City in January. Since she and her soon-to-be-husband live in a bitsy studio in Midtown, my husband and I don't want to buy them any "stuff" as a wedding gift. Instead of dishes/towels/silverware, I'd like for us to treat them to dinner at an amazingly fancy place that none of us would ever dream of spending that much money on normally. The kind of epic dinner that you can talk about for the next 20 years. [more inside]

I'm looking to rent a new apartment in NYC. For our 3 previous NYC apartments, we’ve filled out an application and paid an application fee and then once our application was approved, paid security deposit / first month’s rent at lease signing. The management company for the apartment that we are looking to rent is requesting the following: we fill out an application, pay an application fee and give them a security deposit equal to one month’s rent. If our credit is approved, then the security deposit is non-refundable and we basically have to sign a lease. Is this legal? [more inside]
My partner and I just moved into a new apartment in Queens. There's one small issue, and it's our peephole. It's missing the cover on the inside. Where can I get a replacement? [more inside]
Where can I get plain (par-cooked) ramen noodles in NYC? I'm talking about frozen/refrigerated, not dried. I work in Midtown, so I'm near some Japanese groceries, but all I've seen are frozen packages that include soup- is there a better option than buying those and throwing out the broth? Also, are there particular brands to look out for?
Recently there is this family brings their super noisy kids(about 5-6) to run and scream on the street infront of my apartment everyday from 6pm-10pm. The street is in a quite neighborhood, there are families, but I never hear or saw a single kids making such noise outside of there home on the street. One day I went down and talked to the parent and kids, that they shouldn't make noise like this, but they didn't listen and was quite rude, both the parent and the unruling kids. I really can't take this, it's extremly noisy, the screaming can't be stopped by closing my windows and putting on earplugs, not to mention it's hot summer that I need a little bit of breeze and peace in the evening at home. What Can I do? this is in NYC, is there any code for noisy street kids? thanks!
I haven't been to a doctor in a few years, and I don't have insurance now and won't have it for 8 months or longer. I was wondering how much would it cost to go to a doctor with no insurance and what choices do I have in the NYC area? [more inside]
So, I'm moving to New York, and the housing situation looks really complicated. I have a friend I can crash with for a week or two, but I would ideally like to find a place soon after I arrive in the city in early August. I recently gave notice at my job, after having received Metrocards in advance. Lots of home movies, some are super-8, some are tapes, some are mini-DV tapes, etc. I'd like to get them put on DVDs that I can then easily edit. I'm in Manhattan, NYC. thanks (oh a long time ago there was another question like this and somebody suggested a mail-order place, but I don't feel comfortable sending off my precious home movies from the 1950s etc. away)

The door to the roof of my new NYC apartment beckons to me with dreams of sunset glasses of wine and weekend lunch picnics, but am I inviting trouble? Does "unofficial rooftop access" exist? I know people in the city hang out on their roofs all the time, but exactly how kosher is this? And what is the limit? Do landlords on average just turn a blind eye? Details inside. [more inside]
Usually I get together with someone and we go to the nyc piers to watch the fireworks, but since this year the 4th lands on a Friday we can't do that as my friend celebrates the sabbath. I figured I could just go the Meetup.com route, but looking at the site today there doesn't seem to be much going on that isn't already full. (I guess I shouldn't have left it to the last minute) If anyone happens to have any suggestions as to what I could do tomorrow I'm all ears.
I'm helping my friend's Maid of Honor plan the bachelorette party. Due to a miscommunication, I thought we would be a party of 6 for dinner. Nope. It's between 12 - 15 people. I need to rethink. [more inside]

So, my boyfriend of six months and I are heading to NYC tonight and staying 'til Sunday. I have a up against a wall with an approaching work deadline and because of my own poor planning will need to do a little bit of chipping-away-at-it while we're there. I need to carve out three or four 3/4-hour (ish) focused working sessions during our trip, and I wanted to ask the hive mind if anyone familiar with the city could suggest any non-awful ways to handle this. I'd like to compile a list of businesses in New York City—starting with Manhattan—that have been around for 100 years or more. I'd also like to include places the public can visit that aren't "businesses" per se. I'm guessing this information is publicly available, but I don't know where to start. Any guidance would be extremely helpful. Thanks!
A couple of middle-manager-ish employees perhaps bent the rules a little bit for us and allowed us to transfer a lease to new parties, completely getting us out of the lease. Should I/how do I say thank you? [more inside]
[NYC Filter] I want to take my girlfriend out to a nice dinner. No special occasion being celebrated. I'm thinking New American style. For vibe, think Northern Spy, which she and I loved. She's a vegetarian (I'm not) so I want the place to be veg-friendly. Most places only have a token veggie appetizer and veggie entree. I'd love to find a place that offers her more choices. Bonus points if they take reservations. Any thoughts guys?

My NYC apartment management company is charging tenants for repairs to the roof and outside of the building (the facade). These are not improvements to the units, but to the building. The repairs were finished earlier this year. My apartment is rent stabilized. As I understand it, my next rent invoice will show an extra payment due for these repairs -- although I do not know what the fee will be yet. Before I call 311 and complain, is it legal to charge tenants for building improvements? Thanks in advance!
I am moving to NYC for work (yay!) and need to find an apartment. My start date in my new position is between 8/15 and 9/1, depending on when I can get into a place. Because I'm moving from a low-income area to a high-income one, my salary is basically doubling, which is fantastic, but not until 8/1. I'm trying to figure out a way to get around paying broker fees because my cash flow is not going to be great until the raise kicks in. [more inside]
I have a dog, and the vet I take him to is okay. She's nice, I'm sure she's competent, but she's not the best communicator, and for some reason I don't have absolute confidence in her. My dog has a heart issue, and I'm going to want a really good vet as he gets older. Any recommendations? I'm in Park Slope, but would go elsewhere for someone great.
Can anyone suggest a relatively quiet place to study(must have power socket and wifi) without loud music and not too cold? In NYC, Brooklyn or Manhattan. Preferrably can stay for long hours. NYU library is too cold due to AC temp too low. I already wear long pant and fleece jacket, just cant sit still without chills. Thanks.
Hello, everyone, I'm looking for non-American films that were filmed in NYC. I don't mean films that just take place in NYc but are filmed elsewhere (a la The ninth Gate) but films that were actually filmed in the city. They don't have to be in English, in fact it might be preferable if they weren't.
Is there a scam I'm not aware of, or any reason why I shouldn't tell this person my birthday? I can't think of why I shouldn't, but it just seems a little strange. I would ask them why they want the info, but don't want to come across as strange, in case this is a normal thing. [more inside]
My grandmother is 89, and only retired in the last year. Since she's retired, she hasn't been doing much, and I'm worried about how she'll do over the next few years if she doesn't stay busy. I'd like to make a list of things she could be doing in NYC, where she lives, to stay active. She has some very specific needs and interests, though, and can be a bit ornery, so I'm hoping you can help me work within her limitations. [more inside]
