I'm an experienced software engineer and manager. I have a number of successful projects under my belt and some really great companies on my resume. However, I'm really, really bad at the traditional whiteboard interview. I'm getting ready to start looking for a new job. Would it be worthwhile to request an alternative interview format? My husband and I are expecting a baby in June. Hooray! We live in a one-bedroom, fifth-floor Manhattan walk-up. Yikes... I would really appreciate help with what a newborn baby actually needs in our situation? [more inside]
I'm interested in comedy shows in NYC that take place outside the big mainstream venues like Caroline's or Gotham Comedy Club. For lack of a better term, you might call what I'm looking for "underground" comedy shows, but I'm not construing that term narrowly. Just really looking to get away from the more touristy spots that seem to often feature bland acts. Edgier/off-beat stuff welcome. Thanks for your ideas!
I am in the city for business tonight and will be left to my own devices for dinner. I would like someplace where I can sit at a somewhat quiet bar, read a book, and eat a reasonably priced burger. Help me Metafilter, I am paralyzed with indecision. [more inside]

The top 1/3rd or so of 1 WTC is illuminated, at night, by intensely bright white lights which look almost exactly like construction lights hung in unfinished buildings. Other skyscrapers are lit by warmer yellowish office lights. What's the deal? Are those floors empty or is that just the new trend in skyscraper lighting?

I'd like to find a good tea shop, or coffee shop that makes good tea, to do some reading and light laptop work (just writing some emails, not "working remotely" or anything like that). I'm specifically looking for cafes, not (exclusively) retail stores, and also not looking for the "afternoon tea"/"high tea" experience. [more inside]

Boy, did I mess up my knee. A sudden wrench, and . . . . it has since healed to the point where it basically doesn't hurt for regular walking and standing, but when I put any kind of sideways pressure on it or put weight on it while it is bent (as when going up or down stairs) it is extremely painful. This has been going on for a few months now and not improving, so perhaps it is time to go to the doctor. Can anyone recommend a good orthopedist in Manhattan? Thanks.

We just got engaged. We want a simple, simple, simple NYC wedding (but not a city hall/bar party thing). We do not want to plan it ourselves: we do not know how and do not have interest or talent at this sort of thing. We want a wedding planner. Advise. [more inside]

I found a dresser on the sidewalk in Brooklyn yesterday, the 30th. I rushed to take it, since it appeared to be of very high quality and, having recently moved, I needed one! Now, I'm paranoid I may have exposed myself to bedbugs - not because of any obvious empirical evidence, but because the risk in New York City is purportedly so high, and the piece could have been thrown out because of an infestation. (It could also have been the casualty of a move.) The only possible visual sign of any infestation is here, in the base of the dresser: http://imgur.com/ARBrX3K This white substance scattered and disappeared when I tried to scoop a bit of it up with some paper. I think it's probably wood shavings from the dresser itself; an extensive search turned up no obvious signs of droppings, shed skins, the things themselves. But this white, salt-like substance does not seem altogether inconsistent with eggs. Should I get this thing out of my apartment immediately?

Short of Priceline, are there any ways to regularly get cheap last-minute airfares to Western/ Central Europe for a single traveler? I have a job that sometimes allows me to work remotely, and I'd love to leverage that by hopping off to Europe every so often. I'd be happy to fly on last-minute notice, without a lot of luggage. I have relatively easy access to EWR and JFK. [more inside]

I don't need to actual celebrate/acknowledge New Year's Eve/Day in NYC, but I will happen to be in the city for the holiday and am looking for calm, interesting possibilities that don't involve locking yourself into an apartment against the hordes (the entire time). Looking for your suggestions on how to spend a few days in NYC over the holiday that don't necessarily involve celebrating the holiday (but do avoid crowd crush to the greatest extent possible.) So, I've been job hunting, and working through headhunters and the like. It seems like a lot of the jobs through the headhunters are contract gigs. I'm really anxious to switch jobs, so I'm willing to accept a contract gig, but what am I actually getting into? I've only ever worked as a permanent employee!
Hi. We're a late 30s F/M couple (both straight) interested in learning more about both the group sex and BDSM scenes in New York City. Groups, websites, articles, tips for newcomers and any other advice or suggestions are all welcome. [more inside]
Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and the mom-and-pops in a five block radius of my house don't have glacé fruit, and I just moved to Queens and don't know where to go for it. I want cherries (ideally the green and red dyed ones), orange peel, pineapple, but NO CITRON. I don't care how much it costs or if it's fancy or not, but it needs to go in a fruitcake by Monday and I need a couple pounds of each. If they definitely have some and can sell it to me on a weekend or an evening after 7, I'll travel pretty far. Help!
I'm headed to NYC to see Hamilton with my sister, niece and niece's friend at the end of Dec. (to be specific, we will arrive 12/27, see show 12/28 pm, head home 12/29). What cool stuff should we do while there? [more inside]

In short: looking for a place where some friends and I can hang out for a few hours midday on a February Saturday in New York City. I have a long layover in New York on my birthday, and I thought it might be a cool chance to see my friends (a handful of close ones, a couple dozen of less close folks I'm fond of). I want to say,"I'll be HERE from 11-2, stop by at any point to say hi!"** Any suggestions for a great place to do this? [more inside]

The apartment building I live in, in Brooklyn, NY, was just sold to a new owner. My lease, which expires in a year, was signed with the old management, and is a simple, non rent-regulated, rental. There was -$0- security deposit; I didn't pay one, and my lease reflects that. The new owner/management team placed letters under the doors in the building today, requesting a two month security deposit. [more inside]

I postponed my last planned trip to NYC so I could visit during the Macy's Parade (something I always wanted to attend). Now that the US is in a state of high alert regarding the recent terror attacks overseas and ominous threats to NY and Washington DC I have to admit I am scared to travel. I do understand that terror is what they want to instill on us and the terrorists shouldn't win BUT I am pretty apprehensive. I am just wondering what others think about traveling right now?
