The Sunset Park life

I am intrigued by the prospect of moving to Sunset Park in Brooklyn, but would love some real talk about whether it fits in my budget ($1500 for a studio/1BR) and if I should be looking somewhere else based on my priorities. [more inside]

is this dresser too good to be true? in other words, is it bedbugs?

I found a dresser on the sidewalk in Brooklyn yesterday, the 30th. I rushed to take it, since it appeared to be of very high quality and, having recently moved, I needed one! Now, I'm paranoid I may have exposed myself to bedbugs - not because of any obvious empirical evidence, but because the risk in New York City is purportedly so high, and the piece could have been thrown out because of an infestation. (It could also have been the casualty of a move.) The only possible visual sign of any infestation is here, in the base of the dresser: http://imgur.com/ARBrX3K This white substance scattered and disappeared when I tried to scoop a bit of it up with some paper. I think it's probably wood shavings from the dresser itself; an extensive search turned up no obvious signs of droppings, shed skins, the things themselves. But this white, salt-like substance does not seem altogether inconsistent with eggs. Should I get this thing out of my apartment immediately?

Need a Good Manhattan Church for Christmas Eve Services

What's the best response to a new landlord's request?

The apartment building I live in, in Brooklyn, NY, was just sold to a new owner. My lease, which expires in a year, was signed with the old management, and is a simple, non rent-regulated, rental. There was -$0- security deposit; I didn't pay one, and my lease reflects that. The new owner/management team placed letters under the doors in the building today, requesting a two month security deposit. [more inside]

Renovation in NYC

My wife and I are considering buying a place that requires a kitchen and bath renovation in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Our real estate agent is suggesting we get an architect or contractor to come in, take a look, and give us an estimate before we even put in an offer. A couple questions: (i) is this necessary? We've done some research online and have a good general idea of how much kitchen and bathroom renovations cost - or I am I wrong and we really need a individualized estimate?; (ii) we don't have any friends who are architects/contractors - how would we go about finding one to come by a place we haven't even put an offer in on yet and give us an estimate?; (iii) assuming we go forward, with or without getting an estimate up front, how do we find a good architect and/or contractor - and do we need both? Any answers, suggestions, resources, etc. would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Your favorite NYC art blogs and calendars?

Dearest New Yorkers, Having just showed up in Brooklyn little more than a week ago (via SF), I've been wonderfully overwhelmed. The one thing I'm missing is a good list of the best places to help distill (or not distill) the innumerable art events and openings popping off both nearby and in Manhattan. Any advices and favorite digital spots are hugely appreciated. I've got a few things I'm looking at but the more, the better. Bonus points for physical publications! <3 Matthew

Can I sublease my NY apartment while I'm gone for 1-2 years?

Our apartment in New York is rent stabilized and we love the neighborhood it's in. I was very, very lucky to find this place back back when I was single. But in April we are moving to London temporarily (maybe for two years?) because of a job my wife has taken. The dream scenario is that we could leave our furniture, find someone we trust to sublease to, and have the option to come back in two years. Or if things go terribly in London we could come back earlier. But there's a complicating factor and I don't even know if the rules would allow us to sublease for very long. Details below.
