I have just learned that I may need to be out of my apartment by the end of the month. I am thinking of a furnished rental for a few months until I've figured out where I want to live next. I have been in this place over 20 years and my head is spinning. I will need to put things in storage, and I have a cat. I am also a smoker. My costs will all be covered for the rental and storage and the moves (both to the rental and the final place I choose). I am in the NYC area. I have about three weeks to figure this out. Help! Advice?
I'm a single young man currently living in New Jersey. I work downtown (near the Fulton St. A stop) and have a standing appointment in the West Village twice a week that keeps me out until 10:30 and 12:30, respectively. I'd like to move into the city proper to make both of these things easier, but I've only ever lived with family and friends (in Chicago). What would be some good neighborhoods for me to consider? How do I find room-mates? How do I find places to look at? Do I need a broker? More on my budget, desires, and lifestyle inside. [more inside]

Bronx WoodchipperFilter: we have a ~ 24ft x 12ft x 7ft mess of branches in our backyard after a massive clean-up. This will take a bit of time as I will go into some details but bear with me please.I have seen the earlier threads but the kinda of questions I had are, sort of, very different. I am in early 30's and have just moved to NYC. I am by myself now and expect my wife to join me after December. Currently, am in a hotel provided by my employer and can have this for a month more. My office is in mid-town manhattan (near grand central) and one client whom I would be visiting often is in long island city. I plan to use subway extensively for my travel. So, I have started my house hunting now. Q1: Is this the right time or am I too late and I should beg my employer to give me couple of more weeks? [more inside]

My birthday's coming up, and I'm looking to rent a cabin in the woods with some friends for a weekend. I'm looking for a good balance of price, proximity to NYC (ideally within 2 hours, any direction, the less the better) and woodsy-ness. Recommendations for either a specific place/rental company/rental website would be super appreciated. [more inside]

We signed a lease (2 copies) on a new apartment in NYC, at our broker's office. The 2 copies were sent to the management company. As promised, the management company sent one of the copies back to us about a week later. It's got our original signatures, but the landlord didn't sign it! The line for the landlord's signature is empty. Doesn't this mean that we're bound to the terms of the contract, but the landlord is not? It seems very wrong. Is it normal? Should we demand a copy of the lease with the signatures of both parties on it?

My roommates and I have put a deposit down on an apartment in Brooklyn. We're supposed to sign the lease (and fork over the rest of the cash) on Thursday. Idly googling our new address, I discovered that our two-family building contains an SRO (single-room occupancy) dwelling for three people who have been homeless, drug-dependent, incarcerated, institutionalized, or mentally disabled on the second floor.
