How do I look for a job in NY without living there?

I'm trying to move to Brooklyn by December 1st. I have some money saved up, but I'll need to find a part time coffeeshop job (4 days a week) to support myself while I intern the other 2-3 days. Right now I live in Boston and I have no clue how to go about looking for a job from afar. Considering that I may have to go on several interviews before being offered a position, that I currently have a part time job here so I can't be staying in NY for long periods of time while I look, that I have no friends in the city to stay with and that my funds are limited, what should I do? What would be dumb to miss for a person on business travel to NYC ?

I have never been to NYC. I'm on business travel next week to NYC (Manhattan financial district to be precise). I won't have a lot of touristy time, but my evenings are free, Monday - Thursday. With that limited time, and a hotel in the financial district, what sort of things would it be dumb for someone to not checkout? [more inside]

Restorative Justice in NYC

I help run an arts organization in NYC, and recently, it was brought to our attention that a person's behavior has made some of our other community members feel unsafe. The person has agreed to stay away from our organization and its events until invited back, and seems genuinely repentant. I'm looking for information about restorative justice - either resources on how it works, what standard practices are, and also (ideally) any organizations in the NYC area that could help us understand and navigate this situation. Please understand I can't provide any more details than this, for obvious reasons of confidentiality.

Am I insane to buy a mk1 Toyota MR2 if I live in NYC without a garage?

I live in Brooklyn, sans garage, and have recently gotten it into my head that I want a small used car for occasional driving... I'm talking about the few miles to my office a couple times a week, maybe to the beach on weekends. Perhaps as far as the Jersey shore once or twice a summer. I do not intend or need to use it as a daily commuter. Seems pretty simple, only catch is... I am infatuated with the idea of getting a mk1 Toyota MR2. [more inside]

Writing spot in Lower Manhattan or upper Brooklyn

When I lived in Chicago, there was a great late-night coffee shop called New Wave Cafe in Logan Square that was perfect for after-work writing. I've been having a hard time finding a similar spot since moving to NYC. It doesn't need to be a coffee shop, but it does need to be well-lit enough that I can read, and calm enough that I won't be seen as preventing the establishment from doing business. Bonus points if the place has a neighborhood-y feel with a friendly staff. I live in Greenpoint, work in SoHo, and usually commute via bicycle over the Williamsburg Bridge. Any suggestions, Metafilter?

Staging an MMA fight is illegal in NYC; so how can I see one?

It's currently illegal for promoters to put on an MMA (i.e. 'mixed martial arts,' or 'ultimate fighting') bout in NYC. I'm sure these matches go on nonetheless, even if it's just skilled fighters fighting before spectators, gratis. Anyone know where/how I can see a fight? Or what types of places host fights (I imagine boxing gyms?) in other cities?

Advice on Professional Cleaning of a DSLR Sensor

I've had a Canon 5D Mark II for about 2.5 years, and I've recently noticed some bad dust particle issues that are on the sensor or mirror, not the lens. Can someone recommend a good camera store in New York City that could do a good professional job of cleaning my sensor (and an idea of how much this will cost)? I've looked into cleaning kits, and I think I would rather have a professional do it. Thanks! [more inside]

Can you walk? You can? Then get out of the damn elevator!

If a building (in New York City) is listed as being accessible for disabled people, are you allowed to ask them if they're disabled before letting them use the elevator and deny them access to it if they say they're not?
