This is a question about NYC real estate, specifically about a building maintenance issue. After many years of renting, I am in the market for a co-op apartment in the five boroughs of NYC. There is a problem with my current building that I am willing to tolerate as a tenant that would be a complete deal-breaker as an owner The issue is this: [more inside]
I'm a single, college-educated, mid-twenties male who will very likely be relocating from the West Coast to the Tri-State area in a few months for a full-time desk job in Rutherford, New Jersey. I'd love to know your recommendations for affordable rooms, apartments, studios, etc. in safe and convenient neighborhoods. [N.B. I grew up in and lived in South Brooklyn for many years, so I'm familiar with the NYC area, but I've never lived in NJ nor ever considered living there in the past.] [more inside]
We're going out in the Kips Bay neighborhood soon with friends. Can you recommend a good restaurant for a festive meal that is NOT Indian? As close to 29th and 2nd as possible. [more inside]
I'm looking for an apt share in NYC within 20 minutes or so to midtown by train. Is craigslist the best place to look? Do you have any general tips on how to do the search, what to avoid? My experience so far is that it can look good on photos but still be very rundown, but no photos/details is likely to be even that much worse.
I currently work in NYC for a large multinational financial services company. I'm in a contract position here, which is due to be renewed in August (which possibly might not be). They've internally offered me a full-time position in Montreal, and I don't know if I should take the offer (which is flat on salary. 110k/yr). I can probably find a similar position in NYC, but it'd be a contract position, and I really like the culture of the company I work for and I guess I'd rather have the job security of a full time position right now... huge snowflake inside. I'm looking for an affordable restaurant that could accommodate a group of 10 on Saturday night for a birthday party. Ideally in a neighborhood in NYC with solid nearby nightlife. [more inside]
After trying Coors Banquet Beer purchased at a grocery store in Colorado, I have a strange and growing craving to drink this supremely yeasty beverage again. However, I'm having trouble locating it (tried Fairway UES and Whole Foods Union Square so far). I checked the Coors website locator, but it gives me locations that sell ALL kinds of Coors, which is not helpful. Have you seen this beer? Help! [more inside]
Apropos of absolutely nothing, I was recently struck with a childhood memory of visiting a store, several times, in NYC called "The Pushcart". I'd like to see if I can find more about it, but that's proving... hard. Help? [more inside]
My husband and I have a rare free weekend coming up. We'd love to go away for that weekend. The problem we are finding is that the conventional recommendations don't work for us! Hoping someone can help us find a stress-free getaway. [more inside]

Looking for a recommendation for a decent psychiatrist or psychopharmacologists in NYC. [more inside]
I was using an online "therapist finder" (Probably Psychology Today but I can't be certain) about 6 weeks ago to find myself a therapist. I had come across one in particular that I thought I saved a link to, but now can't find. I know it was a woman, and she mentioned dogs in her description/bio - both that she was a dog owner and lover, but also that her dog could sometimes be present for therapy, and/or you could bring your dog. I know that's not unheard of, but her description really resonated with me in terms of what I need right now in a therapist and I am hoping someone might recognize my description. Thank you!
We have enjoyed 6+ years of our gas oven/stovetop, but now our NYC landlord is planning to replace all the ovens in our building with electric. This seems like it will make our (already high) electricity bill even higher. Is there anything we can do? [more inside]

I'm 99% sure the symptoms I've been experiencing for years are caused by a chronic H. Pylori infection. My understanding is that eradication is only 70-80% likely to actually work. I'd like to do this right. Can you recommend a doctor in NYC? [more inside]
Does it make sense to drive to Newark Airport and park there for a long weekend in New York? [more inside]
Okay, I'm in NYC and I need a PI related T-Shirt for Pi-Daytomorrow... Anyone know of any stores where I can get one? (It's too late for an online order)
First date in NYC, near grand central and the Bryant park area, weekend afternoon. Likes: animals, theatre, the arts, books. Fun and interactive things would be especially welcome. Suggestions?

Does anyone have a good Sports Medicine doctor in NYC who takes Health Republic and/or Magnacre? Also, can you explain to me how health insurance works in this case? [more inside]
A close family member will be turning 21 next January (toward the end of the month). I'd like to surprise her with a weekend trip to NYC in honor of her birthday. She has never been before and loves to travel, and I think it will make a great memory. Here's the rub: I can't decide whether to 1) go on her actual birthday (pro: we'll be there on her actual birthday and con: January is kinda dreary), 2) celebrate her birthday early and go during the Christmas season (pro: Christmastime in NYC is so special), or 3) celebrate her birthday at home and go when it warms up, possibly late May (pro: it will be nice to stroll the neighborhoods and not shiver). What do you guys think?
I am looking for recommendations for a good psychiatrist in Manhattan. It would be superb if this doctor was in-network for Oxford, but it's not absolutely necessary (and seems very hard to find). [more inside]
My brother's birthday is next Friday, and I am honestly stymied as to what to get him (and cannot get a serious answer out of him.) He is in his early 30's, and just moved into a new apartment that has a cute outdoor space. (Pavement ground) Does anyone have a similar space? He and his girlfriend have already furnished the place, so they don't need essentials. Etsy-friendly suggestions particularly welcome.
I'll be visiting New York next week and I'd like to buy some jeans, but I have no idea where to look! It'll be my first trip to the U.S. and I'm not familiar with American retailers at all. My particular taste and even more particular body type will probably eliminate a lot of options, but I hope you can point out the ones that are left. [more inside]
I'm trying to create a travel book and website for tourists to NYC. Are there any resources I can use for free or very low cost in regards to the street maps in the printed version, especially those including subway and/or bus stops (nice, but not required).
I have some boxes and some furniture. They need to fit in the back of a van. Is there somewhere on the internet where I can tell it the sizes of my things, and the size of the space they need to fit into, and it tells me how to most efficiently stack my things? [more inside]
Can you suggest particular jobs and places to look for jobs? [more inside]
I'd like to go to a beer bar in Manhattan this weekend. I've always liked Zum Schneider but want to try some place different. Prefer a place that's typically not too crowded on a Saturday around 6pm (that seems early enough to avoid crowds, right?); quiet enough to talk; and ideally, which also has good food. Thanks!
I'd like to start on online-base media/information/advice business, and I'm having trouble deciding on where to incorporate. [more inside]
This is essentially a legal question. Is Fort Lee New Jersey within the Port District of New York and New Jersey? The Port District is the area which the two states described the area that the Port Authority would be responsible for controlling on port matters when they set up the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. I want to know if Fort Lee, New Jersey, is within that area. The exact description, which I have no idea how to plot is below. I'm hoping someone can just point me to a document proving it or a map of the Port District with either Fort Lee in or out of the district. Or its so obvious I don't even need to have a map. Coming from London UK. Need to travel light - what must I bring to wear to deal with the cold and snow? I am familiar with winter - but what will I regret not taking if the current weather situation continues across next week?
My girlfriend and I are thinking of re-signing a twelve-month lease, but we know we don't want to stay for the entire lease. How likely will we be able to sublet our Long Island City apartment, just across the river from Manhattan? [more inside]
I need to get to NYC for a wedding rehearsal on Friday. There is going to be an insane snowstorm her tomorrow. Should I try to get an Amtrak for tomorrow morning (cheaper) or try for Friday morning (kind of expensive)? Will snow stop the trains? Should I just try to go tonight (imposing on people)? I already bought a bus ticket for Friday morning a few weeks ago but I'm guessing the roads will not be great between the cities. Is this a wrong assumption?
The lady and I would like go away for a couple of nights this weekend. Preferably to somewhere relaxing. We don't ski, and have little interest in winter sports generally. Where can we go? [more inside]
We need to pick ACA insurance in NYC and after some research are most likely going with the Gold Health Republic PrimarySelect plan (which uses MagnaCare's network.) Is there a very good reason to not go with Health Republic or PrimarySelect, considering what the other NY options are? We're not eligible for PrimarySelect EPO or else we would have gone with that. thanks so much.

I've got a super-pregnant buddy who has been craving ice. Specifically, the "Sonic-style" crunchy ice that's nice to chew. Any leads on where to find such a thing in New York City? She lives in Queens, so it'd be nice to be able to grab a big old bag of it somewhere (so it could survive the subway journey) and surprise her with it.
I'm a single young man currently living in New Jersey. I work downtown (near the Fulton St. A stop) and have a standing appointment in the West Village twice a week that keeps me out until 10:30 and 12:30, respectively. I'd like to move into the city proper to make both of these things easier, but I've only ever lived with family and friends (in Chicago). What would be some good neighborhoods for me to consider? How do I find room-mates? How do I find places to look at? Do I need a broker? More on my budget, desires, and lifestyle inside. [more inside]
How do you find career counseling that's worth your time and money? Or can you recommend specific counselors in New York City? [more inside]

So I really love perfect, cooked, brown roast beef, but most delis only have the half-cooked pink crap. Anyone know of a place in NYC (preferably Queens, but I'll take Brooklyn or Manhattan) where I can get a nice roast beef sandwich with cheese and mustard that won't moo at me?
[NYCFilter] My landlord slipped a memo under the door last night that on Friday afternoon he was changing the front door locks to the building and all tenants had a small window to pick up new keys from him or had to make alternative arrangements. I cannot make the small window (night school), the number he listed is incorrect, and despite a couple voicemails on the other number I have for him he hasn't returned my calls. What are my options on Friday if I cannot get into the apartment? What are my rights? [more inside]
I have a date with my visiting from out of town stepsister this Sunday and she wants to go see some live jazz but nothing too avant guard. Please help me look cool by recommending somewhere we could go. She's a music teacher and plays a couple instruments so unlike me she probably knows good from bad. Nice cocktails would be a plus and ideally not to far out as she's staying at a hotel in Times Square.
Any ideas for a Brooklyn (or Manhattan, I guess) restaurant that can host a wedding of appx 75? Something warm and intimate, like Frankies (too small) or Aurora (hello $20K!). Nothing too **fancy** (as my Aunt Frances says). No venues or spaces or lofts or halls. Just a restaurant :)

I visited my GP for a myriad of symptoms that she suspects is endometriosis. I'm headed to my Lady Doc on Monday, but wasn't terribly concerned. I thought it would be similar to the LEEP I had last year, as in "Zap zap, you're done." I wasn't even bothered—that is until I emailed a friend about her experience with endo. Help me parse what my friend is saying vs. what my GP said I should do? I'm feeling some pressure to move quickly. [more inside]

My company is interested in securing some domains related to our business under the new .nyc top level domain. Some of them will be our companys' names, and others we would like are more general descriptions of our business and are likely to be highly sought after. I've registered for updates on the official site and I'll act right away as soon as I get any updates. What can I do beyond that to better my chances? Anywhere I can "pre-register"? Are there brokers for this sort of thing?
