After years of struggling (and slowly failing) as a freelancer, I finally have a decent job and some savings. I also have a huge tax debt, including a few unfiled years for both the IRS and NYS. Can you recommend a tax expert in NYC (or nearby) to assist me in getting out from under? I'm looking to file returns and work out payment plans, as well as get on track for the future. I feel intense, paralyzing shame about this, and I really need someone who won't add to that with lectures or chastisement. Thank you!
I'm going to be spending my 25th birthday alone. What should I do to celebrate? [more inside]
I’m suffering from excruciating loneliness, and it’s grinding me down. I haven’t had a real relationship in more than six years, and I simply don’t need any more “me” time. Please, could you help me think up some ideas for where I could meet real, live, reasonably youthful, reasonably mentally healthy, reasonably intellectual guys … in person? [more inside]
Can you recommend an excellent physical therapist for scoliosis in Brooklyn or Manhattan? [more inside]
Where can I buy a shark ring in NYC as soon as possible? [more inside]
My NYC townhouse has a garden in the back. The garden has a wall around it, which has been there for decades. Two nearby trees has caused it to bow out of alignment toward my neighbor's garden, though not dramatically so. My neighbor claims in a letter to me that the wall will one day collapse into her garden, and wants us to share the cost of replacing the wall, before that happens, with a fence. She also said that if I don't agree to do this, I better make sure that my insurance covers the possible damage to her property that a collapse could cause. I think my neighbor (who is wealthy) just wants a new fence for aesthetic reasons so it matches other fencing on her property, and that the wall is fine -- and I have some questions for the hive-mind... I moved to a new city (NYC) within the past 2 years and I am feeling a little lonely. [more inside]
My wife, a friend, and I are traveling to New York in a couple of weeks. A few days ago my wife broke her ankle, and she'll be in a lower-leg cast and on crutches during the trip. Her orthopedist has approved the travel. We're looking for advice from people familiar with the places and activities we had planned, particularly people who have experience doing so with limited mobility. Details below. [more inside]
My routine has changed recently and I need to be able to shower at the gym, and I'd prefer a gym where I can change afterward in private. Does one exist in lower Manhattan? [more inside]
The apartment building I live in, in Brooklyn, NY, was just sold to a new owner. My lease, which expires in a year, was signed with the old management, and is a simple, non rent-regulated, rental. There was -$0- security deposit; I didn't pay one, and my lease reflects that. The new owner/management team placed letters under the doors in the building today, requesting a two month security deposit. [more inside]
I started a MFA writing program in Vancouver this fall. I wasn't sure about whether I should go or not to begin with, and now, I'm still second-guess and worrying I made a big mistake. I'm unhappy, often, and I'm worried that if I stay it will be for the wrong reasons: a big, heavy sunken cost fallacy. Can you help, please? Long complicated backstory inside. [more inside]

Where can I find those cheap dollar store pregnancy tests in NYC *right now*? This shouldn't be that hard, but all the cheap-o dollar stores in my neighborhood don't seem to carry them anymore. Do you know of a store in Brooklyn (preferably off the B/Q) or in Manhattan (south of 34th St, also preferably off the B/Q) that carries those super cheap at-home pregnancy tests? [more inside]

I'm a 30-year-old straight single guy, debating a move to either NYC or SF. Singledom has been getting tiresome (after 6+ months), and I'd be interested in knowing whether dating would be substantially better or easier in one or the other city. I'm a slightly nerdy (but by no-means super-geeky) and fairly athletic/outdoorsy highly-educated professional. In either city, I'd be living in or near the urban center. [more inside]

I'm headed to NYC for the weekend and would like to spend part of a day relaxing at a spa, with massage, sauna, baths, the works (think Aire Ancient Baths or Russian Baths, for two I've considered). So, I'm moving to New York, and the housing situation looks really complicated. I'm a single, college-educated, mid-twenties male who will very likely be relocating from the West Coast to the Tri-State area in a few months for a full-time desk job in Rutherford, New Jersey. I'd love to know your recommendations for affordable rooms, apartments, studios, etc. in safe and convenient neighborhoods. [N.B. I grew up in and lived in South Brooklyn for many years, so I'm familiar with the NYC area, but I've never lived in NJ nor ever considered living there in the past.] [more inside]

I have moderate-to-severe social anxiety which I'm trying to overcome on my own by exposure therapy. My big goal for this year was to take the train into Manhattan alone. We will be travelling to the US from Europe next year, and I'm interested in the Macy's parade. Is it worth timing our trip so we can see it - particularly as hotels seem to be cheaper in November - or is it a bad idea to visit the US during Thanksgiving (and maybe the chaos of Black Friday)? Possibly relevant: neither of us have driving licenses so would be reliant on public transport, and would plan on spending a few days in NYC before travelling on or flying home.

I help run an arts organization in NYC, and recently, it was brought to our attention that a person's behavior has made some of our other community members feel unsafe. The person has agreed to stay away from our organization and its events until invited back, and seems genuinely repentant. I'm looking for information about restorative justice - either resources on how it works, what standard practices are, and also (ideally) any organizations in the NYC area that could help us understand and navigate this situation. Please understand I can't provide any more details than this, for obvious reasons of confidentiality.

Are there any better steps we can take in the meantime to prepare, minimize the infestation size, and lower our costs? [more inside]

I'm spending Valentine's Day on a business trip to Manhattan instead of home with my sweetie. What little treat/gift can I pick up to take home that says "I went all the way to NYC just to get this for you"? [more inside]
I'd like recommendations in Manhattan for an off the beaten path Italian restaurant that would likely still have tables available for a Valentine's Day dinner. We are in our mid 20s and price isn't an issue. Just something romantic and delicious. Many of the famous restaurants are all booked and that's fine with me - I'd prefer something a little less known. Please, any recommendations or personal experiences!
Looking for an NYC therapist specializing in treating problematic drinking. It is for someone who is a very private person so 12-step/AA/etc. is not an option. The issue is infrequent binge drinking leading to behavior stressing an otherwise happy and healthy relationship. Anywhere in Brooklyn or Manhattan works. Looking specifically for a psychotherapist, not a psychiatrist. Insurance not an issue. Throwaway email: firstname.lastname@example.org
