I think I made a bad decision out of ignorance of the consequences of adding my domestic partner to my health insurance coverage in NYC. I am in potentially big financial trouble because of this, but before I deal with it, I want to make sure I understand what's going on. Can you help me understand how a very low premium has turned into an enormous chunk out of my paycheck--and what happens when I file my tax returns? [more inside]
I'll be heading for the city in a few weeks, a Friday night to Sunday morning jaunt. Looking for a bar that won't get overcrowded right away with after-work drinkers to call a meetup of old friends, people on a certain webforum I frequent, etc. Nothing fancy but quirky is okay. [more inside]
The other day, I had a pair of sneakers stolen from the hallway right outside my apartment (my roommate and I usually have several pairs outside, and have never had any stolen in all the time we've been living there). The landlord was able to provide surveillance footage, and found out it was a GrubHub delivery person (who brought food to an apartment on a higher floor) at 4:20 in the morning. [more inside]
Myself and the missus are going to NYC for an anniversary weekend, arriving late Saturday and departing early evening on Tuesday. I want to make sure we have an amazing time. (Of course!) What should we do? Our likes include photography and and visual art generally, theater (but not musicals usually), classical music (especially newer stuff but old classics, too), vegetarian food, queer stuff, and museums. [more inside]
If we want to visit 9/ll Memorial, Empire State Building, Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty, do I book separately or buy a City Pass? Any other $$ saving advice/suggestions?
I work in Chelsea (NYC) and I would like to rent a studio or 1BR within 75 minutes door-to-door for $1500 or less. Where should I focus my search? More details inside. [more inside]
My friends want to see Rogue One tomorrow afternoon and have suggested a theater near Times Square. Between the crowds and increased police presence, I think getting around afterwards is going to be a headache none of us need. How wrong am I? [more inside]
I've decided the New Year's Day meal will be a simple Hopping John because of its associations with luck and wealth and folkloric good fortune. I've read this on the history of it and why it doesn't usually tun out well because of the inferior ingredients used now. I don't have time to order artisanal gold Carolina Rice or heritage red cowpeas from here so where in NYC can I find thier equilvents? [more inside]
What it says on the tin. I realized I don't have a lot of experience dating the modern way (apps for everything) anywhere else, and so have nothing to compare it to. [more inside]
I'm interested in software engineering positions at NYC-based companies that support remote working. Got any leads? Special snowflake details within. [more inside]
All my closest friends are out of town for New Year's Eve, and I'd like to find a quiet spot in the city, have a drink or two, and read a book for awhile. Any ideas of where I can do this? [more inside]
For New Years Eve, we usually have a big group and just hit a local bar that's having a party. This year it's just me and one or two other friends, and I'm not really feeling like hanging around a noisy, crowded bar all night. I'd love to come up with something a little less typical. Any suggestions? [more inside]
I was last minute tasked to be responsible for a friends tomorrow birthday celebration. The friend is a quirky artsy New Yorker in her early 30s. In the past she has enjoyed burlesque shows, various sex-positive events as celebration. It can also be a really cool music performance somewhere in Bushwick or Williamsburg - essentially anything marginally non-mainstream and interesting. With short notice and it being the holidays I am unable to find anything relevant or even where on the interwebs to look. Hive mind's input would be much appreciated!
Will we have trouble finding someone to rent to us when only one of us is working? [more inside]
H has been diagnosed with an Umbilical Hernia, he is 62 yrs and very healthy. Hernia looks about 2 inches long, no pain, not bothering him. Info on the web is confusing. regarding types of surgery (open or Lap, robotic), and repairs (mesh, no mesh, special thread). We are in the NYC area: 1. Recommendations for Dr's 2. Opinions on choices in 2016 I know YANMD...Thanks
That's pretty much the extent of it: where can I buy Soley brand (Icelandic) shampoo in NYC?
A pair of my friends would like to get married quickly (politics!), but they'll only be able to get to NYC on the 30th. After the one-day waiting period, they can get hitched on New Year's Eve sometime in the afternoon, but the Marriage Bureau is, of course, closed. Do you know of a place that wouldn't mind us taking up space for 15 or 20 minutes, tops, that early afternoon? [more inside]
I am searching for single day or weekend vipassana meditation retreats near NYC and was curious if the AskMefi community had any recommendations. [more inside]
I own a bungalow in a three season colony in the Hudson River Valley. It's a lovely, kooky, historic, snowflake of a co-op style community that is run by volunteers. However, the place has unintentionally turned into a NORC. How can we attract younger (under 60) folks to buy bungalows and be participatory members? [more inside]
I live in an NYC rent stabilized apartment and I filed an HP Action against my slumlord because he shut our water off without notice for a day. I am also claiming harassment and retaliation. He turned it back on after I contacted a tenant's rights organizer. Court is in a few days and I want to win a rent abatement. No legal aid places in NYC are doing HP actions (I exhausted all options). I am terrified. What do I say before a judge to get a rent abatement? [more inside]
Does anyone have a recommendation for a computer repair shop ideally in Brooklyn, The Bronx or Manhattan? [more inside]
Please recommend to me your favorite *kosher* delis in New York City. I'm specifically looking for restaurants that are certified as kosher and serve classics like pastrami and corned beef (like Second Ave. Deli and Pastrami Queen), not those that call themselves "kosher-style" or just "Jewish" delis (such as Katz's). Anywhere in the five boroughs is great. Thanks!
I am a government employee in New York City. I signed a union authorization card but would like to revoke this card. Is this possible, and if so, how do I do so? [more inside]

Looking for suggestions for a neighborhood to live in. I'm leaning toward something in Manhattan, but may consider Brooklyn. [more inside]
This has been a bizarre problem that's been plaguing us every late fall: for some unknown reason, we get a sudden influx of mosquitoes in our apartment that STARTS in October/November. It's always after the point in time when the weather is cold enough that mosquitoes shouldn't be alive anymore (right now it's 44ºF, for example). [more inside]
I had beautiful veneers done 10 years ago in California by an amazing dentist who has since retired. I'd like to see a recommended cosmetic dentist in NYC to discuss how to best maintain the veneers (and to answer questions about a night guard). Any recommendations?
I know, I know, it’s a hypothetical now. But I’m in NY state and I’m looking for a plan for a married couple that doesn't see the doctor that much - knock wood - but has lots of prescriptions. Healthcare spending would be a plus but not a necessity and I’d like to pay around a grand for the two of us. Suggestions?
From my research, one is expected to pay the deposit and first month's rent for an apartment in New York City with some sort of certified funds. Some things I've read have said cashier's checks, some have said traveller's checks, some have said certified checks, some have said money orders. I don't have an account anywhere with a physical presence in New York City. How do I handle this situation? Do I need a cashier's check to pay the broker's fee as well? Can I just dodge this whole problem by wiring money? [more inside]
I'm heading to NYC this weekend with my two sisters to see Hamilton (yay!). I go into the city semi-regularly to see shows but since one daughter is vegan we tend to eat at vegan places so I haven't really looked for any other restaurants. We're staying at the Marriott Marquis since it's so close to the theatre, but I want to avoid the tourist restaurants in Times Square. Walking distance would be preferable. Two of us are vegetarians so vegetarian friendly also. Any suggestions?
I need a list of all the NYC Subway stations that have above ground platforms. I've seen this map, and Wikipedia has this. But, ideally, I would like a table or list of the actual stations in text form. I found this fantastic NYC Transit Subway Entrance And Exit Dataset, but it doesn't list if the station is underground or not (not sure if I can infer from the data it does have?). Transportation nerds of MeFi, can you help me?
Have permit; need instructor. I am a total beginner. I no longer know anybody locally with a car who can teach me, so where's a good driving school for adults that can get me through the test, ideally located in Brooklyn or Queens?
I was a customer of Freelancers Medical in Brooklyn, and I loved their approach to medical care. They went out of business and transferred their patients to One Medical, which isn't as nice but still way more pleasant than a traditional primary care practice. Are there other practices in NYC (preferably near Park Slope) with a similar approach? [more inside]
After years of struggling (and slowly failing) as a freelancer, I finally have a decent job and some savings. I also have a huge tax debt, including a few unfiled years for both the IRS and NYS. Can you recommend a tax expert in NYC (or nearby) to assist me in getting out from under? I'm looking to file returns and work out payment plans, as well as get on track for the future. I feel intense, paralyzing shame about this, and I really need someone who won't add to that with lectures or chastisement. Thank you!
Dinner and an election in downtown Brooklyn [more inside]
Thinking about getting a car and live in Brooklyn. What's the best move? [more inside]
On November 5th 2008 and November 7th 2012 here in London England, I tried to collect as many British newspapers as I could that featured Barack Hussein Obama II's historic election to the presidency of the United States. The whole world was united in pride for the US on both of those days. Now that he's moving out of the White House, I feel like it's time to give them away; the question is, who gets them? [Preferably to someone in New York City. Sorry Duluth.] [more inside]
I've taken a job in NYC. Yay! The only tricky part is I'm in Texas. I could do with some advice on finding an apartment, neighborhoods, car ownership and the things I haven't thought of yet. Basically, tell me everything, but specific questions below. [more inside]
I have to get it after work tonight so no time for a lot of shopping around or flea markets. [more inside]
My account is in litigation and my building called the marshals to change my locks without notice last night. My cats and meds are trapped inside the unit. I've been calling law firms but no one has called back. Does anyone know a good firm I could get on the phone with right now? Money is no problem.
I have a very specific interest in NYC during this period. What are some good non-fiction books about it? Think the New York of Taxi Driver and A Most Violent Year. [more inside]
Which resources should I be using to find high-value/low-cost flights/hotels if I don't have a particular destination in mind? Looking to take a short trip from NYC for a couple of days next week and go someplace new or different (to me). Do airlines have last-minute just fill some seat deals for those of us who don't travel enough to have any status? Do you have specific ideas for easy and inexpensive escapes from NYC at the end of October?
Which NYC (Manhattan) ice rink, accessible from Chelsea Market, is best for figure skating practice? [more inside]
During the warm months, every other weekend, people put on a block party type thing on my street. Most aspects of of the event are benign and fun. But: about 3-4 DJs set up along the street, which is not very long and spend the next 10 hours competing with each other. It makes my apartment uninhabitable for that time period, even with all the windows closed. My wife and I have to shout at each other to communicate, etc. I'd like to know how to contact the board/committee/official who approves these permits and make a complaint about the noise. [more inside]
I've got a new baby and a friend coming to town who wants to meet this baby on Friday! Friend has a tight time window and needs to meet in Manhattan somewhere in-between Midtown and the West Village. I have no idea where to go. [more inside]
