I want to have a fast capable NAS/file server/upnp device very similar to the QNAP TS-110 TurboNAS. I have an old 12" Powerbook G4 aluminum MAC OS x laptop. Would it be possible to install a barebones linux installation on the Powerbook to have access to many of the same features of the QNAP device? [more inside]

Are there any better tools for transferring about a terabyte of files over a local network than just dragging and dropping in Windows? Specifically, is there a tool that can pick up and double-check files once they've been copied over? [more inside]

I am trying to set up my router so that I can get at my files on my 3 NAS boxes. These NAS boxes are 1) D-Link DNS323, Infrant ReadyNAS NV+, and a Buffalo TeraStation HD-H2.0TGL/R5. The router is connected to the internet via a home service cable modem so it won't have a static IP and one step is to find the IP address before accessing. I have a router (DLink DGL-4100) which says it can make a IPSec VPN or FTP using a Virtual Server (I think). There would be no other PCs on the network since I would be taking my laptop with me when I access the network. The manuals for the routers talk about FTP serving but if I get a VPN set in my router then I should be able to just browse for whatever I want that way...right? The instructions say it can be done, but how? Please give me step by step instructions the best you can for setting up the router, the NAS boxes and my XP laptop (with suggested software, if necessary) since I have looked all over the internet and can't find anything I can understand. Of course the access should be encrypted and password protected. THANKS GUYS. [more inside]

I'm looking for inspiration on how to reduce computer clutter. I run a lot of machines and make them do a lot of cool things, but in a 92sqm apartment where we're also trying to manage massive DVD, magazine, and book libraries, and where my previous work station (which was never all that orderly) has been conquered by my girlfriend's rampaging makeup and sewing stuff, it ain't easy. I want to compartmentalize, organize, and speed up the process of accessing my stuff. Ideas? [more inside]

Looking for a cheap NAS enclosure (~$50) - interested in ximeta netdisk, but I'd rather go with something that doesn't require a software install. For $100ish I could build a cheap VIA C3/C7 server, but a simple HD enclosure would be better. I'm planning to run it off a WRT54g, and have heard that ximeta's get slow wifi performance - could I watch videos over the connection (300mb/hr divx), or would I be restricted to backup and music? If so, what's the cheapest NAS enclosure that isn't a POS that can manage mp3's over wifi? Something that could do bittorrent would be great, but they seem much more costly. Most important, I want a NAS that will spin down when not in use so it doesn't kill my non-enterprise HD.

I have a small network of 3 computers at home which connect wireless to a router. Plugged into this router is a Netgear sc101 NAS type device. What I’m looking for is another device that will back up the contents of the sc101 so it can be taken off site. I don’t want to have to do a full backup each time just backup files that have changed or are new is this possible? if so could someone recommend a solution ?

Can anyone suggest an inexpensive NAS solution for a Mac that could plug into my linksys wifi router? I already own a USB 300gig hard drive that I would like to use. I won't get an airport express as I already have a wifi router. The solutions I've seen used the linux file system. I'd like something that I can use to backup my MacBook over the wifi at night using Time Machine, the new backup solution in Leopard. Thanks.
