[Asking for a friend] My building had a fire last night, on the floor below mine. I have middling fire damage at baseboard level in both bedrooms, both of which will be uninhabitable until the damage is ripped out and redone. All my windows are broken and glass is everywhere, but aside from the above stuff and the overwhelming odor of smoke and my broken-down front door, there is no other (water or fire or smoke stain) damage to the apartment. This is in NYC, and I have no renter's insurance. [more inside]
Was interracial marriage ever illegal in New York State? What was the status of the law in 1961? [more inside]
I recently bought a corset for a friend of mine. She looks killer drop-dead amazing gorgeous in it. We'd like to go out to dinner somewhere in NYC where such attire would be both appreciated and fit in. (She'll probably pair it with pants—nothing fetish-y. I'll do my level best to look sharp, but I can hardly compete.) All suggestions appreciated. Thanks!
You get to spend a week in New York, Paris or Rome, during which money isn't much of an object. You're not a millionaire by any means, but for once you're going to have a romantic holiday where you're not cutting costs by backpacking or AirBNBing or packing your own lunch or commuting from the outer rim every morning. I'm considering leaving NY but I don't know if I'm being realistic at all. Currently unemployed and have limited funds. [more inside]
I've been to NY dozens of times and enjoy exploring neighborhoods like the Village and SoHo where there are lots of shops, coffeeshops, restaurants, etc. I prefer independent shops over the corporate stores you'd find in Midtown. I haven't spent a whole lot of time in NY in the last 10 years so I'm not aware of neighborhoods that may have changed. I'm visiting this weekend please help me decide where to spend my time! Due to a series of unfortunate events I'm now homeless and lost all my savings. Looking for overall advice how to rent a room in NYC and survive. [more inside]
My friend is looking to change careers and hopefully move into the nonprofit world. Is a career change possible at her age? What should she be doing? What types of positions should she be looking for? She's in her 50s and has a legal background. She can practice law and formerly worked in legal publishing, but she hasn't worked in law for decades. She's spent the last decade or so as an analyst at a financial company.
I'm a 30-year-old straight single guy, debating a move to either NYC or SF. Singledom has been getting tiresome (after 6+ months), and I'd be interested in knowing whether dating would be substantially better or easier in one or the other city. I'm a slightly nerdy (but by no-means super-geeky) and fairly athletic/outdoorsy highly-educated professional. In either city, I'd be living in or near the urban center. [more inside]
In a month or so, I will be buying a used car from a relative in a far away state to bring to New York state (not city). What do I need to do to be in compliance with the law, regarding insurance and registration? I already have a NY state license.
I’m looking for someone -- or some service -- to help me prepare my application to be admitted to the New York State Bar. (I’ve already passed the bar exam itself.) I don’t have blemishes, so-to-speak, that need to be explained, but my pre-law work history is complicated, and I lived in a million different places before law school but during the applicable period -- and I'm very busy right now -- so I'd like someone to help me carefully and precisely put the application together. Yay! Almost a year after taking the NYS Civil Service/Professional exam, I finally got my first canvass letter, from the NYS Insurance Fund, asking me about my interest in being considered for a Personnel Administration traineeship. Going by my previous questions, you might imagine that I'm VERY, VERY interested.. They want a resume before they'll even consider an interview. That's a problem. [more inside]
I want to ride from NYC to SF in 2015. I have 8 to 10 weeks (maybe 12) to do it. When would be the best time of the year to do so? [more inside]
Can't decide if I should move back to NYC from SF. Please help me find some new ways to think about the problem. [more inside]
I'm heading to Fort Drum, NY in October visit someone during a weekend (arrive Friday night, leave Sunday afternoon). Where should we fly into: Watertown or Syracuse? Where should we stay?: Near Ft. Drum, in Syracuse, or? There's some time to see things in the area; what should we do and see? [more inside]
We'll be staying in Watertown, NY Sept. 25-28. I'll be doing other research but I wanted to ask the Green for recommendations. So... any must sees, recommendations for tours, food, etc... [more inside]
I want to buy four or five interesting posters to fill up my blank walls in my new place and make it feel like 'mine'. I'd prefer to pick them out in person, rather than buying online. I'm especially interested in 20th century art (particularly abstract or semi-abstract), nature or urban photography, vintage maps and prints, and almost anything art deco or art nouveau. I'm also open to serendipitous discoveries that don't fit any of the above. Is there a place in New York that stocks a wide breadth of such things? [more inside]
So we rented the house and have a moving date and now we're looking for recommendations for movers that can get us from far Northern NY to Portland, Maine. I think we'll be better off with movers from Maine coming to get us as where we are currently movers are few and far between. Any recommendations for movers that provide such a service? Thanks!
I'll be in Manhattan from this weekend for a conference and some holiday time. I'm trying to keep up cycle training for a big event in two months. Are there routes around Manhattan where I can do some nice mileage while seeing some sights and feeling secure? Details within. [more inside]
I thought I saw a recent announcement for a panel including Israeli author Amos Oz in New York City (perhaps as panel moderator). Now I can't remember where I saw it and Google hasn't been any help. Anyone know of a recent appearance in NYC or an upcoming one?

What do I put on a car insurance quote form? I am moving (NJ/NY/CA), changing jobs, and going through at least 3 unique stages of driving frequency/behavior over the next few months. And it really feels like most of this isn't the insurance company's business. But clearly I need to put *something* in each field. :) Help? Here are my facts, what parts of this should be put into the form? Work 1) I've worked full time in NY for just over a year now 2) I am unemployed between now and the end of June and for most of August 3) I have a full time, residential job in NY during July 3) I'm interviewing for jobs in CA that will begin in late August/early September and have already gotten at least one offer. But I haven't made the choice yet and won't for at least another month. Location 1) I've lived in NJ for just over a year now 2) I'm buying a used car from a friend in NC (my home state) next week 3) But I'm moving to CA and the car will be parked in CA starting in July 4) I myself will be in NY for the duration of July 5) I will begin renting and driving in CA in August Driving Behavior 1) Between June 1st and June 30th, I'm doing quite a bit of inter-state driving, although not all at once. 2) I'm parking the car and not driving it at all in July 3) I'm using the car to commute in CA in August and beyond [more inside]
Hi, I recently was offered a job on 1st Ave near Grand Central in NYC. I live in Maplewood, NJ which makes for a rather long commute so my wife and I have discussing the possibility of CT or Upstate NY. We really like the culture of Maplewood. It's very diverse and accepting. A lot of families move from Brooklyn and it has a very artsy culture. I was wondering if anyone knows of towns in the NY or CT that have a similar feel?
My favorite place in the entire world is Philadelphia's exquisite and incomparable Mütter Museum, I've seen Body Worlds more than a dozen times... and you should probably refrain from clicking either of those links if you are squeamish. I will soon be spending a week in NYC followed by a week in Washington, DC. Can you help me make a list of similar museums, exhibits, and collections to visit while I'm there? [more inside]
Young professional couple, 30 y/o, being relocated from NY to work in Roseville, CA. Currently work in Manhattan and live right outside the city. We're hoping to live somewhere that is within close distance to bars, restaurants, shops, etc. but are not looking to live in the suburbs. Preliminary research has shown us neighborhoods either very suburby or college towns. We still are hoping for the california feel so are a little weary about living in downtown sacramento but are open to any suggestions. We want to avoid living in an apartment building full of college kids. We would like to be west of sacramento so in closer distance to san francisco/napa/weekend trip options.
I've been in Rochester, NY for two and a half years now for graduate study, and I have about that much longer to stay here. I haven't liked the city since I moved here (the weather is terrible, the city is small and geographically isolated, it feels like everything important is happening elsewhere, the natural beauty is underwhelming, etc. etc.). Recently I've come to believe that it isn't really the town's fault, but mine, since I never really gave Rochester a chance. How do you cultivate a love for a city that you didn't grow up in, never intended to come to, and plan to leave as soon as professionally possible? [more inside]
One of my coworkers said that the PATH will shut down if the snow accumulates past the height of the 3rd rail. But the line is underground (except outside where there are wires above head-height handling the charge) - could that actually happen. Has the PATH ever been shut down due to snow accumulation before?

Help! I live in Brooklyn and I need to have a pair of lace up boots like these or these on my feet by the end of the day. Where can I find some? Doesn't need to be this specific brand, just this type of lace-up boot that you see young women wearing everywhere. Even better if they're slightly beaten up. I'm willing to venture to Manhattan. Budget: must be less than 250.
I would like to find a seamstress or tailor to make a custom pencil skirt for me that I can wear to work (so, stuffy business fabric). My attempts to google a solution have not been successful. I either find places that want to charge me $300 or more (nope!), places that do alterations (I need it made from scratch), or places that make custom clothing for men but not women, or brides but not non-brides. I am located in lower Manhattan but have a subway card and am willing to use it. Can anyone suggest where I can go to have a nice suit-like pencil skirt created for me?
Seeking suggestions for good stores in NYC to buy high-quality kitchen knives where you can test them out before purchasing. Even if they don't let you actually cut or chop anything, are there places that at least let you hold the knives in your hand, to get a sense of the grip/feel/weight, etc.? Thanks!
I'm completely at a loss for what to buy my sister for her upcoming birthday. She's in her early 20s, lives in upstate NY, works on a farm, and likes anything farm/outdoors/sustainability/anthropology related. She's interested in anything, really, but doesn't like materialistic "bought at the mall" type stuff. So nothing mass-made. I need some special little something that she would find useful and not silly or frivolous. [more inside]

Need recommendation for a tailor on or near the UWS of Manhattan, NYC . Standard stuff, mostly altering off the rack shirts, pants, and jackets, nothing too extreme but should be familiar with vintage and custom-mades. Would prefer quality over speed or cost.

I'm going on a trip to New York in the middle of July, and I'd like to have a meal at one of the fancier restaurants in the city -- say, Eleven Madison Park or Jean Georges. I'm planning on visiting the East Coast this July -- the area roughly from Boston to Washington, DC. I don't really have a set plan yet, aside from visiting NYC for a couple of days (up to a week), hopefully visiting Boston for a few days, and hanging out along the Maryland/DC border for a conference. Travel tips/suggestions? [more inside]
