Transitioning from profit to not-for-profit at 40: what's negotiable?

After a decade in for-profit marketing in a secondary city, I'm being seriously considered for something close to a dream job in Toronto. The main issue is that there'd be a major salary drop -- from CAD$75,000 a year to sub-CAD$50,000, and I'd be moving from a place where the cost of living is low, and my house is mortgage-free and paid off, to, well, Toronto. My current location is not commutable to Toronto. What can I negotiate with my (hopeful) employer to help make up the difference? [more inside]

Reputable, informative sources regarding South Sudan

I'm looking for news sources, reports written by reputable NGOs, detailed maps, long-form magazine articles regarding newsworthy events and other general info on the current state of politics, economics, stability and other issues of geopolitical interest related to South Sudan. I would like to dedicate approximately one or two full working days to informing myself about the past 10-15 years of history and the current state of the country.

I want to work for an international NGO, but how?

I'm graduating from college this spring and I'm very interested in working with an international NGO. I know there are organizations monitoring elections, promoting democracy, installing networks and computers in villages, interviewing rebels and citizens… but how can I work for one? Ideally I'd like to travel a lot, or at least be based somewhere abroad (not the US). [more inside]

Organization focused on 3 plant species, all adept at filtering water

I can't remember the name of this organization, and I've seen online crowds do better. The website I remember was focused on 3 plants, and the organization's major goal was cleaning waterways by replanting in places where we have uprooted for the sake of a better view or access to the water etc. It's possible they've branched into more species, but at the time they seemed pretty dedicated solely to a tree, a bush, and another plant. Thanks, here's hoping.

Making the Most of a Full-time MPP Program

I recently accepted an offer for a spot in a full time MPP program from a very decent, non-Ivy school. My funding (per an assistantship or researcher position) reduces the total tuition to approximately $3000, and the program provides an allowance for an unpaid or poorly paid summer internship. I have enough money saved to avoid going into debt if I work part time. I want to offset the opportunity costs of two years outside of work by making myself as employable as possible. [more inside]

Is being ruthlessly overworked as an NGO employee par for the course?

I've been working in my current position for a little over a year now, and I love most things about it. But: I'm very overworked, exhausted, and I can feel burn-out creeping in. How much should I charge to MC a gala fundraising dinner?

I've been invited to emcee a gala dinner for a nonprofit. They are paying me for my talents, but I don't have anything other than random guesses about how much to charge, and their initial offer was basically "money is no object," which actually make it harder for me. Are there any resources out there that can help me narrow down a range to work from?

How to get an internship at the last minute

What reputable NGOs offer internships or volunteer positions for summer this late in the year? I am an undergrad in need of an internship abroad (preferably in an Arabic-speaking country) for summer 2010. Really, I'm open to any type of foreign adventure, as long as it involves international travel, has an end product (paper, article, professional experience, etc), and is not insanely dangerous (no traveling to war zones alone, though traveling to war zones with government or NGO support is totally cool). Why did I not apply earlier, you ask? [more inside]

I'm looking for an internship in New York with an NGO, and I speak Nepali.

I am a college student going to school in Manhattan, and I'm looking for an internship for this coming spring semester. I am a third year political science major with interests in technology, development, and journalism. At the moment I am studying and travelling abroad in India and Nepal, and I've gotten pretty much fluent in Nepali. Does anyone know of a cool New York based NGO that might have use for someone who knows Nepali language? General advice on finding NGOs in the New York area to intern for is also appreciated.
