When I lived in Chicago, there was a great late-night coffee shop called New Wave Cafe in Logan Square that was perfect for after-work writing. I've been having a hard time finding a similar spot since moving to NYC. It doesn't need to be a coffee shop, but it does need to be well-lit enough that I can read, and calm enough that I won't be seen as preventing the establishment from doing business. Bonus points if the place has a neighborhood-y feel with a friendly staff. I live in Greenpoint, work in SoHo, and usually commute via bicycle over the Williamsburg Bridge. Any suggestions, Metafilter?

Is there a bar or other space in Brooklyn, Manhattan, or Long Island City where I can reserve a private room with a TV for a get-together to watch the Olympic Opening Ceremonies? I am not looking to pay for an entire event, just reserve a private space with a TV and proximity to a bar where my friends can buy drinks.

I want to rent an event space in NYC. Where do I start? It's basically a wedding reception without the wedding, I'd like it to hold about eighty people, with an open bar and using my own caterers. It should be three hours booked at least. I'd like it in Manhattan but totally open to nearer Brooklyn and Queens. What do I need to know and where should I go in getting a space for late October?

NYC filter: Looking for a bar on the Upper East Side (preferably east 80s/90s) which can accomodate a group of ~50-70. My high school class is having its 15th reunion, which will start off at our school and then progress to an after-party at a bar at around 9/9:30pm on a Friday in June. So a private room would work, as would a bigger bar which could simply accomodate a mass influx. Anything from divey to schmancy is a possibility. Thanks!

Business dilemma: I own a small but popular bar in NYC. The lease is coming up for renewal very very shortly. The landlord had previously told me that they would extend the lease for a certain amount of money, but has now changed that amount to be unreasonably high.
Very long complicated situation inside.

Looking for a nice place in Manhattan to watch the Duke/Villanova basketball (Sweet 16) game tonight, and maybe grab some dinner at the same time. I'm trying to avoid going to one of the many over-crowded sports bars for something a little bit more upscale, intimate, or at least quiet enough to be conversationally feasible.

I'm going to be in NYC this Saturday and I'd like to see as many of my friends as I can. I'm planning on picking a bar, and just letting everyone known I'll be there from, say, 8-11 or somesuch. I need a bar in NYC that's accessible to people coming from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and New Jersey. Our tastes run on the slightly-geeky side. Think pinball and old arcade games. There will be 10-20 of us, mostly in our late 20s.

I'd like to take my sweetheart dancing tonight in NYC. Not hip-hop or grinding, but something almost like a wedding reception - good classics for dancing, maybe some swing, maybe some rock and roll, maybe some country, maybe the twist - I definitely want to twirl her across the dance floor. We're not expert dancers we just want to go have some fun, and cheap-to-free is good too. We're coming from Astoria but anywhere in the city works for me. Pre-dancing dinner suggestions would be nice too.
