Are there any good guides to approaching NYC employment agencies and consistently securing work? I need a job so I can leave my abusive partner, keep my tiny apartment, and see a therapist. I need stability. I’m a dedicated, bright, friendly, curious, and solid worker. I just don’t know how to make myself stand out or get a consistent response from either cold applications or agencies. Turning to MeFi again for guidance. [more inside]

I moved to a new city (NYC) within the past 2 years and I am feeling a little lonely. [more inside]
I was taking a walk and found that somebody had left four bags of women's clothing on the curb labeled "FREE CLOTHES" alongside a futon also presumably free. The road is kind of off to the side, and doesn't get that much foot traffic by nyc standards. I want to report this find in a way, to make it more likely that it will go to somebody who could make use of it. Is this a good idea? If it is, what would be a good way to do so? Have considered craigslist, FB neighborhood post, freecycle forum(?). [more inside]
At the seasoned age of 38, I'm seriously considering getting my first tattoo. I've been thinking about a particular design for the better part of a decade, but damn, I'm having a hard time tracking down the right person in New York City and need recommendations. [more inside]
I have a roommate who talks about herself until blue in the face. As a polite human, I will listen to her and interact. She will occasionally ask me how I am, and then will stick her nose in her phone and not show the slightest interest in my answer. I have 6 more months with her, and would like to have a non-insulting conversation with her about this pattern. How do I do that?
Looking for recommendations for places to get waxed in NYC (Manhattan preferred). I have tried Bliss and Uni K; looking for other suggestions. Thanks!
My wife, a friend, and I are traveling to New York in a couple of weeks. A few days ago my wife broke her ankle, and she'll be in a lower-leg cast and on crutches during the trip. Her orthopedist has approved the travel. We're looking for advice from people familiar with the places and activities we had planned, particularly people who have experience doing so with limited mobility. Details below. [more inside]

Where can I find a fake/faux/vegan leather men's jacket in NYC (preferably Manhattan)? Some of the ones on the Wilson Leather site look good — but I'd like to try it on in the store, and they don't seem to have a NYC store. Please recommend a specific store, not just a general area. Thanks in advance.

The wife and I are visiting NYC next week, and we haven't been for more than 10 years. Unfortunately, we've only got one evening to spend before we move onto another city, but there are a lot of friends we'd like to see. I want to invite my friends to have a sit-down dinner with us to catch up, since there won't be time for anything else, but I have a few criteria... [more inside]
I'll be visiting upstate New York on business in a week's time and am planning to extend the trip by a few days to explore NYC and possibly surroundings. I've never really considered going to NYC before, so I'm struggling to know what I should do to make the most of my time there! [more inside]
I've scored tickets to the Superman/Batman movie premier in NYC (at Radio City Music Hall). I want to go, but want to 1. minimize cost for a 2 night stay in NYC, 2. be close to Radio City Music Hall. What are your recommendations for a hotel. Additional info: Date of the premier is March 20, we're flying in on the 19th, leaving on the 21st. 2 people.

Seems a long shot, but: A friend and I are planning on doing the Falls to Statue (Buffalo NY to NYC) route by canoe this summer, and we're intrigued by the prospect of bringing a Google Street View rig with us. What would be the best way to get in touch with Google's Maps team to see if they would be interested in letting us take a Streetview rig on the route? I've poked around Google's "Contact US" site without much that inspires confidence.
I'm an experienced software engineer and manager. I have a number of successful projects under my belt and some really great companies on my resume. However, I'm really, really bad at the traditional whiteboard interview. I'm getting ready to start looking for a new job. Would it be worthwhile to request an alternative interview format? I'm interested in comedy shows in NYC that take place outside the big mainstream venues like Caroline's or Gotham Comedy Club. For lack of a better term, you might call what I'm looking for "underground" comedy shows, but I'm not construing that term narrowly. Just really looking to get away from the more touristy spots that seem to often feature bland acts. Edgier/off-beat stuff welcome. Thanks for your ideas!
I am in the city for business tonight and will be left to my own devices for dinner. I would like someplace where I can sit at a somewhat quiet bar, read a book, and eat a reasonably priced burger. Help me Metafilter, I am paralyzed with indecision. [more inside]

The top 1/3rd or so of 1 WTC is illuminated, at night, by intensely bright white lights which look almost exactly like construction lights hung in unfinished buildings. Other skyscrapers are lit by warmer yellowish office lights. What's the deal? Are those floors empty or is that just the new trend in skyscraper lighting?

I'd like to find a good tea shop, or coffee shop that makes good tea, to do some reading and light laptop work (just writing some emails, not "working remotely" or anything like that). I'm specifically looking for cafes, not (exclusively) retail stores, and also not looking for the "afternoon tea"/"high tea" experience. [more inside]

Boy, did I mess up my knee. A sudden wrench, and . . . . it has since healed to the point where it basically doesn't hurt for regular walking and standing, but when I put any kind of sideways pressure on it or put weight on it while it is bent (as when going up or down stairs) it is extremely painful. This has been going on for a few months now and not improving, so perhaps it is time to go to the doctor. Can anyone recommend a good orthopedist in Manhattan? Thanks.

I found a dresser on the sidewalk in Brooklyn yesterday, the 30th. I rushed to take it, since it appeared to be of very high quality and, having recently moved, I needed one! Now, I'm paranoid I may have exposed myself to bedbugs - not because of any obvious empirical evidence, but because the risk in New York City is purportedly so high, and the piece could have been thrown out because of an infestation. (It could also have been the casualty of a move.) The only possible visual sign of any infestation is here, in the base of the dresser: http://imgur.com/ARBrX3K This white substance scattered and disappeared when I tried to scoop a bit of it up with some paper. I think it's probably wood shavings from the dresser itself; an extensive search turned up no obvious signs of droppings, shed skins, the things themselves. But this white, salt-like substance does not seem altogether inconsistent with eggs. Should I get this thing out of my apartment immediately?

Short of Priceline, are there any ways to regularly get cheap last-minute airfares to Western/ Central Europe for a single traveler?
