I would like to move to NYC but have no idea how to actually go about doing so. My main priority is meeting people and making new friends, but I'm also (of course) concerned about finding work and living in an area I like and can afford. [more inside]
Somehow I can't find the information for my dentist that I last saw 4 yrs ago. Can you help me figure out who it was based on these clues? Male dentist, white guy in his 40s with brown hair, practices with his wife (blonde) who is also a dentist. Upper West Side, I want to say in the 70s? They had a small but tech-y office with photos from their travels all over. They were both scuba divers. They were super nice and gave huge swag bags full of toothbrushes and stuff at the end of your appointment. His name might have been Steve?
My (hopefully) soon-to-be wife and I both have really severe social anxiety issues. Unfortunately, we need a witness for our City Hall wedding tomorrow in NYC. What are our options? [more inside]
Planning a trip to Manhattan soon. I'll be staying in the Meatpacking District, and am thinking about taking a long run one day up to the Inwood Hill Park along the Hudson River Greenway. My friend who runs that path regularly isn't sure whether it goes that far, so I'm wondering if anyone familiar with the area knows if you can go all the way to the northern tip of the island along that path. Also, any tips about water, bathrooms, or general "heads up" info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
My wife and I will be making a trip to NYC this weekend. While we're out and about, I'd like to keep my eyes open for some used RPGs, specifically 1st or 2nd ed Dungeons and Dragons. Where should I look? I know I can get things cheaper online (online recommendations also welcomed for extra XP), but I need to actually examine the books to see if they fit my needs. [more inside]
My 18 year old son is going to take a bus from Boston to NYC to see the opera. Is it dangerous for him to walk to the Port Authority? [more inside]
In the first week of June I am going to NYC to visit a girl who I am hoping to woo. I have a pretty open window: the first day we are meeting is June 4th, and I'll be leaving that Sunday. Snowflake details inside. [more inside]
My favorite place in the entire world is Philadelphia's exquisite and incomparable Mütter Museum, I've seen Body Worlds more than a dozen times... and you should probably refrain from clicking either of those links if you are squeamish. I will soon be spending a week in NYC followed by a week in Washington, DC. Can you help me make a list of similar museums, exhibits, and collections to visit while I'm there? [more inside]
We're looking to a hire a good balloon twister / balloon artist for my kid's birthday party in Northern New Jersey but we can't find a Yelp equivalent for suggestions, and we don't want to pick one randomly from the Google results. Can anyone give us some suggestions? We're pretty close to New York City so someone from there would be fine as well.
Hi, I'm wondering what exam number DCAS / ACS is currently hiring for for Child Protective Specialist? Or do you know when they will be hiring from Exam #3341, which was Oct-Dec 2012. Thank you!
Is there a non-dodgy way to get a list of every single company in NYC? (I guess every legal entity?) [more inside]
How has getting work through NYC temp agencies changed since the 1990s? [more inside]
Turns out we will have a few free hours next Wednesday (4/23) afternoon in NYC after an appointment and before the bus ride home. Can you suggest interesting things to do for folks who've seen most of the major museums multiple times, like to stroll but not hike, are comfortable with the subway, and are nerdy? Probably don't have time to take train or bus to outer boroughs, unfortunately, otherwise we'd probably just head to the Brooklyn Botanical gardens and look at the flowering trees, which must be revving up about now. Additional points for good but not super expensive restaurants on Upper East or Midtown East to have lunch after the appointment, like all kinds of ethnic foods but avoid pork. Many thanks; I've been looking though lots of listings but always get a bit overwhelmed by Time Out and the like.
My gal and are buying a used Jeep Cherokee. We live in Brooklyn and want to put our minds at ease that this is a decent buy for what we're looking for. Plenty of details within; the short version is: what do we ask the mechanic to check before we commit to buying, and what are the next steps with insurance, DMV, etc.? [more inside]
A friend of mine, a NYC resident with no firearm permit from the NYPD, recently purchased a rifle at a gun show in PA (apparently the dealer didn't recognize his address as being within NYC and didn't ask him for a permit, as NY state residents can purchase rifles without one). He says he does plan on applying for the necessary permit, but in the meantime is storing the rifle in his home. How likely is he to get into any trouble? [more inside]
Looking for good, reasonably priced, activity dates in the NYC area. What do you do when you're not doing dinner and a show? Hands-on is preferred - active rather than passive activities. [more inside]
I am looking for decent afternoon or evening watching a baseball game; without all the rah-rah videos and constant music filling in all the time. The Brooklyn Cyclones have long fallen to this unfortunate trend. I don't need big stars or added entertainment.
Two of my friends want to go on an overnight camping trip starting from Manhattan, but separately. So I'm looking for one place where we could camp overnight that's within a 30-60 mile bike ride of public transportation, and another place where we could camp overnight that's within a few miles' walk of public transportation. The bike site could be either a prepared camp site or just a place where people won't mind us pitching a tent; the walking site really has to be approved for camping. Does the hive mind have any suggestions? [more inside]
What delicious foodstuff can I send to some friends in NYC for putting me up for a few nights last week? [more inside]
This is a question about NYC real estate, specifically about a building maintenance issue. After many years of renting, I am in the market for a co-op apartment in the five boroughs of NYC. There is a problem with my current building that I am willing to tolerate as a tenant that would be a complete deal-breaker as an owner The issue is this: [more inside]
I'm a single, college-educated, mid-twenties male who will very likely be relocating from the West Coast to the Tri-State area in a few months for a full-time desk job in Rutherford, New Jersey. I'd love to know your recommendations for affordable rooms, apartments, studios, etc. in safe and convenient neighborhoods. [N.B. I grew up in and lived in South Brooklyn for many years, so I'm familiar with the NYC area, but I've never lived in NJ nor ever considered living there in the past.] [more inside]
We're going out in the Kips Bay neighborhood soon with friends. Can you recommend a good restaurant for a festive meal that is NOT Indian? As close to 29th and 2nd as possible. [more inside]
I'm looking for an apt share in NYC within 20 minutes or so to midtown by train. Is craigslist the best place to look? Do you have any general tips on how to do the search, what to avoid? My experience so far is that it can look good on photos but still be very rundown, but no photos/details is likely to be even that much worse.
I currently work in NYC for a large multinational financial services company. I'm in a contract position here, which is due to be renewed in August (which possibly might not be). They've internally offered me a full-time position in Montreal, and I don't know if I should take the offer (which is flat on salary. 110k/yr). I can probably find a similar position in NYC, but it'd be a contract position, and I really like the culture of the company I work for and I guess I'd rather have the job security of a full time position right now... huge snowflake inside. I'm looking for an affordable restaurant that could accommodate a group of 10 on Saturday night for a birthday party. Ideally in a neighborhood in NYC with solid nearby nightlife. [more inside]
After trying Coors Banquet Beer purchased at a grocery store in Colorado, I have a strange and growing craving to drink this supremely yeasty beverage again. However, I'm having trouble locating it (tried Fairway UES and Whole Foods Union Square so far). I checked the Coors website locator, but it gives me locations that sell ALL kinds of Coors, which is not helpful. Have you seen this beer? Help! [more inside]
Apropos of absolutely nothing, I was recently struck with a childhood memory of visiting a store, several times, in NYC called "The Pushcart". I'd like to see if I can find more about it, but that's proving... hard. Help? [more inside]
My husband and I have a rare free weekend coming up. We'd love to go away for that weekend. The problem we are finding is that the conventional recommendations don't work for us! Hoping someone can help us find a stress-free getaway. [more inside]

Looking for a recommendation for a decent psychiatrist or psychopharmacologists in NYC. [more inside]
I was using an online "therapist finder" (Probably Psychology Today but I can't be certain) about 6 weeks ago to find myself a therapist. I had come across one in particular that I thought I saved a link to, but now can't find. I know it was a woman, and she mentioned dogs in her description/bio - both that she was a dog owner and lover, but also that her dog could sometimes be present for therapy, and/or you could bring your dog. I know that's not unheard of, but her description really resonated with me in terms of what I need right now in a therapist and I am hoping someone might recognize my description. Thank you!
We have enjoyed 6+ years of our gas oven/stovetop, but now our NYC landlord is planning to replace all the ovens in our building with electric. This seems like it will make our (already high) electricity bill even higher. Is there anything we can do? [more inside]

I'm 99% sure the symptoms I've been experiencing for years are caused by a chronic H. Pylori infection. My understanding is that eradication is only 70-80% likely to actually work. I'd like to do this right. Can you recommend a doctor in NYC? [more inside]

Okay, I'm in NYC and I need a PI related T-Shirt for Pi-Daytomorrow... Anyone know of any stores where I can get one? (It's too late for an online order)
First date in NYC, near grand central and the Bryant park area, weekend afternoon. Likes: animals, theatre, the arts, books. Fun and interactive things would be especially welcome. Suggestions?

Does anyone have a good Sports Medicine doctor in NYC who takes Health Republic and/or Magnacre? Also, can you explain to me how health insurance works in this case? [more inside]
A close family member will be turning 21 next January (toward the end of the month). I'd like to surprise her with a weekend trip to NYC in honor of her birthday. She has never been before and loves to travel, and I think it will make a great memory. Here's the rub: I can't decide whether to 1) go on her actual birthday (pro: we'll be there on her actual birthday and con: January is kinda dreary), 2) celebrate her birthday early and go during the Christmas season (pro: Christmastime in NYC is so special), or 3) celebrate her birthday at home and go when it warms up, possibly late May (pro: it will be nice to stroll the neighborhoods and not shiver). What do you guys think?
I am looking for recommendations for a good psychiatrist in Manhattan. It would be superb if this doctor was in-network for Oxford, but it's not absolutely necessary (and seems very hard to find). [more inside]
My brother's birthday is next Friday, and I am honestly stymied as to what to get him (and cannot get a serious answer out of him.) He is in his early 30's, and just moved into a new apartment that has a cute outdoor space. (Pavement ground) Does anyone have a similar space? He and his girlfriend have already furnished the place, so they don't need essentials. Etsy-friendly suggestions particularly welcome.
I'll be visiting New York next week and I'd like to buy some jeans, but I have no idea where to look! It'll be my first trip to the U.S. and I'm not familiar with American retailers at all. My particular taste and even more particular body type will probably eliminate a lot of options, but I hope you can point out the ones that are left. [more inside]
I'm trying to create a travel book and website for tourists to NYC. Are there any resources I can use for free or very low cost in regards to the street maps in the printed version, especially those including subway and/or bus stops (nice, but not required).
I have some boxes and some furniture. They need to fit in the back of a van. Is there somewhere on the internet where I can tell it the sizes of my things, and the size of the space they need to fit into, and it tells me how to most efficiently stack my things? [more inside]
Can you suggest particular jobs and places to look for jobs? [more inside]
I'd like to go to a beer bar in Manhattan this weekend. I've always liked Zum Schneider but want to try some place different. Prefer a place that's typically not too crowded on a Saturday around 6pm (that seems early enough to avoid crowds, right?); quiet enough to talk; and ideally, which also has good food. Thanks!
