Suggestions for cheap last minute NYC to Europe flights?

Short of Priceline, are there any ways to regularly get cheap last-minute airfares to Western/ Central Europe for a single traveler? I have a job that sometimes allows me to work remotely, and I'd love to leverage that by hopping off to Europe every so often. I'd be happy to fly on last-minute notice, without a lot of luggage. I have relatively easy access to EWR and JFK. [more inside]

A chill, relaxing NYE/NYD that happens to be in NYC.

I don't need to actual celebrate/acknowledge New Year's Eve/Day in NYC, but I will happen to be in the city for the holiday and am looking for calm, interesting possibilities that don't involve locking yourself into an apartment against the hordes (the entire time). Looking for your suggestions on how to spend a few days in NYC over the holiday that don't necessarily involve celebrating the holiday (but do avoid crowd crush to the greatest extent possible.) Where do I buy glacé fruit in NYC?

Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and the mom-and-pops in a five block radius of my house don't have glacé fruit, and I just moved to Queens and don't know where to go for it. I want cherries (ideally the green and red dyed ones), orange peel, pineapple, but NO CITRON. I don't care how much it costs or if it's fancy or not, but it needs to go in a fruitcake by Monday and I need a couple pounds of each. If they definitely have some and can sell it to me on a weekend or an evening after 7, I'll travel pretty far. Help!

What's the best response to a new landlord's request?

The apartment building I live in, in Brooklyn, NY, was just sold to a new owner. My lease, which expires in a year, was signed with the old management, and is a simple, non rent-regulated, rental. There was -$0- security deposit; I didn't pay one, and my lease reflects that. Worried about travelling to NYC next week.

I postponed my last planned trip to NYC so I could visit during the Macy's Parade (something I always wanted to attend). Now that the US is in a state of high alert regarding the recent terror attacks overseas and ominous threats to NY and Washington DC I have to admit I am scared to travel. I do understand that terror is what they want to instill on us and the terrorists shouldn't win BUT I am pretty apprehensive. I am just wondering what others think about traveling right now?

Renovation in NYC

My wife and I are considering buying a place that requires a kitchen and bath renovation in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Our real estate agent is suggesting we get an architect or contractor to come in, take a look, and give us an estimate before we even put in an offer. A couple questions: (i) is this necessary? We've done some research online and have a good general idea of how much kitchen and bathroom renovations cost - or I am I wrong and we really need a individualized estimate?; (ii) we don't have any friends who are architects/contractors - how would we go about finding one to come by a place we haven't even put an offer in on yet and give us an estimate?; (iii) assuming we go forward, with or without getting an estimate up front, how do we find a good architect and/or contractor - and do we need both? Any answers, suggestions, resources, etc. would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

What's a good date idea (we're in our 40s)?

I'm a woman in my late 40s, haven't dated in a while, and was just set up with someone. We met for a drink, and it went all right. No electric sparks, but no terrible STOP signs either. He seems like a good guy, and I want to give it a chance, but since I didn't feel a strong attraction or flirty vibe, I'd like to do something for our next date OTHER than simply going out to dinner. What public figure has a great office in the New York area?

What public creative person (defined pretty broadly, but hopefully at least somewhat famous) has a really cool office in the NYC area? We're looking for someone with a rich, interesting-looking space, interesting tools and great stories. Examples might be say, magazine writer Gay Talese, who works in his townhouse in Manhattan surrounded by memorabilia from all his past stories, or the honchos at Pixar who have special secret hideaways and whatnot.
